Conversat
ional Solfege is a
dynamic and captivating
first-through-eighth
grade general music
program that enables
students to become
independent musical
thinkers with the help of
a rich variety of folk
and classical
music. It is organized
around increasingly
complex rhythmic and
melodic content. Each new
rhythmic or melodic
element is discovered
first in patterns and
then reinforced with folk
songs, rhymes, and
classical examples.
Central to the
Conversational Solfege
program is the use of
music harvested from our
rich and diverse American
musical history. This
variety of music serves
as a common thread that
spans and bonds
generations. Each book
contains varied song
material so the teacher
can select appropriate
music for the lower
grades or older
beginners. This 12-step
teaching method carefully
brings students from
readiness to, ultimately,
creating music through
inner hearing and then
transferring their
musical thoughts into
notation—in other
words, to compose music!
This CD provides
14Â classical
selections referenced in
Conversational Solfege
Level 2. These examples
provide reinforcement for
emerging literacy skills,
and they also enable
students to listen to
wonderful classical
examples with greater
attention. Listening to
classical music can be
challenging for
elementary students. With
nothing to hang onto, the
many notes can be too
much to comprehend and
attention soon wanes. But
with minimal literacy
skills, students will
have enough musical
information to discover
that classical music can
be accessible and
appealing. In the
included booklet, timings
are given for each
selection and the
portions of the music
that are readable by the
students are reproduced.
Whether using this CD
with Conversational
Solfege instructional
materials or simply as a
resource of classical
music with simple to read
rhythmic and melodic
material, both teachers
and students will delight
in discovering this
wonderful music through
literacy. This series is
a complete, innovative
approach to teaching
music that will stay
fresh year after year.

The
Reformation cantata Ein
feste Burg ist unser Gott
BWV 80b, published by
Carus-Verlag for the
first time in a practical
performing edition,
remained unknown to Bach
scholars until well into
the 20th century. The
evidence of its existence
is three fragments of the
first folio of Bach's
score, which can be dated
to the years 1728-1731.
By contrast, the
long-familiar expanded
new version of the
cantata with its powerful
opening chorus (BWV 80)
dates from the 1730s or
1740s. It only survives
in a copy of Bach's
score, but this allows
conclusions to be drawn
about the history of the
versions; thus, by using
the fragments mentioned
above, it has been
possible to reconstruct
the first version. This
result is a Bach cantata
which is less extensive
and in a more concise
normal format, with
reduced wind instruments.
A relaxed, contrapuntal
four-part chorale
movement with the first
and last verses of the
Lutheran hymn forms the
framework, and the other
movements are the same as
in the later new version.
This simpler cantata is
also entirely suitable
for celebrating
Reformation Day, as Bach
did around 1730. Score
available separately -
see item CA.3108000.

Program
note:
Looking Up
is a piece for large
chorus and orchestra, and
is in three sections,
played without pause. In
the 16th century, a
variety of psalters in
meter were printed in
England, with the idea of
making psalm-singing
something that could
happen easily at home,
with the rhyming meter
being an aid to
memorization. These
translations are
wonderful exercises in
brevity and sometimes
clumsy rhymemaking, and
were usually prefaced by
a lengthy explanation as
to their merits; the
title of one of the first
such volumes in English
is: The Psalter of Dauid
newely translated into
Englysh metre in such
sort that it maye the
more decently, and wyth
more delyte of the mynde,
be reade and songe of al
men. I thought it would
be appropriate to set one
of these introductions,
and the first section of
Looking Up sets the
preface to Thomas
Ravenscroft's psalter
(1621), in which he
writes: “The
singing of Psalmes (assay
the Doctors) comforteth
the sorrowfull, pacifieth
the angry, strengtheneth
the weake, humbleth the
proud, gladdeth the
humble, stirres up the
slow, reconcileth
enemies, lifteth up the
heart to heavenly things,
and uniteth the Creature
to his
Creator.”
It
begins meditatively, but
eventually grows agitated
and fervent, with a
vision of the
“quire of Angels
and Saints”
“redoubling
anddescanting” - an
ecstatic and terrifying
vision of the skies
opening up. Ravenscroft
then encourages the use
of instrumental musicfor
worship, at which point,
a long, acrobatic
orchestral interlude with
jagged edges antagonizes
the choir, who sing a
kind of private, anxious
meditation on two
pitches.
One of
the most delicious
biblical texts is an
Apocryphal prayer known
as the Benedicite or the
Prayer of the Three
Children (the same who
were rescued by an angel
after King Nebuchadnezzar
tried to have them burnt
in an oven for not bowing
to his image). The text
is repetitive, obsessive,
and a gift to composers -
each line is an
invocation of an element
of the natural world,
followed by the phrase,
“blesse ye the
Lord, praise him &
magnify him for
ever.” In Looking
Up, the setting begins
with three solo voices,
and then grows to include
the whole choir,
itemizing the whole of
creation. The idea that
these boys are spared
from the furnace and then
five minutes later are
saying, “O ye the
fire and warming heate,
blesse ye the
Lord...” has always
felt very loaded to me,
and the orchestra plays
with this conflict
between joyful praise and
a more terrible (in the
16th-century sense)
awefor the
divine.
The text
for the third, and
shortest, section is
taken from Christopher
Smart's (1722-1771) A
Song to David,
purportedly written
during his confinement in
a mental asylum. This ode
to King David points out
how David, as the author
of some of the Psalms,
observes the whole world
from the
“clustering
spheres” to the
“nosegay in the
vale.&rdquo.

“My
Lord! What a Morning”
follows the tradition of
spirituals by opening
with a soulful chorus
expressing deep
sentiment. The verse that
ensues not only
introduces musical
diversity but also serves
as the narrative
foundation, providing
context for the emotional
chorus that follows. This
structure creates a
compelling ABA format:
while the A section
vividly describes the
falling stars, the B
section poignantly
alludes to the impending
second coming of the Son
of God as the catalyst
behind this celestial
event. This piece
captures the stark
contrast of the B section
through staggered vocal
entrances, a brisker
tempo, and a crescendo
culminating in a
hauntingly profound chord
on the word
“underground” in bar
22. This is predominantly
an SAB arrangement,
occasionally diverging
with nuanced vocal splits
in the lowest voice part.
The juxtaposition of
these elements ensures an
evocative and captivating
performance, painting a
vivid musical picture of
this spiritual
masterpiece.

As Tim
Sharp travels the world
as an ambassador for
choral music he sometimes
hears composers in
foreign lands that
deserve our attention. So
is the case with this
selection based on the
Sara Teasdale poem about
clouds. The young
composer is committed to
melody in a way that is a

seems right. The harmonic
treatment is sensitive

The work is
written from an old
Icelandic psalm by Olafur
á Söndum
(1560-1627).There are 52
verses in the psalm -
four of them are used in
this piece.
An incredibly
well-crafted patriotic
piece that honors those
who have sacrificed for
our freedoms. The text is
a poem from a survivor
that pays tribute while
being uplifting. The
choral writing is careful
and gracious. The piccolo
offers an approrpriate
sonority, as do the
occasional handbells.
Bringing the military
hymn, Eternal Father
Strong to Save is a
crowing touch. High
school, college, and
community choirs will
find this piece most
useful for many reasons.
Medium in difficulty.
