From the
mysterious to the
glorious, Biery perfectly
captures the wide-ranging
moods of this text, set
to the enduring tune
EBENEZER. This hymn
concertato was written
for the Schola Cantorum
of Concordia Theological
Seminary, Fort Wayne,
Indiana in observance of
the 500th anniversary of
the Reformation. So, it's
no surprise that the
setting has considerable
sweep and gravitas, with
some fresh harmonic
twists. A beautiful
choir-only section spans
stanzas three and four in
major tonalities that
nicely complement the
staid minor of the rest
of the hymn. The sixth
and final stanza is
unison with descant and
concludes with a choir
Alleluia and Amen.
Stirring and majestic.
Duration 4:00.

Rich
ard Bullen's 'dark
lullaby' The
Oxen was
commissioned by Choir
& Organ magazine
for the choir of St
Paul's Cathedral, and it
was featured in the
September 2016 issue as
part of the New Music
series showcasing choral
works by young composers.
Although lilting rhythms
evoke a mood of naivety
and innocence, of
children gathered in
hushed excitement around
the fireside on Christmas
Eve as pictured in the
first verse of Hardy's
well-known poem, there is
also an edge to the music
that reflects its
nostalgic, even bitter
content. First published
in The Times on
24 December 1915, this
seasonal lyric can also
be read as a lament for
loss of innocence and of
the simple urge to faith.
We might also find in its
reflection on the
distance between the
ideals of civilisation
and its reality, a tragic
separation that continues
to this day. Part of the
subtle resonance of the
poem is its
conversational manner.
Each voice should
therefore be phrased
flexibly and feelingly in
its contribution to the
discourse, while the
tempi should be
judiciously chosen to
enhance this overall
effect according to the
prevailing acoustic.

Among his
compositions, Franz
Lachner, the long-serving
Music Director of the
Court of Munich and
Director of the Royal
Choir, left behind a
considerable number of
sacred works, including
two settings of the
Stabat Mater. The first
Stabat Mater, op. 154,
from 1856 was strictly
for a vocal ensemble; the
second, op. 168, from
1870 (see p. 5) included
strings and organ, in
which the darker timbre
was achieved through the
absence of the violins.
In its harmonic
expression the second
composition is especially
oriented towards the, at
that time, modern style
of the North German
School centred around
Liszt and Wagner, but
without ever exceeding a
moderate degree of
technical difficulty in
the voice parts. Score
available separately -
see item CA.7003700.

Magnificat
is a tribute to the
unaccompanied motets of
favourite composers from
several eras - in
particular those of
Dufay, the Eton
Choirbook, Robert Carver,
Lassus and Bach. The work
is therefore full of
contrast in texture,
harmony, mood and pacing,
and exploits the
resources of
unaccompanied chorus in a
manner not only analogous
to those already
mentioned but also to
ensemble or orchestral
writing. Naturally -
given the sentiments of
the text - the mood is
predominantly joyful and
exuberant; but the darker
implications of certain
phrases in the text are
not ignored. Towards the
end there is a big choral
explosion on one of the
traditional plainsong
chants for the
Magnificat, before the
work subsides into a coda
of calm serenity.
Magnificat was
commissioned by the ORA
choir. It is dedicated to
the French composer Betsy
Jolas, in celebration of
her 90th birthday, and in
equal celebration of our
mutual love of many
choral composers
mentioned above.
