weather-beaten sail is a
sprightly text that
powerfully evokes the
sailor's plea for God's
calming presence upon the
sea's unrelenting rushing
waves. At the opening of
this work for
unaccompanied mixed
voices, the jaunty
alto/tenor movement in
thirds symbolises the
curling waves of the
undulating sea, the
mellifluous soprano
melody represents the
boat's sails, and the
bass section's
never-changing 'A'
provides the anchor. All
four voices then come
together in homophony,
urging God to come
quickly...and take my
soul to rest. Rather than
a simple repetition of
thematic material in the
manner of a standard
hymn, the texture alters
through the rest of the
work until the very end
where all voices
gradually fade away into
the distance, leaving
what seems like a lone
voice in the wilderness
to cry to Thee.
Contrasting to other
well-known setting of
this text, this new work
provides a fresh
interpretation, suitable
for intermediate
choirs.

The truly
blessed are those that
can see the miraculous in
what others see as

blessings for granted.
King David's prayer,
“Restore to me the joy
of Your salvation and
grant me a willing spirit
to sustain me.” (Psalm
51:12) speaks to us in
the times and seasons of
our own lives.This
musical is about the
importance of
remembering. On the eve
of His trial and
execution Jesus made it
clear that we were to
remember Him and His
sacrifice. He instituted
the sacrament of the Last
Supper to be a central
part of the Christian
faith - a time to gather
as His Body and
remember.We cannot stand
in the distance and
casually observe the
sacrifice of the Cross.
We cannot pretend it did
not happen - that it is
less than it is
proclaimed to be - that
it does not touch us or
our lives. The Cross is
not something that we get
used to - not something
that we can get
comfortable with - not
something that we can
ever take lightly.Jesus
Christ, the Son of God,
by His own choice died
nailed to a Cross for the
sins that you and I
committed. May we never
forget His sacrifice, may
we never fail to fall to
our knees in thanksgiving
for that kind of love,
may we never lose the
wonder - the wonder of
the Cross.

Church Cathedral, Oxford
and first performed on
Ascension Sunday, 1994.
Suitable for both church
and concert use, the
music is both lyrical and
dramatic. The
ââ¬ÅSanctusâ
â¬Â begins
quietly, with divided
sopranos trading off on a
major second in a
mysterious and meditative
way. Parts add and build
until the basses enter
with a cantus firmus of
sorts. The major second
continues to figure
prominently in the
ensuing material. The
movement ends with a
simple melody repeated in
unison
(ââ¬ÅHosanna in
excelsisââ¬Â)
fading away into the

choir of St. Paul's Old
Church, Edinburgh, who
gave the first
performance on the 11th
of June 1989 at St.
Giles' Church, Edinburgh,
conducted by Leslie
Shankland. This is a
setting in Scots of the
passage in the Apocalypse
where St. John hears a
voice from the throne,
that voice appearing here
as soprano-alto duets
from a distance,
building, as Davies has
said, ' fine bridge' from
the time of the Edinburgh
church to the present.
Both vocal groups sing in
translucent modal harmony
with organ support.

Multiple
Choirs. The Mass in Space
was begun in the early
1980s and premiered March
12,1983 at Saint Peter's
Church in NYC. After many
years of following
Charles Ives' dictum
concerning spatial music
(Place sound forces in
space according to the
structure of the music)
in the Gregg Smith
Singers' programming,
Gregg decided to write a
larger work completely
devoted to spatial
techniques. Writing music
for space has one major
problem: rhythmic
togetherness. A couple of
modern techniques and
aleatoric devices and
free rhythms are ideal
for solving some of the
problems, especially for
performers at some
distance from the
conductor. Throughout the
Mass, the chorus on stage
and the piano are the set
unit, while the
performers in
back/balcony have greater
rhythmic freedom. All six
movementsKyrie, Gloria,
Credo, Sanctus-Hosanna,
Benetictus-Hosanna and
Agnus Dei pursue a
different spatial
aspect.The Gregg Smith
Singers have performed
excerpts from Mass in
Space all across the US
on several national
tours, and in Russia in
1995 for the St.
Petersburg International
Spring Festival of
Contemporary Music. In a
subsequent tour of
Northern France, GSS was
challenged and thrilled
to sing it in the Riems
Cathedral and in the huge
Amiens Cathedral.
Wherever it has been
performed, audience
reaction has been
overwhelmingly good.
