This
piece uses the organ to
replicate the tonal
timbre of the khaen (or
khene), a Thai mouth
organ played like the
harmonica and possessing
a strong, reedy tonal
quality similar to the
Chinese sheng. Enrich the
sound of your choir with
the aural landscape of
Thailand, blessing
God’s name through
songs of praise from the
beauty of Asian
culture.

Pacific
Dreams describes the
experience of Miguel, a
traveling composer from
Spain who, feeling
somewhat alienated from
his homeland, is
wandering through an area
of Sydney known as The
Rocks. At a small outdoor
market in a typical
street of this
oldcolonial
neighbourhood, he
discovers a print of
William DeShazos painting
Pacific Dreams Portrayed
in the painting is the
surf of one of the exotic
islands in the Pacific.
Next, with the impressive
Sydney Harbour Bridge
looming over the
narrowstreets of The
Rocks, he envisions
sultry Pacific beaches.
Suddenly a theme he once
composed about the lakes
in Japan comes to him. Is
it the Asian influences
present in cosmopolitan
Sydney that bring this
theme to mind? Or perhaps
the waters aroundSydney,
over which he could sail
to Tahiti? He is
uncertain. Could this
same theme be used to
create a new composition
about his feelings for
the metropolis Sydney?
How then to work his
Pacific Dreams into the
mix? Miguel is certainly
no fan ofHawaiian music.
Mayby he could use the
vocabularies of islands
like Hawaii and Tahiti,
their beautiful vowel
combinations being sung
ad libitum by a mixed
choir.With these ideas
and his newly purchased
print of Pacific Dreams,
he boards the Metroat
Circular Quay. He has a
final glimpse of the
harbour and the Sydney
Opera House as the train
races into the ground. On
to the hotel! To work! He
must compose!Maestoso :
Miguel is impressed as he
gazes upon the Sydney
Harbour Bridge. And yet,
hewants to go away from
this city. Away, to an
exotic island in the
Pacific.Steady Rock : In
the Rocks, musicians are
playing at a square.
Miguel basks in the
atmosphere but at the
same time he is
fantasizing about Hawaii
and Tahiti.Andante
Lamentoso :In his hotel
room, Miguel is feeling
sad and lonely in this
big city. He takes
comfort in his Pacific
Dreams.Allegro : Miguel
boards the boat that
takes him from Darling
Harbour to Circular Quay.
In his mind he is
traveling on to Hawaii.
Or is ithome, where the
bolero is playing? He is
pulled back to reality by
the skyline of
Sydney.
Wir
schlüpfen in die Haut
von Miguel und reisen mit
ihm nach Australien.
Einigermaßen
entfremdet von seiner
spanischen Heimat
schlendert er durch das
Viertel The Rocks in
Sydney. Auf einem kleinen
Markt entdeckt er einen
Druck des Gemäldes
Pacific Dreams von
William DeShazo. Das Bild
stellt die Meeresbrandung
auf einer exotischen
Insel im Pazifik dar.
Während die
eindrucksvolle Harbour
Bridge von Sidney vor ihm
auftaucht, ist er in
Gedanken bei den
heißen Stränden im
Stillen Ozean. Auf einmal
kommt ihm das Thema in
den Sinn, das er einst
über die Gewässer
Japans komponiert hatte.
Liegt es an den
asiatischen
Einflüssen, die im
kosmopolitischen Sydney
so vielfältig
vertretensind? Oder sind
es die Wasser rund um
Sydney, über die er
nach Tahiti segeln
könnte? Er ist sich
unsicher. Könnte er
genau dieses Thema für
eine neue Komposition
über die Metropole
Sydney verwenden? Wie
sollte er seine Träume
vom Pazifik, seine
Pacific Dreams, in
diese Mixtur einbringen?
Vielleicht könnte er
den Wortschatz von Inseln
wie Hawaii und Tahiti
für seine Komposition
verwenden. Und einen
gemischten Chor die
schönen
Vokalverbindungen ad
libitum singen lassen.
Mit diesen Ideen im Kopf
steigt er in die Metro am
Circular Quay. Auf ins
Hotel und frisch ans
Werk! Jetzt muss er
einfach
komponieren....

Millay’s descriptions
of nature, and of
feelings and emotions,
have always spoken to me.
SECOND APRIL consists of
four of her poems, each
with a distinctive mood,
message, and emotional
feel. They are vivid,
powerful, and beautiful,
inspiring me to capture
these descriptions of the
various scenes she

