Par HINDEMITH PAUL. These canons now published for the first time document Hindemith's fondness of composing little parodistic works with a wink on certain occasions. More than 30 artistic postcard-sized works were written by the composer. In strict counterpoint, he used them to convey season's greetings, congratulations on birthdays and anniversaries, and thanks to friends, colleagues and cultural institutions. Some of these witty and entertaining pieces have been released on recordings several times, but they have not been available in printed editions yet. Messa d'morti. Par DURANTE FRANCESCO. The Requiem in C minor by Francesco Durante (1684–1755) is one of the most important works of this genre written in the first half of the 18th century. In his Messa de’ morti, Durante shows great creativity in combining traditional elements of church music with new ideas originating from instrumental writing and opera. The quality and originality of his Requiem make it an exciting rediscovery with the potential to establish itself as a core repertoire work of sacred choral music. Mainly known today as the teacher of Pergolesi and Paisiello, Durante spent much of his life working as music director at various conservatories in Naples and enjoyed great renown as achurch composer well into the 19th century. Despite its widespread popularity, indicated by the number of manuscript copies to be found across Europe, his Requiem never appeared in print. Par SAINT-SAENS CAMILLE. Psalm 137 'Super flumina Babylonis' also known as 'By the rivers of Babylon' was an inspiration for many composers including Camille Saint-Saëns. He repeatedly occupied himself with his psalm motet for solo soprano, mixed choir, saxophone quartet, string orchestra and organ, originally composed in 1854. Two of the four versions ? the first version in Latin and a much later version in English for alto solo, SATB choir and piano ? are now available for the first time in Urtext performing editions taking a meticulous account of all the sources. Saint-Saëns lived up to his reputation as an innovative composer by exploring the use of the saxophone family in sacred music just a few years after the invention of these instruments. Oratorio in three acts. Par HAENDEL GEORG FRIEDRICH. Handel composed Samson directly after completing the 'Messiah'. After its premiere in 1743 in the Covent Garden Theatre in London, the work rapidly became one of the composer's most successful oratorios alongside 'Esther' and 'Judas Maccabaeus'. This probably had as much to do with the popular Old Testament story of the libretto as with Handel's masterly shaping of the arias and choruses. By including some movements in the appendix, this edition makes it possible for the first time to perform the work in its original 1741 version. Since the two verifiable autographs of the offertory Misericordias Domini have been lost, for the present new critical edition Robert Münster was able to rely for the first time on the manuscript parts from the music of the Court of Munich which he discovered. Handel Coronation Anthems in Urtext editions for the first time'Zadok the Priest?(BA 10258) and 'The King shall rejoice?(BA 10259) are the best-known of the four coronation anthems that Handel wrote for the crowning of George II in London (1727). All this time was commissioned by Harrow School, for their 2012 Carol Service. There are two chapel choirs at Harrow - one of four parts, and the other, consisting of tenor and baritone voices, of two parts. For the Carol Service the two part choir sings from the Gallery, which also houses the organ, while the four part choir sings from the choir stalls at the east end of the Chapel. This carol is therefore written with these rather unusual arrangements in mind. In particular, the organ part makes a commentary on the text, as well as supporting the choirs. The tessitura of all parts is governed by the youthfulness of the voices of the School Choirs. Geistliches Repertoire. Par . With his Hebrew Choral Songbook, Ohad Stolarz presents a new collection of classics of the musical repertoire in Hebrew, arranged by him for mixed choir a cappella. Many of these pieces are published in Germany for the first time; almost all of them are first published as choral arrangements. The first volume contains ten sacred and paraliturgical songs that may be sung at various occasions. Among these are the feast of Passover, the “Ten Days of Repentance” in the month of Tishré and the Sabbath. The second volume contains ten secular songs that have become widely known in Israel during the 20th century. These songs are part of Israel’s cultural history and belong to its core repertoire. All Hebrew lyrics appear in transliteration underneath the music, translations in German and English and comprehensive annotation texts are located in the appendix. The cantata ' Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis ” dates from around 1713 and was probably performed for the first time that year in the Liebfrauenkirche in Halle . With its large-scale structure and strong emphasis on biblical texts, it was extremely popular in the 19th century and remains one of Bach's best-known cantatas today. Fassung Ii. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. The St. John Passion ranks alongside the St. Matthew Passion, the Christmas Oratorio, the Magnificat and the B minor Mass as one of the great vocal works from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Leipzig years. In contrast to his other large-scale choral works, however, Bach never gave this work a definitive final form. Rather, for every performance he substantially revised the general concept of the piece and also changed numerous details. All previous editions of the St. John Passion have combined readings from various layers of sources and thus present the work in a form which was never heard during Bach’s lifetime. Consequently, the wish often expressed by conductors to perform anauthentic version by Bach could not be easily achieved. The present critical, new edition of the St. John Passion fulfills this wish and for the first time makes available the complete music of the second version of the work as it was performed under Bach’s direction in 1725. Since a number of movements were replaced by others, including the opening chorus, this version differs most dramatically from the “standard” version which is well known today. J. S.
