Whitbourn has also had a very close relationship with the BBC since his beginnings as a composer, working with them on three pieces within The Choral Collection. Eternal Rest and Give Us The Wings Of Faith were both composed specifically for television broadcast, the former (in its orchestral form) was played for the funeral of the Queen Mother in 2002. His longest work, for which he is most famous, is a setting of text from'the Diary of Anne Frank'. There Is No Speech Or Language comes from this work, taking its text from other sources, but that still maintain the beauty and tragedy of the wider piece. Celebrate HM The Queen's 90th Birthday with your choir Sing Judith Weir's special new choral piece I Love All Beauteous Things Master of the Queen's Music, Judith Weir, has been commissioned by St Paul's Cathedral in London to write a piece for SATB choir and organ in celebration of HM The Queen's 90th birthday in 2016. The piece is now available from Chester Music, so that choirs all over the world can join in with the festivities. Churches and other local organisations are planning events on Sunday 12th June and many may want to include this approachable setting of Robert Bridges' poem. Directed by Andrew Carwood, the St Paul's Cathedral Choir will perform I love all beauteous things as part of the National Service of Thanksgiving which will take place on at 11am on 10 June in the presence of HM The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. At the service the Archbishop of Canterbury will give the address and the Prime Minister will read a lesson. The event will be televised live on BBC1. Composed in 1990, and revised in 1991, for SATB Choir or soloists with organ accompaniment, Pärt's setting of The Beatitudes is one of only a handful of works (Litany and And One of the Pharisees also falling into that category) composed in English. Taken from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, as found in Matthew 5:1-12, The Beatitudes provide a fitting structure for Pärt's setting. Each verse states a godly quality and the blessing attached to it; all except the last verse begin with the word 'blessed'. The Beatitudes was premiered on 25 May 1990 at the Nathanaelkirche, Berlin, by the Theatre of Voices choir, conducted by Paul Hillier. Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. The cantata ' Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis ” dates from around 1713 and was probably performed for the first time that year in the Liebfrauenkirche in Halle . Its assigning to the third Sunday after Trinity probably only occurred the following year. With its large-scale structure and strong emphasis on biblical texts, it was extremely popular in the 19th century and remains one of Bach's best-known cantatas today. The ' Messe de Requiem? is probably the internationally best-known and most frequently performed work by Gabriel Fauré . The composer's first version was limited to just five movements and small-scale forces with low strings, harp and organ. The work was then expanded several times culminating in the version for large orchestra of 1900. This orchestral version forms the basis of this edition.Despite its comparatively long period of gestation, the Requiem forms a stylistic unity. Unlike other requiem settings, the composer foregoes any theatrical gestures in this work. A restrained dynamic range together with graceful melodic writing for both soloists and choir give the work a gentle and optimistic character.The choral score just as the vocal score are based on the volume of the Complete Works of Gabriel Fauré (BA 9461) published in 2010. Par BRITTEN BENJAMIN. These settings of poems by Gerard Manley Hopkins , the Jesuit poet, were written while Benjamin Britten was resident in America. The title is a shorthand form of a pious inscription, Ad Majoram Dei Gloriam , often placed at the head of a piece of work. These well-known words seem endlessly fruitful for the composer and conjure up such lovely images which strike each of us in our own way. For me it was the beauty of the language with its flower imagery which made me want to set the words with richly warm harmony and to temper that with gently imitative refrains. The important element in approaching the performance of this carol is the blend and balance of voices. With divisi writing and characteristically colourful harmonies, it is important that each note in the texture is given equal weight. It is also desirable that the tempo should be flexible and that phrase ends should be given a little time, especially at those moments marked either with a comma or tenuto. The final section starting with the upper voices should be ethereal and when the tenors and basses join they should do so gently to balance the upper parts. The bulk of the carol should be conducted in a minim beat, as indicated by the 2/2 time signature. Subdivisions should only be necessary at rallentandos. The piece should flow freely. 3/4 bars can be conducted in one to continue to encourage the carol's flow. Paul Mealor's setting of the Latin hymn, Ubi Caritas , was composed for the Marriage of His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales, K.G. to Miss Catherine Middleton and first performed by the Choirs of Westminster Abbey and Her Majesty's Chapel Royal, St James's Palace, conducted by James O'Donnell, at the wedding service at Westminster Abbey on Friday, 29th April 2011. 'My new piece, Ubi Caritas for the Royal Wedding, takes its text from the sixth century Christian hymn that was normally sung at the service for the washing of the feet on Maundy Thursday.
