Viktor
Ullmann composed his
choral arrangements of
Hebrew, Yiddish and
Chassidic songs in the
ghetto of Theresienstadt
in 1943/1944. In the
function of 'Head of the
Studio for New Music',
Ullmann made a
significant contribution
to the so-called 'leisure
activities' in the
ghetto. The works were
evidently intended for
the repertoire of the
various choirs at
Theresienstadt, including
children's choirs such as
the Karel Vrbas Youth
Choir in which Ullmann's
son Max also sang. There
is no evidence to confirm
that Ullmann's choral
works were actually
performed in
Theresienstadt, for
example in one of the
frequent concerts given
by Rafael Schachter's
choir of up to a hundred
voices (cf. Milan Kuna,
Musik an der Grenze des
Lebens, 21998. p.313).
The German translations
below first appeared in
the song book
Makkabi-Liederbuch
published in Berlin in
1930 (2nd edition 1935)
which was available to
Viktor Ullmann as a
source for the melodies
and text orthography for
his choral arrangements
in Theresienstadt.

Melo
dious evening songs lend
themselves to a quiet
ending or an
imaginatively accented
concert. This choral
collection is a selection
with about 40 English,
German and international
lullabies and evening
songs of stylistic
diversity, with easily
singable settings for a
mixed choir, some of
which include piano
accompaniments. The
repertoire ranges from
Baroque and Romantic
works to contemporary
works, with settings
newly-composed for the
collection and well-known
lullabies and evening
songs. The conductor's
volume includes a CD with
recordings of selected
pieces. The songs chosen
are largely from the
German and English
repertoire, but also
include pieces in
Spanish, French, and
Russian. With well-known
compositions by composers
such as J. S. Bach,
Brahms, Elgar,
Mendelssohn Bartholdy,
Rheinberger, Scholefield,
Stanford, and Sullivan.
Ten of the songs have
been newly-arranged
specially for this
collection by leading
composers (Ludwig Bohme,
Daniel Carter, Ian
McDougal, Gunther Martin
Gottsche, Reijo Kekkonen,
Clifford W. King, Andrej
Makor, Giacomo Mezzalira,
Christoph Muller, and
Peter Schindler). Easy to
medium difficulty. Mainly
for (S)SATB choir a
cappella, a few settings
with piano accompaniment.
A CD with selected songs
is included with the
conductor's volume. The
choral collection is
published as Conductor's
volume with CD and
editionchor (budget
edition for choral
singers).

With Carl
Friedrich Zelter's motet
Wachet auf, ruft uns die
Stimme, Hermann Max,
editor of the Choral
Treasury series, has
uncovered a real
treasure. The three-verse
text of the motet for
mixed choir (SATB) and
basso continuo was
written by Friedrich
Gottlob Klopstock who
kept close to the Advent
song of the same name by
Philipp Nicolai. During
Zelter's lifetime, the
motet enjoyed great
popularity. And quite
rightly so: For the music
teacher and friend of
Goethe turned out to be a
composer with an
extraordinary sense of
tone. An introductory
choral movement is
followed by a captivating
bass aria which can be
optionally sung by all
basses of the choir. The
piece culminates in an
elaborate virtuoso fugue
with an interwoven cantus
firmus in the bass. A
demanding, yet highly
rewarding rarity in
church music!

“A
lmiraâ€,
Handel’s first
opera, was well received
when premiered in 1705 at
the Theater am
Gänsemarkt in Hamburg.
The director was Reinhard
Keiser, who, remarkably,
had himself already set
Friedrich Christian
Feustking’s text
to music. The role of
Fernando was sung by
Johann Mattheson. The
translation used by
Handel leaves several
Italian arias in their
original language,
resulting in a delightful
mixture of German and
Italian.
The opera
which, after sundry
entangled romances, ends
in the wedding of three
couples, is characterised
by exuberant scenes: the
procession at
Almira’s crowning
ceremony, a duel, a
prison scene and a
masked-ball involving the
three continents Europe,
Africa and Asia.
The vocal score
to “Almiraâ€
by George Frideric Handel
brings about a small
sensation: Whilst
conducting a reenactment
of this work in 1732,
Georg Philipp Telemann
removed the Aria no. 28
“Ingrato,
spietato†from his
conducting score. Since
then this aria has been
deemed lost. Due to
necessity only the edited
vocal text devoid of any
music was presented in
the 1994 volume of the
“Halle Handel
Editionâ€.
Thanks to a recently
discovered contemporary
manuscript copy from the
beginning of the 18th
century which was found
in the music library of
the Mariengymnasium in
Jever, this aria has now
been made available to
performers for the first
time in this new vocal
score edition. Previous
to this the corresponding
pages could only be seen
as a facsimile in an
article of the
“Göttinger
Händel-Beiträgeâ
. Now the aria can
be performed again.
Furthermore, with the
help of this new source,
missing measures in the
basso continuo which had
initially been completed
by the editor of the
“Halle Handel
Edition†volume,
could be reconstructed
from the basso continuo
part of the Bellante aria
“Ich brenne
zwar†(no. 71).
