The
Dettinger Te Deum was
written to celebrate
England's victory over
the French at the Battle
of Dettingen. It is
Handel's last and most
successful setting of the
Te Deum and reveals a
deep understanding of the
English church music
tradition. The sound
impact of this broadly
conceived work is
governed by the choirs in
an almost theatrical
exegesis of the text.
Particularly striking are
several borrowings from
the Messiah which Handel
had just
completed. This
edition, edited by
Baroque specialist Amanda
Babington, is based on
the Urtext from the Halle
Handel
Edition.

As
one of the three
canticles from the New
Testament, the Magnificat
- the Canticle of Mary -
has at all times held a
prominent position in
church music. Telemann's
setting of Luther's
German translation of the
text bears eloquent
witness both to the
composer's rich
imagination and to his
ability to mold a variety
of musical shapes into a
coherent formal Baroque
architecture. Four solo
movements with colorfully
contrasting
instrumentation are
juxtaposed with four
emphatically homogeneous
choral movements; all of
the latter are in 6/8
meter and in motet
setting with instruments
doubling colla parte.
Particularly the choral
movements are
characterized by lively
text portrayal and a
wealth of at times
dramatic imagery. A work
of exceptional magnetism
for both listeners and
choir singers! Score and

“A
lmiraâ€,
Handel’s first
opera, was well received
when premiered in 1705 at
the Theater am
Gänsemarkt in Hamburg.
The director was Reinhard
Keiser, who, remarkably,
had himself already set
Friedrich Christian
Feustking’s text
to music. The role of
Fernando was sung by
Johann Mattheson. The
translation used by
Handel leaves several
Italian arias in their
original language,
resulting in a delightful
mixture of German and
Italian.
The opera
which, after sundry
entangled romances, ends
in the wedding of three
couples, is characterised
by exuberant scenes: the
procession at
Almira’s crowning
ceremony, a duel, a
prison scene and a
masked-ball involving the
three continents Europe,
Africa and Asia.
The vocal score
to “Almiraâ€
by George Frideric Handel
brings about a small
sensation: Whilst
conducting a reenactment
of this work in 1732,
Georg Philipp Telemann
removed the Aria no. 28
“Ingrato,
spietato†from his
conducting score. Since
then this aria has been
deemed lost. Due to
necessity only the edited
vocal text devoid of any
music was presented in
the 1994 volume of the
“Halle Handel
Editionâ€.
Thanks to a recently
discovered contemporary
manuscript copy from the
beginning of the 18th
century which was found
in the music library of
the Mariengymnasium in
Jever, this aria has now
been made available to
performers for the first
time in this new vocal
score edition. Previous
to this the corresponding
pages could only be seen
as a facsimile in an
article of the
“Göttinger
Händel-Beiträgeâ
. Now the aria can
be performed again.
Furthermore, with the
help of this new source,
missing measures in the
basso continuo which had
initially been completed
by the editor of the
“Halle Handel
Edition†volume,
could be reconstructed
from the basso continuo
part of the Bellante aria
“Ich brenne
zwar†(no. 71).

In 1734
Handel provided the
pasticcio “ Oreste
†for his third
operatic enterprise
which, following the
bankruptcy of the Royal
Academy and its successor
academy, felt threatened
by competition from the
newly-founded Opera of
the Nobility. Hence, the
composer did not compile
the work from favourite
movements from his own
and other composer's
pieces as was usual at
that time; rather in
“ Oreste †he
presented a selection of
the most beautiful arias
and ensembles exclusively
from his own operas. In
addition, he expanded the
ballet and choral scenes
which he thought would
make a great impact after
the move into the newly
built Covent Garden
Theatre. As most of
the singers in his
Italian company had been
enticed away by the
competition, Handel
increasingly began to
engage English virtuosi.
He probably even worked
on the new version of the
libretto himself in order
to place the new stars in
the limelight to the best
effect.
The new
vocal score is based on

If you
enjoy singing Baroque
music and value the
importance of kindness,
courage and compassion,
this new 30 minute
through-composed work by
Mark Hayes for chorus,
soprano and tenor
soloists and orchestra is
for you. Drawing from the
writings of ancient and
contemporary authors, the
original text of
âKindness,â
written by Hayes, seeks
to answer the question,
âHow then shall we
live, especially in a
world that seems so
dysfunctional?â The
answer: live with
kindness, courage and
compassion. When we are
joined as one in our
pursuit of these values,
we can make a lasting
impact. To quote Margaret
Mead, âNever
underestimate the ability
of a small group of
committed individuals to
change the world.â
âKindnessâ is
set in the Baroque
tradition and features an
original chorale tune
with three separate
texts, a fugue, both
conventional and
retrograde,
recitative-like sections
for the soprano and tenor
soloists and extensive
instrumental interludes.
As a nod to Baroque
masters such as Johann
Sebastian Bach and George
Frideric Handel, Hayes
included passages
imitating âJesu, Joy
of Man's Desiringâ
and âHallelujah
Chorus.â This work
is perfect for high
school and college choirs
as well as community and
church choirs. The text
is intentionally not
sacred, rather universal
in its appeal. Imagine
how the music and message
of this work could join a
community together in the
pursuit of kindness,
courage and compassion.
It's what the world
needs.. now.

