Come
and See is an invitation
for each of us to
experience Jesus as He
enters Jerusalem; to
witness His betrayal by a
friend; to endure with
Him the suffering and
death of a sinless
Savior; and finally to
behold His empty tomb.
Through the eyes of a
blind beggar, we're taken
through these events and
more by way of a powerful
and moving dramatic
script, and energetic
choral arrangements
carefully designed for
smaller choirs by
two-time Dove Award
winning writers, Dennis
and Nan Allen. With a run
time of 36 minutes, this
dramatic musical includes
popular worship songs
Come and See and Sing to
the King and the classic
Wayne Watson song Friend
of a Wounded Heart. Also
included is a beautiful
arrangement of the hymn I
Saw the Cross and a new
tune to the great hymn
text Beneath the Cross of
Jesus. Musically, this
work is highlighted by
settings that any choir
can comfortably attain.
Several opportunities for
congregational
involvement are included.
For the full drama
version, a small cast is
required, and Nan Allen
has written creative and
very useful production
notes to assist in both
staging and costuming.
The narrator version
requires two narrators
and is equally moving.
This Easter, come and see
what Jesus did for
you.

composer of church and
keyboard music, Tomkins
wrote secular vocal music
that offers a compendium
of all the various
styles: canzonets,
balletts, madrigals and
'sacred songs'. Each was
dedicated to one of his
relatives, a friend or a
colleague. The names of
these 28 dedicatees form
a fascinating list at the
end of the
book.

The cantata Himmelskonig,
sei willkommen BWV 182
holds a special place in
Johann Sebastian Bach's
biography. He had been
employed as organist and
chamber musician at the
court of Weimar since
1708; on 2 March 1714, he
was appointed concert
master of the court, and
his inauguration music
for this occasion was
Himmelskonig, sei
willkommen. The cantata
was first performed on
Palm Sunday of that year,
25 March 1714. Bach
performed this cantata
several times - always
revising and amending it
- both in Weimar and in
Leipzig. Of the
altogether four versions,
the first Leipzig version
has been selected for the
present new edition.
Unlike the Weimar
versions, it can be
realized effectively
using modern performance
means. In his debut
composition of 1714, the
newly appointed concert
master demonstrated his
abilities: the eight
movements contain a
multitude of beautiful
and rewarding challenges
for choir and vocal
soloists alike, and in
addition there is the
unusual attraction of a
virtuoso solo part for
the recorder. Score and
parts available
separately - see item

Schram.
Ruth Elaine
Schram has a special gift
for writing memorable
melodies. This piece is
no exception as she
tenderly cradles a
picturesque text with
exquisite tuneful beauty.
The contrasting middle
section is a challenge
for all to hurry and
behold the Savior:
“Run, run, run to
Bethlehem! See this thing
which has come to
pass...†Then the
quietness of the manger
returns with a quote from
the familiar carol:
“O come, let us
adore Him.†The
optional flute part adds
a lovely shimmer to this
beautiful nocturne.
“Shepherd's
Carol†is a must
for your Christmas
programming.

To
Nocturner (2001) - for
Chamber Choir (12 or 24
Voices). Texts by Ole
Sarvig and Ib Michael.
English version
available: KP01444E
Programme note: These two
choral pieces for 12
voices consists of
radical recompositions on
of earlier themes: in
Summer's Sleep we hear
new combinations of two
'Sarvig melodies' from
the 1970s (one of which
is now in the Danish
Hymnbook under the title
aret, The Year):
Michael's Night is based
on an earlier, simple
choral song (Star
Mirror,1987), now for 12
voices and composed such
that an original idea of
simultaneously displaced,
opposite motions cf. the
poem) comes out as
desired. Of the Nocturnes
Norgard writes: Summer's
Sleep wascomposed to
stanzas of Ole Sarvig's
poem The Year (from the
collection Forstadsdigte
('Suburban Poems')) and
forms the picture of the
summer of life, which is
asleep - while the heaven
seed waits for the summer
wind (invisible to every
mind). The many layers of
text are expressed
musically in a
multilayered choral
texture with 'looks' up
and down through the
various tempo and
time-worlds: summer
sleep, summer dream. The
second nocturne,
Michael's Night, takes
its name from the author
Ib Michael, whose poem
Star Mirror (from the
collection
Himmelbegravelse ('Sky
Funeral') (1986) I
pushed/coaxed him to
expand from one to nine
stanzas. The four
selected stanzas set in
the nocturne focus on the
pan-erotic elements of
the moonlit, starlit
night. With the titles I
have chosen I have
stressed the mythic layer
of the text, the summer
night not as a dream but
as sensual reality. The
two nocturnes are
dedicated to Ivan Hansen
on the occasion of his
fiftieth birthday on 25th
February 2003, out of
gratitude for over a
quarter of a century of
inspiring
collaboration.
