The text
for the first voicing
(SSA) of this piece came
to me in the fall of 2020
while teaching at Crosby
High School in Crosby,
Texas. My students,
though enthusiastic to be
back in Choir, were
struggling to cope with
the civil unrest around
them, in addition to the
pandemic. When
considering how I could
help them navigate this
time, I realized that
they were in need of some
sort of consistency, of
feeling grounded in
themselves. As weÂ
focused on building of
community and
citizenship, this text
and tune came to mind,
each phrase highlighting
an element of personal
and community wellness.I

note:
Looking Up
is a piece for large
chorus and orchestra, and
is in three sections,
played without pause. In
the 16th century, a
variety of psalters in
meter were printed in
England, with the idea of
making psalm-singing
something that could
happen easily at home,
with the rhyming meter
being an aid to
memorization. These
translations are
wonderful exercises in
brevity and sometimes
clumsy rhymemaking, and
were usually prefaced by
a lengthy explanation as
to their merits; the
title of one of the first
such volumes in English
is: The Psalter of Dauid
newely translated into
Englysh metre in such
sort that it maye the
more decently, and wyth
more delyte of the mynde,
be reade and songe of al
men. I thought it would
be appropriate to set one
of these introductions,
and the first section of
Looking Up sets the
preface to Thomas
Ravenscroft's psalter
(1621), in which he
writes: “The
singing of Psalmes (assay
the Doctors) comforteth
the sorrowfull, pacifieth
the angry, strengtheneth
the weake, humbleth the
proud, gladdeth the
humble, stirres up the
slow, reconcileth
enemies, lifteth up the
heart to heavenly things,
and uniteth the Creature
to his
Creator.”
It
begins meditatively, but
eventually grows agitated
and fervent, with a
vision of the
“quire of Angels
and Saints”
“redoubling
anddescanting” - an
ecstatic and terrifying
vision of the skies
opening up. Ravenscroft
then encourages the use
of instrumental musicfor
worship, at which point,
a long, acrobatic
orchestral interlude with
jagged edges antagonizes
the choir, who sing a
kind of private, anxious
meditation on two
pitches.
One of
the most delicious
biblical texts is an
Apocryphal prayer known
as the Benedicite or the
Prayer of the Three
Children (the same who
were rescued by an angel
after King Nebuchadnezzar
tried to have them burnt
in an oven for not bowing
to his image). The text
is repetitive, obsessive,
and a gift to composers -
each line is an
invocation of an element
of the natural world,
followed by the phrase,
“blesse ye the
Lord, praise him &
magnify him for
ever.” In Looking
Up, the setting begins
with three solo voices,
and then grows to include
the whole choir,
itemizing the whole of
creation. The idea that
these boys are spared
from the furnace and then
five minutes later are
saying, “O ye the
fire and warming heate,
blesse ye the
Lord...” has always
felt very loaded to me,
and the orchestra plays
with this conflict
between joyful praise and
a more terrible (in the
16th-century sense)
awefor the
divine.
The text
for the third, and
shortest, section is
taken from Christopher
Smart's (1722-1771) A
Song to David,
purportedly written
during his confinement in
a mental asylum. This ode
to King David points out
how David, as the author
of some of the Psalms,
observes the whole world
from the
“clustering
spheres” to the
“nosegay in the
vale.&rdquo.

Antiphons tr. Charles
Thatcher, verses, The
Grail,
1963.
Entrance
Antiphons for the Church
Year contains thirty
antiphon texts from
the Graduale Simplex,
translated from Latin and
set to newly composed
music. The psalm verses
appointed for these
antiphons are taken from
the Grail translation
(1963). As with the
Responsorial Psalm of the
Mass, the assembly sings
the antiphon after its
intonation by the
cantor/choir, repeating
it after each verse of
the psalm. The number of
psalm verses which are
sung may vary according
to need. The singing of
the doxology, Glory to
the Father, while
recommended, is optional.
In several cases (e.g.,
Christmas and Easter),
the assembly sings a
refrain—a simple
acclamation in
Latin—and the
actual antiphon text is
sung by the cantor/choir.
The antiphon functions as
a first and final verse.
It is thought that
liturgical singing in the
early Church consisted in
part of such short
acclamatory phrases. Many
of the antiphons in this
collection are proper to
a specific Sunday,
solemnity, or feast. The
rest are seasonal in
nature and, like the
common Responsorial
Psalms of the Lectionary,
may be chosen according
to what seems best for
the occasion. The
antiphons of Christmas
Day and Easter Sunday
could be used at daily
Masses during their
octaves. Notations in the
scores of some antiphons
suggest alternate
occasions when they are
appropriate. Regarding
performance, these
compositions were
conceived with
flexibility in mind.
Assembly participation
and instrumental
accompaniment are
assumed. SATB choral
singing is effective, but
not necessary. Discrete
use of descants where
provided can lend an air
of festivity. Psalm
verses might be sung by
an entire choir, by a
small group or cantor, or
a combination of
both.