Second April uses music
to underlie strong
feelings, passions, and
the tragedies of life.
The poem itself is
dramatic, detailing a
time of personal strife
and tragedy, perhaps the
end of a relationship or
even the end of a life.
The music is intense,
fast, in a minor key, and
with rapid, spinning
notes creating a feeling
of powerful, relentless
emotions. Melodies,
motives, and gestures are
tossed between the
voices, increasing the
feelings of intensity and
even desperation. Little
by little, the music
almost dies away, getting
quieter and quieter,
creating a feeling of
resignation, but with a
Picardy Third in the
final chord – maybe a
bit of hope! Mariposa
is a celebration of
nature, wandering through
a field with white and
blue butterflies
appearing almost
wondrously. But there’s
also a profound feeling
of poignancy, noting that
as one relishes such a
beautiful, magical sight,
they should embrace the
experience – the
fleeting, transient
nature of such a perfect
vision and of life
itself. The music
portrays the flying of
the butterflies: gentle,
beautiful, with rich
chords and arpeggios, but
stepping back, as the
fleeting nature of life
is the reality, with
gentle, but sombre chords
interspersed with the
magical flight of the
Mariposa.Alms is a fast
rondo, intense, bold, and
always dance-like. It is
about both tragedy and
resilience. This music is
also in minor, yet with
moments of playfulness,
as a recollection of
happy times or moments
takes over. This seesaw
between emotions is heard
throughout the movement,
as the music continues to
“dance.” And with
Millay’s summing up of
“reality being what it
is,” the piece ends
with strength, boldness,
and finality. Into the
Golden Vessel of Great
Song is an appassionato
call to overcome! The
poem exhorts us to
“sing out” with hope,
determination, and
strength. The music is
full of bright and
lilting energy; but as
the turmoil and times of
strife people can
sometimes feel or
experience, the music
becomes intense,
dramatic, in a minor key,
and with changing
rhythms. BUT, there is a
return to championing the
idea of simply
overcoming, going forward
with hope and
determination, and the
music is in major,
resonant and strong.

The
modern a cappella series
offers new, challenging a
cappella music with a
jazzpop sound. The
editions are orientated
towards the needs of the
developing jazz-pop
choral scene. a special
choral sound, groove,
improvisation and
choreography play central
roles - individual
singers can come to the
fore as soloists. In
short, modern a cappella
is a new category of
choral music; there are
no covered pop songs and
also no serious new
music, rather grooving,
contemporary vocal music
with unconventional texts
and choral presence. The
series is geared towards
highly motivated youth
choirs as well as
ambitious ensembles from
all genres.

Four Madrigals From The
Natural World for 6-12
part mixed chorus. This
piece incorporates texts
by Les Murray. ' FOUR
MADRIGALS to texts by the
Australian poet Les
Murray are composed of
two songs (Bats'
Ultrasound and The Octave
of Elephants) written for
the Australian vocal
group THE SONG COMPANY,
and two songs (Cattle
Egret and Comete) from my
larger work SOUND /
SIGHT, written for the
Danish Radio Chamber
Choir, but here arranged
for six voices. The texts
are pictures and
situations from - or
meditations over - THE
NATURAL WORLD. Les
Murray's way of
approaching this world is
not in the least
sentimentalor nostalgic:
the poems reveal a
truebeing-out-there
realism: so basically the
approach is realistic,
but the creating of form
elevates the material to
an abstractplay, a daring
and exuberant poetic
language. These poems
asked to be set to music.
I gave up old
idiosyncrasies regarding
descriptive music, and
surrendered to the
madrigal, with its
special so-called
madrigalisms, which
entails also
animal-imitations. You
will hear this
particulary inThe Octave
of Elephants. ' - Pelle

Emily
Dickinson's two poems
entitled Ending and
Dawn provide the ideal
backdrop for an
experience that begins in
darkness and ends in a
burst of light and
mystery. Meredith
Tompkins' interpretation
of the two texts centers
on the multi-faceted
meanings of each poem,
exploring themes of lost
youth, leaving home,
mortality, destiny and
hope. Audiences and
choirs alike will
experience Dickinson's
poignant words through
haunting melodies, vivid
text-painting, dynamic
contrast, minimalist
soundscapes and melodic
layering that gradually
builds to intense and
thought-provoking
conclusions.Ending:That

—Be it but a

garrets,Or a holiday,Or a

later,Parting with a

will comeI open every
door;Or has it feathers
like a bird,Or billows
like a shore?

Text by Charles Anthony
Silvestri.
The text
for Dreamweaver is based
on parts of the
well-known Norwegian
medieval folk poem
Draumkvedet, an epic
ballad that has a lot in
common with
Dante’s The Divine
Comedy. The protagonist,
Olav Ã…steson, falls
asleep on Christmas Eve
and sleeps for thirteen
days. He wakes up and
rides to church to
describe his dreams to
the congregation about
his brave, beautiful,
terrifying, and
ultimately redeeming
journey through the
afterlife. For this
composition, the
Draumkvedet poem has been
adapted into a playful
interpretation in English
penned by Charles Anthony
Silvestri.

It was during a
short, weekend vacation
cruise to Ensenada. B.C.
(from Los Angeles) with
the St. Cyril Choir that
the idea for an Amazing
Grace Mass came about.
The more I thought about
it, the more I liked the
idea of writing for
chorus and bagpipes.
The early draft
used two bagpipes, but
when we had a piper come
to a rehearsal so that we
could see how it would
work, it became readily
apparent that one piper
would be more than
enough. It was, in fact,
just right. The final
form of the piece was
achieved by a process of
progressive
simplification, i.e., the
bagpipe part had to be
simplified in order for
it to be coherent and not
just noise. The chorus,
needed simplification in
order to compete with the
sheer volume of the
bagpipe during
performance. Thus, the
piper basically plays the
tune Amazing Grace
throughout each movement
of the Mass, while the
chorus sometimes sings
the same tune, and
sometimes sings
uncomplicated lines
against the piper
melody.
The text
is the full Proper of the
Roman Catholic Mass in
Latin.
