Hungarian Folk.
In
2014, Chanticleer
commissioned me to make a
new arrangement of the
Hungarian-Romani folk
song Jarba, Mare Jarba
for their 2014 touring
program. Passed down
orally through the Romani
communities, this
beautiful folk song, with
text in a language called
Beas (beh-osh), speaks of
a deep longing to visit
one's homeland, a place
where the singer can
never return. Chanticleer
consists of twelve men
whose vocal ranges span
from low bass to high
soprano, equivalent to
the range of a mixed
choir of women and men. I
composed slow sections of
original material to
represent the singers'
longing to return home;
these are interspersed
with the folk song's
traditional fast
sections. The
incorporated shouts and
calls in the score are
typically found in the
performance of Central
European folk songs. I
hope you enjoy singing
this new version of
Jarba, Mare Jarba that
contains all of the vigor
and excitement of the
Chanticleer version.
PERFORMANCE NOTES All

Žibuoklė
MartinaitytÄ— tells
about the background of
Aletheia (2022) for mixed
choir (SSSSAAAATTTTBBBB):
Aletheia is variously
translated from Greek as
unconcealedness,
revealing or
unclosedness. It is
uncovering of the Truth -
the one we are afraid to
face, the truth that can
only be expressed
directly through the
pre-verbal communication.
How do you find words for
the horrors of the war,
for all unimaginable
global atrocities? How do
you even allow yourself
to feel it out? Solely
through art, through
music that offer a safe
space and a formalized
framework for processing
these accumulated complex
emotions and sharing them
with others in a moment.
This piece has no verbal
text and it is based on
various combinations of
vowels and consonants,
thus connecting us on a
deeper level through the
immediate emotional
experience.
The
war in Ukraine in spring
of 2022 had an impact on
all of us and shattered
my deeply rooted
Lithuanian identity. When
the freedom is threatened
and innocent people are
dying, it is hard to make
sense out of the reality.
Yet there is poetry even
in the worst nightmares.
I was imagining that the
only instrument people
have even in situations
of destruction, in the
midst of the war, is
their VOICE. It brought
back memories of my youth
when Singing revolution
was taking place in the
Baltic countries. Human
voice was the only weapon
that people used to
express their
determination for freedom
and independence. Voice
is our first and the very
last instrument we have
in our lifetime. Thinking
in these terms brings
almost a sacred dimension
to the voice as an
expression of the life
itself - from the very
first baby's scream until
the last breath and
whisper.

The works
of New York -based
Lithuanian composer
Žibuoklė
MartinaitytÄ— (b.
1973) have been lauded as
breathtaking and
profoundly moving. Her
stimulating music
bristles with energy and
tension and revolves
often around the subject
of beauty, which she
calls both a guiding
principle and an
aesthetic measure for
sonic quality.

Alex
Freeman's (b. 1972)
Cathedral of Spring for
chamber choir (2019) to
poems of e.e. cummings
and Robert Frost was
commissioned and
premiered by Somnium
Ensemble. The composer
tells: For the
celebration of the 10th
anniversary of Somnium
Ensemble (Finland), I was
commissioned to write a
piece with spring as a
central theme. While
contemplating that and
perusing appropriate
poetry, I was inspired by
memories of the
night-time sky in early
spring--the warm air, the
teeming, buzzing energy
of life all around, and
an expansive dome of
stars overhead. I then
imagined that moment in
time as a kind of sacred
space; this is the point
where the cathedral
notion came to mind. The
frenetic and joyous
poetry of e.e. cummings,
from his Epithalamion,
gives an exclamatory
introduction to the set,
followed by his vision of
spring from the point of
view of giddy children in
his iconic poem, [in
Just-]. We then take a
moment to contemplate the
ephemerality of all this
beauty (spring giveth and
spring taketh away, i.e.
an offertorium of sorts);
Robert Frost's
Blue-Butterfly Day places
us in a moment where, by
chance, we find ourselves
enveloped by a delicately
fluttering swarm of
butterflies. Peaceful and
still, yet in constant
flux, we spend a some
time taking that
phenomenon in, while also
experiencing a twinge of
the realisation that this
is truly fleeting. The
final movement, returning
to a later stanza from
Epithalamion, cummings's
sparkling paean to May is
set as a kind of final
anthem..

Written in
memory of Erich Fried
(1921-1988), a writer who
wrote the libretto for
Goehr's opera Arden Must
Die and whose poems were
set in Warngedichte (op.
22), Carol for St Steven
is a short and playful
carol about St Steven as
a servant boy in King
Herod's Hall. Seeing the
Star and realising that
Jesus has been born, the
boy tells King Herod
whose overreaction
results in Steven being
stoned to death
(explaining why the Vigil
of St Stephen takes place
on Christmas Night). With
a treble soloist singing
the lines of Steven and a
bass singing the parts of
Herod, Goehr's carol for
St Steven is an
alternative carol in many
senses, but one that
would be ideal for both
amateur and professional
choirs looking for new
repertoire.

This Christmas
cantata was conceived
with two main ideas: to
provide a new cantata
that was accessible to
most choirs, and to
provide a major work that
would have wide appeal to
choirs and congregations.
Tidings of Great Joy uses
brief melodic quotes from
familiar carols
interwoven with new
material (text and music)
to tell the story of
Christmas in a fresh way.
There is considerable
variety in the
instrumentation and vocal
work, providing for
several soloists, women's
chorus, men's chorus and
an octet. Even though it
is quite acceptable to
perform this work with
organ only, the use of
instruments adds greatly
to the overall effect and
success of the piece.

Telling of a shepherd

instrumentation and vocal
work, providing for
several soloists, women's
chorus, men's chorus and
an octet. Even though it
is quite acceptable to
perform this work with
organ only, the use of
instruments adds greatly
to the overall effect and
success of the piece.