As
in all cantatas for St.
Michael the chorale
cantata Lord God, we
praise thee all of us BWV
130 from 1724 is a
magnificent composition.
Not only in the opening
chorus and the final
chorale do the three
trumpets and timpani play
a role, but the first
aria In hell the serpent,
hot with hate is even
accompanied solely by
trumpets, timpani and
continuo. The second
aria, Thou, of cherubim
the master, brings an
unexpected contrast in
which, besides the tenor
and continuo, on a solo
flute is heard. The
original set of parts
were separated from each
other in the 19th century
and today are scattered
throughout the world. For
the first time, some of
the parts were taken into
consideration in
preparing this edition.

about O Ewigkeit:We
step on the stage of
life, pull the curtains
wide open and venture a
glance at the eternal
course of the stars. A
powerful choral tutti
sounds, the key note of C
held on in the basses
emphasizes the
steadfastness of
eternity, and above this
is chromatic movement in
the upper voices which
produces friction. In
the following softer
central section, female
and male voices sing
separately. They sing in
characteristic Gregorian
style in vivid images of
the immeasurable sand in
the ocean, of tears and
trickles, of the great
beginning and the end of
the cosmos. The
verses from 1625 convey
an image of astonishment,
of seeking and not least
also of comfort. The text
functions as a framework,
as it is repeated in a
shortened form in the
last number of Sonne,
Mond und Sterne. It
encapsulates the many
life situations which are
sketched and sung about
in the staged cantata in
metaphysical
questions.

about Was ist die
Welt?A strict Allegro
ben ritmato symbolises
how inexorable the course
of the world is. The
choir chants the question
about what Welt (the
world) actually is.
Hectic bustle is
expressed through a
pulsing basic motif. This
is repeated constantly
and moves through the
parts. A lyrical B flat
minor in the central
section allows us to
float like shadows on the
way into a dream.The
song text is a collage.
The first verse, by the
Baroque poet Christian
Hoffmann von
Hoffmannswaldau, is
concerned with the
vanitas motif: the world,
and everything which
seems beautiful to us, is
ephemeral. The second and
third verses were written
in the 18th century by
Johann Gottfried Herder.
Here, the poet expounds
the view that real life
does not take place in
the world and that
people's mathematical
abilities are
insufficient to measure
space and
time.

Vincent
Novello was a British
composer and Organist who
gave the Novello
publishing company its
first embryonic form.
Here he arranges Rule,
Britannia! for Voice SATB
with Piano accompaniment
to introduce some
contrapuntal interest in
the verse.When 18th
century British composer
Thomas Arne included his
song Rule, Britannia! in
a masque based on the
life of Alfred the Great
that was presented at
Cliveden, the country
home of Frederick, Prince
of Wales, he could not
have imagined that more
than two hundred seventy
years later his ditty
would be known throughout
the British Isles and
beyond. Rule, Britannia!
is widely used in the
Royal Navy and British
Army and is featuredeach
year at the Last Night of
the Proms in the Royal
Albert Hall as a national
sing-along.At the time of
writing, the Dutch
actually 'ruled the
waves,' so this song was
more an exhortation than
a status report. The
lyrics were also a
statement of civil
liberty. Since Cromwell's
time, Britain had had a
standing army which could
be turned against the
native population. A
standing navy, however,
existed solely to protect
the nation from invaders,
protecting a free
populace.

The
Gloria in
Excelsis was written
by Sir Charles Villiers
Stanford for the
coronation of HM King
George V on 22 June 1911.
It was an occasion of
some note in the annals
of British music, for
Elgar's Coronation March
and Parry's grand
festival Te Deum
were also heard for the
first time that day. In
addition, there was music
by Thomas Tallis, Orlando
Gibbons and Sir John
Stainer, as well as by
the Master of the King's
Music and organist of St
George's Chapel, Windsor,
Sir Walter Parratt.
It was published the
following year as part of
Stanford's Opus 128, the
Festal Communion
Service for voices
and orchestra, which was
also made available with
the accompaniment
arranged by the composer
for organ. However, such
was the popularity of the
Gloria, a
magnificent and wholly
representative example of
Stanford's genius for
church music, that it
soon became popular as a
separate piece, either
with organ or orchestral
accompaniment, and it was
included in the orders of
service for the
coronations of HM King
George VI on 12 May 1937
and HM Queen Elizabeth II
on 2 June 1953.
Orchestral material is
available on hire (ref.