Among
Campra's Latin works, the
,Messe de mort' is
perhaps one of the more
successful and today it
is one of the more
frequently performed. It
is also the most
enigmatic score of his
entire output. Despite
extensive researches, no
evidence of any sort has
yet been brought to light
to document its origin,
purpose, date of
composition, first
performance or reception.
A stylistic analysis
indubitably supports the
contention that the
,Messe de mort' is a late
work, composed perhaps
between 1722 and 1729.
The present edition
is based on the
manuscript from the
Bibliotheque Nationale de
France (Paris). It it the
oldest known source of
the work. The very few
errors have been

Nac
h der Urauffuhrung war
die Esslinger Zeitung
hellauf begeistert:
Smolka ist ein Meister
der Stimmbehandlung und
der chorischen
Klanggestaltung. Im
Zentrum des Stucks gerat
die Musik zum Stillstand:
im leisen gleichmassigen

Das alles war sehr
beruhrend. Und eigentlich
noch mehr als das. My
father PhDr. Jaroslav
Smolka (1933-2011) was a
leading Czech
musicologist author of
books Czech Cantata and
Oratorium Fuga in Czech
Music Smetana's Orchestra

others. He was a
legendary teacher of
Music History at Prague
Music Academy critic
recording producer
composer; for almost 50
years he was an important
and highly respected
personality of Prague
musical life. My
father devoted a lot of
time and energy to
musical education and
activities of my sister
and me using often quite
original methods such as
teaching of intervals and
counterpoint through
Bartok's Microcosmos ear
training filling all
imaginable moments of
everyday life or lessons
of harmony analysis
starting with Overture to
Tristan and Musorgsky's
Catacombs. The Martinu
song Wondering Maiden was
his solo number in our
home vocal productions
which he used to sing
with amazing devotion
while his huge voice was
audible in several
neighboring
streets. My Agnus Dei
is closely bound to all
this history e.g. by
using canon and
preferring beauty of
dissonant seconds like
Bartok or quoting Martinu
and his refined
neoclassical harmony.
Father would be probably
a bit critical about the
minimalistic monotony of
the main body of the
piece. Nevertheless
firstly he would
improvise a short lecture
of history of Agnus Dei
in Requiem in Czech Music
naming by heart many
dates and all examples of
changes of order of the
traditional text by
composers. Examples would
be sung
probably. (Martin
Smolka).

mixed choir, some of
which include piano
accompaniments. The
repertoire ranges from

include pieces in

compositions by composers

about Was ist die
Welt?A strict Allegro
ben ritmato symbolises
how inexorable the course
of the world is. The
choir chants the question
about what Welt (the
world) actually is.
Hectic bustle is
expressed through a
pulsing basic motif. This
is repeated constantly
and moves through the
parts. A lyrical B flat
minor in the central
section allows us to
float like shadows on the
way into a dream.The
song text is a collage.
The first verse, by the
Baroque poet Christian
Hoffmann von
Hoffmannswaldau, is
concerned with the
vanitas motif: the world,
and everything which
seems beautiful to us, is
ephemeral. The second and
third verses were written
in the 18th century by
Johann Gottfried Herder.
Here, the poet expounds
the view that real life
does not take place in
the world and that
people's mathematical
abilities are
insufficient to measure
space and
time.

The
cantata Ich habe meine
Zuversicht BWV 188 comes
from the so-called
Picander cycle and was
written for the 21st
Sunday after Trinity in
1728 or 1729. There are
some particular problems
associated with its
transmission. The
original set of parts was
lost, and the manuscript
score only survives in
fragmentary form.
Probably as early as the
18th century the score
was divided up into
numerous separate parts
in order to make more
money, or to be able to
provide as many Bach
relics as possible for
posterity. The first
movement, an instrumental
sinfonia, is missing
apart from the final
bars. We simply know that
this sinfonia is based on
the 3rd movement of the
Harpsichord Concerto BWV
1052 in D minor and that
instead of the
harpsichord, an obbligato
organ was envisaged. Its
successful reconstruction
by the baroque specialist
and organist Pieter
Dirksen now makes it
possible to perform the
cantata again complete
with the introductory
sinfonia.
