Silvestri, Charles
Anthony.
â??Tonigh
t I Dance Aloneâ? for
double choir a cappella
consists of three
poignant episodes from
the life of an old man.
We encounter him before
his wedding, before
celebrating his wedding
anniversary and now as an
elderly widower who says
to his
grandson:
â??Soon
we will dance in the
God-light, My love
and I. Soon will the
moon be ours again,
And the endless
shining stars In the
halls of heaven.
Soon, my love, very
soon; But tonight,
one last time,
Tonight I dance
alone.â?
The
libretto and the
descriptive music are
deeply moving and
constitute an ideal
partnership. This is
MÃ¥rten Jansson's first
collaboration with the
well-known librettist
Charles Anthony
Silvestri. The piece
provides a well-worth
challenge for ambitious
choirs.
It was
world-premiered by the
Saint Louis Chamber
Chorus under the baton of
Philip Barnes on 1
October 2017 in Saint
Louis, MO

T.N.TAs a matter of
practicality, when I was
first asked to write a
piece for the New York
Theatrical Community
Choir in 2005 by its
music director, David
Wolfson, I immediately
decided to write a Kyrie.
After all, I thought...,
the text is only about
four words and eliminated
the need for a lyricist.
Most appealing, however,
was the fact that it
would bring me one step
closer to finishing the
Mass that I was in the
process of writing. If
ever there was a case to
be made for divine
inspiration this appeared
to be it. David Wolfson
liked the idea and
casually mentioned that
there was another Kyrie
and a religious hymn on
the program. He also
mentioned that the choir
consisted predominantly
of actors that sing.Like
a bolt of lightning,
divine intervention
interceded whereupon I
instantly realized that
he needed a piece to wake
up the audience, not
another Kyrie. I took a
breath and spontaneously
began to talk through and
improvise the concept of
a piece that became the
basis for Taxi.At that
moment I was clueless as
to what kind of piece I
would write but it
appeared to be a good
idea at the time. David's
reaction to my
presentation was
something like Okay,...I
have no idea what you are
talking about but let's
try it. After a very
successful public
performance, he was
delighted that I decided
not to write a Kyrie and
remarked that writ-ing a
piece like Taxi for this
group was like feeding
raw meat to a pack of
hungry lions. At that
moment, the idea of doing
a trilogy of similar
pieces was born. For the
last two seasons of the
choir's existence I was
asked to write a new
piece and... as a matter
of practicality, I
happily agreed.-- Joe
GianonoNote: Taxi, Noise,
and Time may be performed
separately.

Latin compiled from the
charter of the
University, and from
older orations in praise
of Basle by Bernhard
Wyss.

Difficulty
level: 4 (for
chorus)
Britten's
genius lifts this work
above being just a worthy
celebration of the 500th
anniversary of the
foundation of Basle
University. It is
tongue-in-cheek and
mockingly non-academic
while referring all the
time to academic musical
forms and formulae. It is
written in two parts
(everything is in the
statutory Latin including
the titles of the parts -
Pars I and Pars II). The
titles of the movements
show Britten's intention
to show off a wide
variety of techniques.
Here are some examples:
Chorale/Alla Rovescio
(the theme is given and
responded to with the
same melody upside
down)/Recitativo/Tema
seriale con fuga/Canone
ed ostinato. There is a
good deal of humour
here.
There are
seven movements in Pars I
and six in Pars II. The
tenor soloist is given
three florid recitatives,
accompanied only by a
piano, which act as
bridges between other
orchestrally accompanied
movements. Of these the
most noteworthy are the
Arioso con canto popolare
for soprano solo with
tenors and basses who hum
a student song; another
terrific Britten scherzo;
and a wonderfully raucous
final pair of movements
(Canon ed ostinato and
Corale con canto) where
Britten seems to be aping
the Vivat Regina! cries
in Parry's I was glad or
encouraging the kind of
noisy 'I'm from the best
university' kind of
student touchline shout.
This has outrageously
high notes for the tenors
(top B) which further
endorse this feeling.
There are real echoes of
the Spring Symphony (see
separate entry) final
movement here which are
further underlined by the
last section of the
Cantata which brings in
the bells, piano, huge
percussion and the
inevitable chorale in
which the choir sings
'that a free academy may
thrive in a free
community, for ever the
ornament and treasure of
illustrious
Basle'.
This may
not be Britten at his
most soul-searching but,
as always, there is
plenty here to enjoy,
especially if the work is
not taken too seriously.
It is a celebratory,
occasional piece and it
could be well taken up by
other academic
establishments
celebrating big
anniversaries. The chorus
parts are not very
difficult, though they do
present challenges for
the choir - not least in
having tenors capable of
those very high notes at
the end. The Tema seriale
con fuga is sinewy and
needs careful tuning. It
also has the subject
regularly given upside
down after its initial
sounding by the basses.
All good
fun.

