A balm of
assurance, the lyrics of
this song are a reminder
that God not only sees
and hears us, but
understands our pain
through His own human
sorrow and suffering on
this earth. Inspiring
words are joined to
lightly contemporary
music to create a rich
and melodically
compelling anthem. A full
expressive range is
explored as the piece
unfolds, bringing layers
of meaning and purpose to
the promise of God's
eternal presence with
us.

Bach's
cantata My God alone this
heart possesses BWV 169
is from his third annual
cantata cycle in Leipzig;
it was first performed on
20 October 1726 for the
18th Sunday after
Trinity. As recent
research has shown, the
text was written by the
Leipzig student,
Christoph Birkmann. With
the exception of the
final chorale, this is a
cantata for solo alto
with, of course, a rich
orchestral scoring
consisting of three
oboes, obbligato organ
and strings. The first
purely instrumental
movement can be traced
back to an instrumental
concerto, which has been
lost, after Bach had also
composed the Keyboard
Concerto in E major BWV
1053. The lyrical-vocal
highpoint of the cantata
is the fifth movement,
which is also based on
the concerto and it shows
off Bach's arranging
artistry to the highest
degree. Among the
movements are an
aria-like recitative
vocal movement, as well
as another aria with an
almost virtuoso organ
accompaniment. Score and

The

2002 as a result of a
comission from my friend
Gary Graden. For many
years I've found those
words from the Old

fascinating - as everyone

Vanity of vanities! All
is vanity! Writers,
painters and filmmakers
have for centuries been
dealing with the subject
and I found it high time
to set the famous words
to music. The suite, for
soloists, choir and
violoncello, consists of
six movements, each one
enlighting a different
view of life and
afterlife, and also, as
Matthew Arnold puts it of
human misery. Yet the
suite is full of hope and
humanity, specially
recognizable in the two
central parts, Dulce
lumen and Omnia tempus
habent. The music was
completed in 2009.

You are

stunning piece with words
