h composed the cantata
Jesus schlaft, was soll
ich hoffen [Jesus sleeps,
what hope have I] BWV 81
for the fourth Epiphany
Sunday, 1724. The cantata
is structured as a little
drama: In the beginning,
fear prevails. The seas
rage and Jesus is asleep.
The threateningly foaming
waves are vividly
depicted in the soughing
string accompaniment of
the tenor aria. Jesus's
words Ihr Kleinglaubigen,
warum seid ihr so
furchtsam? [You of little
faith, why are you so
fearful?] are set as a
bass arioso at the center
of the cantata; they
provide the turning
point. In the subsequent
bass aria, the towering
seas are silenced. A
recitative - Wohl mir
[Well for me] - leads
into the closing chorale
with its certainty Unter
deinen Schirmen bin ich
vor den Sturmen aller
Feinde frei [Under Your
protection I am spared
the tempests of my

Israeli Folk
song. Earlene Rentz
has arranged this
traditional Israeli dance
song quoting the Round
Toembai. Sure to be the
piece the audience will
find themselves humming
for days to come! Also
available for Two-Part
Treble Voices (CM9192),

(CM9210) and Tenor-Bass

ALINU This song was a
favorite of the Israeli
pioneers who returned to
live in the land of
Israel. As they planted
crops and brought the
land back to cultivation,
they sang and danced in
the hope that the land of
Israel would be rebuilt.
Pronunciation Guide and
general translation:
Artza alinu We have gone
up to our land, AHR-tzah
ah-LEE-noo K'var
*charashnu v'gam zaranu
There we have plowed and
sown, Kih-VAHR
*hah-RAHSH-noo vih-GAHM
zah-RAH-noo Aval **od
**lo katzarnu but we
still have not reaped.
Ah-VAHL ohd loh
kaht-ZAHR-noo *The ch is
pronounced using a
guttural sound (not a
hard k), and uses air to
begin the sound.
Actually, the sound is
somewhere in between an h
and a k. **These words
use the long o sound (i.
e., like the English ode
and low). TOEMBAI Toembai

Hungarian Folk. In
2014, Chanticleer
commissioned me to make a
new arrangement of the
Hungarian-Romani folk
song Jarba, Mare Jarba
for their 2014 touring
program. Passed down
orally through the Romani
communities, this
beautiful folk song, with
text in a language called
Beas (beh-osh), speaks of
a deep longing to visit
one's homeland, a place
where the singer can
never return. Chanticleer
consists of twelve men
whose vocal ranges span
from low bass to high
soprano, equivalent to
the range of a mixed
choir of women and men. I
composed slow sections of
original material to
represent the singers'
longing to return home;
these are interspersed
with the folk song's
traditional fast
sections. The
incorporated shouts and
calls in the score are
typically found in the
performance of Central
European folk songs. I
hope you enjoy singing
this new version of
Jarba, Mare Jarba that
contains all of the vigor
and excitement of the
Chanticleer version.
PERFORMANCE NOTES All
spoken sounds (indicated
by x noteheads) should be
performed by individuals.
Feel free to elaborate
with more sounds of your
own in the tradition of
Eastern European folk
music. If the piece is
memorized, feel free to
experiment with clapping
on the off-beats of m. 93
to the end. TEXT

English-German-French-Dut
ch. Le Lion de
Belfort was composed
for the official
inauguration of the
sculpture Le Lion de
Belfort: an enormous
red sandstone lion that
dominates the landscape
of the French city of
Belfort. This 22 metre
long and 11 metre high
lion symbolises the
heroic French resistance
during the Prussian siege
of Belfort in 1870-1871.
The composer added a
narrator and three-part
choir to the concert band
instrumentation, who
utilise texts written
specially for the
occasion by Jean
Ehret.The workâ??s
première took place at
the inauguration of Le
Lion de Belfort on 28
November 2010, 130 years
after sculptor
Frédéric Auguste
Bartholdi (1834-1904)
completed the
statue.
Dit werk
is geschreven voor de
officiële inwijding
van het beeldhouwwerk Le
Lion de Belfort: een
enorme uit rodezandsteen
gebeeldhouwde leeuw die
het gezicht van de Franse
stad Belfort bepaalt. De
22 meter lange en 11
meterhoge
leeuwsymboliseert het
heldhaftige Franse verzet
tijdens het beleg van
Belfort door de Pruisen
in 1870-1871. De
componist voegde aan het
harmonieorkest een
verteller en driestemmig
koor toe, waarbij hij
gebruikmaakte van
despeciaalvoor deze
gelegenheid geschreven
teksten van Jean Ehret.De
première van de
compositie vond - ter
gelegenheid van die
inwijding - plaats op 28
november 2010, maar
liefst 130jaar nadat het
standbeeld door de Franse
beeldhouwer
FrédéricAuguste
Bartholdi (1834-1904)
werd
voltooid.
Le
Lion de Belfort (Der
Löwe von Belfort)
wurde fu?r die offizielle
Einweihung der
gleichnamigen Skulptur
geschrieben: Diese ist
ein riesiger Löwe aus
Sandstein, der das Bild
der französischen
Stadt Belfort prägt.
Der 22 Meter lange und 11
Meter hohe Löwe
symbolisiert den
heldenhaften Widerstand
der Franzosen während
der preuÃ?ischen
Belagerung Belforts
1870-1871. Der Komponist
ergänzte die
Blasorchesterbesetzung um
einen Erzähler und
einen dreistimmigen Chor,
die speziell fu?r diesen
Anlass von Jean Ehret
verfasste Texte
vortragen.Die Premiere