oratorio Judas Maccabaeus
is one of George Frideric
Handel's most popular
choral works. It was
performed over fifty
times during the
composer's lifetime and
was one of his first
works to be performed in
Germany (1772). The
frequent performances
given by Handel himself
resulted in a
particularly large number
of reworkings, reflecting
local conditions. This
new edition therefore
offers the work in two
performable versions:
firstly, the version of
the first performance in
1747, and the one from
the last oratorio season
during Handel's lifetime
(1758/59). This makes
available all the
choruses and arias which
Handel ever wrote for
Judas Maccabaeus.
Reflecting the latest
Handel research, the
edition is based for the
first time throughout on
Handel's conductor's
score, thereby
eradicating not only
long-perpetuated
mistakes, but also
providing clarity about
which pieces were
actually performed by
Handel. By contrast with
the Chrysander edition

aria Father of heav'n
which introduces Part III
is included here in its

The world
premiere of A New
Commandment , a piece by
the late Sir John Tavener
specially commissioned
for Summer Fields, was in
February 2014 at the
Sheldonian Theatre,
Oxford. This work was
possibly one of his very
last commissions before
his sudden and untimely
death in November 2013.
COMPOSER'S NOTE I have
set these words from St
John's Gospel many times,
because I feel them to be
among the most profound
and therefore key texts
in the Christian faith.
This setting falls into
three sections with an
ABA structure. A New
Commandment is dedicated
to my mother-in-law Mary,
but it is also an
unspoken tribute to the
Spanish master Victoria
who has inspired
methroughout my
life..

It is a
small music history
sensation: Thanks to Yves
Grard an unknown and
unpublished manuscript
penned by Camille
Saint-Saëns has been
unearthed in the
Mdiathèque Jean Renoir
in Dieppe in
France.
It is the
top four instrumental
parts which make this
manuscript something of a
sensation. Placed under
each other are
â??Saxophone Soprano en
Si bâ?, â??Saxophone
Alto en Mi bâ?,
â??Saxophone Tnor en Si
bâ? and â??Saxophone
Baryton en Mi bâ?,
strings, soprano solo
with chorus and organ.
Musical history has
hitherto credited
Jean-Baptiste Singele
(1812â??1875) with
having written the first
saxophone quartet, his
opus 53, which he
completed in 1857. Now
this historiography
clearly has to be
revised. The date 1854
has been found under the
first page of the
treasure from Dieppe,
which is pasted over and
also sewn, meaning that
Saint-Saënsâ?? work
was written three years
earlier than that of
Singele.
In
contrast to Singele,
Saint-Saëns does not
have the wind instruments
taking solo parts but
rather uses their tonal
colour to depict textual
moods and nuances. On the
one hand the saxophones
accompany the choral
parts (certainly singable
by amateurs) and support
the human voices in fugal
passages. On the other
hand, they take the
melody in the purely
orchestral
passages.
Saint-Sa
ëns wrote the motet in
the period when he had
taken up his first
permanent appointment as
organist at the Church of
Saint-Merri in Paris. He
revised the work several
times over the decades,
changing the motifs at
the beginning, correcting
obvious mistakes,
reworking the ending,
eventually changing the
instrumentation several
times and even â??
probably in the final
stage â?? replacing the
Latin text with an
English one. Today,
three-and-a-half versions
have been handed down,
one of them stopping
after just a few pages.
The compositional steps
have been successfully
reconstructed by means of
detailed detective work.
Furthermore, the first
saxophone version (BA
11305) and the last
English piano version (BA
11309) have been edited
to produce a
scholarly-critical
edition.
The
present edition of the
English version for
soprano solo, choir and
piano (BA 11309) serves
both as a full score and
as a vocal score due to
the
instrumentation.

T.N.TAs a matter of
practicality, when I was
first asked to write a
piece for the New York
Theatrical Community
Choir in 2005 by its
music director, David
Wolfson, I immediately
decided to write a Kyrie.
After all, I thought...,
the text is only about
four words and eliminated
the need for a lyricist.
Most appealing, however,
was the fact that it
would bring me one step
closer to finishing the
Mass that I was in the
process of writing. If
ever there was a case to
be made for divine
inspiration this appeared
to be it. David Wolfson
liked the idea and
casually mentioned that
there was another Kyrie
and a religious hymn on
the program. He also
mentioned that the choir
consisted predominantly
of actors that sing.Like
a bolt of lightning,
divine intervention
interceded whereupon I
instantly realized that
he needed a piece to wake
up the audience, not
another Kyrie. I took a
breath and spontaneously
began to talk through and
improvise the concept of
a piece that became the
basis for Taxi.At that
moment I was clueless as
to what kind of piece I
would write but it
appeared to be a good
idea at the time. David's
reaction to my
presentation was
something like Okay,...I
have no idea what you are
talking about but let's
try it. After a very
successful public
performance, he was
delighted that I decided
not to write a Kyrie and
remarked that writ-ing a
piece like Taxi for this
group was like feeding
raw meat to a pack of
hungry lions. At that
moment, the idea of doing
a trilogy of similar
pieces was born. For the
last two seasons of the
choir's existence I was
asked to write a new
piece and... as a matter
of practicality, I
happily agreed.-- Joe

and Time may be performed
separately.

about Gedanken uber die
Zeit:Paul Fleming was
one of the most important
lyric poets in German
Baroque literature. He
wrote his poem Gedanken
uber die Zeit in his
early twenties; it was
first published in 1634
as an epitaph. All the
nuances of the concept of
time are artistically
contrasted, and the motif
Zeit (time) is explored
and played with in a
dialectical
manner.The male
voices begin in unison at
an andante maestoso
tempo, followed by a
leisurely progress in
homophonic writing in a
slightly freer rhythm. A
lively middle section
follows which leads into
the opening motif again
in the last section. The
third section contains a
fugue, and the end is
unison once again. And so
the words are like a
manifesto by the poet.
