This little piece was commissioned by King's College, Cambridge in 2002 as the then-latest in their celebrated annual Christmastide service of Nine Lessons and Carols for their unique Chapel - it is dedicated to the choir and its director Stephen Cleobury. 'Little', but already a mini-cantata telling the start of the familiar story - Gabriel's Annunciation - praise to the Virgin before she too sings 'my soul doth magnify the Lord': the shepherds a-watching their flocks by night - the angelic chorus in the sky - the fusion of celestial and earthy around the crib holding the baby who is also 'lord of Time and Space'. Here we stop, for now. In fact this is only the first panel of a Christmas Sequence that continues and concludes the whole tale. Seeking out unhackneyed texts, I found such attractive material in the byways that I couldn't resist weaving together from it a composite tapestry, then setting the lot! The words of this section are from the Gospel account, anonymous carols of the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, Edmund Bolton (1611, 'Sweet music, sweeter far...'), the Gloria from the Mass, a couple of lines from well-loved Anglican Christmas hymns - with neutral link-lines of my own. Love's As Warm As Tears was expertly composed by Paul Mealor. The piece was commissioned by the Dean and Chapter of Westminster and first performed on the 22nd November 2013, at a service dedicated to C. S Lewis, by the Special Service Choir of Westminster Abbey, conducted by James O'Donnell.Paul Mealor is a Welsh composer, recognised for his contribution to choral music. Before me, careless lying is a fine example of the contrapuntal art of Herbert Howells (1892–1983), inspired by the work of the great English composers of the Renaissance period, those of the madrigal school in particular, but in its passionate sensibility essentially twentieth century. The composer wrote this partsong on Christmas Day 1918, and dedicated it to his friend the organist Dr R. R. Terry, Director of Music at Westminster Cathedral, and chairman of the Tudor Church Music committee. The words are by the poet and biographer Austin Dobson, whose Collected Poems was published in 1897. Perhaps as a token of the composer’s regard for Terry’s pioneering work infurthering the appreciation and understanding of sixteenth-century church music, Before me, careless lying was originally published with the alto and tenor parts notated in traditional clefs. It is here reissued with clefs in modern forms of treble and transposed treble respectively, and with a keyboard transcription of the vocal parts which is intended for use in rehearsal./ Feuillet / SATB

'Ingenting utanför / Nothing Beyond? is another collaboration between Mårten Jansson and the Swedish poet Einar Askestad. This a cappella choral work deals with sorrow and loss. After a forceful, harmonically ambiguous section and a clear break in the music, the piece ends with a comforting decrescendo of reconciliation. It was commissioned by the Uppsala female choir 'La Cappella? and is dedicated to its choral director Tony Margeta.'My music is my own and I have never tried to be original. That has always been my motto and I have only tried to use music to express all the feelings which life has to offer. This has led people to describe my music as 'so sad that it sounds like birds who have lost their wings' but also as 'the happiest classical music that we have ever heard'.My compositions are almost all sacred.
