The
“Missa brevis in E
flat minor†for
mixed choir a cappella
has been composed in the
tradition of the short
Mass (without Credo) and
can be easily managed by
most choirs. Thanks to
its conciseness, it is
suitable for use in
church services, while
its delightful harmonic
layout and consciously
simple melodies (with
clear allusions to folk
music) also make it
perfect for concert
performance.
â€
œMy music is my own and
I have never tried to be
original. That has always
been my motto and I have
only tried to use music
to express all the
feelings which life has
to offer. This has led
people to describe my
music as ‘so sad
that it sounds like birds
who have lost their
wings’ but also as
‘the happiest
classical music that we
have ever
heard‘. My
compositions are almost
all sacred. They express
not only my own faith but
also my appreciation and
respect for the timeless
texts that have been used
for centuries and
centuries.“

This
familiar Christmas carol
is given an ethereal
setting by Brian L.
Hanson. Supported by a
gentle, lilting
accompaniment, the
strains of 'Still, Still,
Still' interweave in both
the accompaniment and
choral parts. Soaring
vocal lines, rich
harmonies, and
imaginative text painting
point to the wonder and
mystery of Christmas.

It is a
small music history
sensation: Thanks to Yves
Grard an unknown and
unpublished manuscript
penned by Camille
Saint-Saëns has been
unearthed in the
Mdiathèque Jean Renoir
in Dieppe in
France.
It is the
top four instrumental
parts which make this
manuscript something of a
sensation. Placed under
each other are
â??Saxophone Soprano en
Si bâ?, â??Saxophone
Alto en Mi bâ?,
â??Saxophone Tnor en Si
bâ? and â??Saxophone
Baryton en Mi bâ?,
strings, soprano solo
with chorus and organ.
Musical history has
hitherto credited
Jean-Baptiste Singele
(1812â??1875) with
having written the first
saxophone quartet, his
opus 53, which he
completed in 1857. Now
this historiography
clearly has to be
revised. The date 1854
has been found under the
first page of the
treasure from Dieppe,
which is pasted over and
also sewn, meaning that
Saint-Saënsâ?? work
was written three years
earlier than that of
Singele.
In
contrast to Singele,
Saint-Saëns does not
have the wind instruments
taking solo parts but
rather uses their tonal
colour to depict textual
moods and nuances. On the
one hand the saxophones
accompany the choral
parts (certainly singable
by amateurs) and support
the human voices in fugal
passages. On the other
hand, they take the
melody in the purely
orchestral
passages.
Saint-Sa
ëns wrote the motet in
the period when he had
taken up his first
permanent appointment as
organist at the Church of
Saint-Merri in Paris. He
revised the work several
times over the decades,
changing the motifs at
the beginning, correcting
obvious mistakes,
reworking the ending,
eventually changing the
instrumentation several
times and even â??
probably in the final
stage â?? replacing the
Latin text with an
English one. Today,
three-and-a-half versions
have been handed down,
one of them stopping
after just a few pages.
The compositional steps
have been successfully
reconstructed by means of
detailed detective work.
Furthermore, the first
saxophone version (BA
11305) and the last
English piano version (BA
11309) have been edited
to produce a
scholarly-critical
edition.
The
present edition of the
English version for
soprano solo, choir and
piano (BA 11309) serves
both as a full score and
as a vocal score due to
the
instrumentation.

Program
note:
Looking Up
is a piece for large
chorus and orchestra, and
is in three sections,
played without pause. In
the 16th century, a
variety of psalters in
meter were printed in
England, with the idea of
making psalm-singing
something that could
happen easily at home,
with the rhyming meter
being an aid to
memorization. These
translations are
wonderful exercises in
brevity and sometimes
clumsy rhymemaking, and
were usually prefaced by
a lengthy explanation as
to their merits; the
title of one of the first
such volumes in English
is: The Psalter of Dauid
newely translated into
Englysh metre in such
sort that it maye the
more decently, and wyth
more delyte of the mynde,
be reade and songe of al
men. I thought it would
be appropriate to set one
of these introductions,
and the first section of
Looking Up sets the
preface to Thomas
Ravenscroft's psalter
(1621), in which he
writes: “The
singing of Psalmes (assay
the Doctors) comforteth
the sorrowfull, pacifieth
the angry, strengtheneth
the weake, humbleth the
proud, gladdeth the
humble, stirres up the
slow, reconcileth
enemies, lifteth up the
heart to heavenly things,
and uniteth the Creature
to his
Creator.”
It
begins meditatively, but
eventually grows agitated
and fervent, with a
vision of the
“quire of Angels
and Saints”
“redoubling
anddescanting” - an
ecstatic and terrifying
vision of the skies
opening up. Ravenscroft
then encourages the use
of instrumental musicfor
worship, at which point,
a long, acrobatic
orchestral interlude with
jagged edges antagonizes
the choir, who sing a
kind of private, anxious
meditation on two
pitches.
One of
the most delicious
biblical texts is an
Apocryphal prayer known
as the Benedicite or the
Prayer of the Three
Children (the same who
were rescued by an angel
after King Nebuchadnezzar
tried to have them burnt
in an oven for not bowing
to his image). The text
is repetitive, obsessive,
and a gift to composers -
each line is an
invocation of an element
of the natural world,
followed by the phrase,
“blesse ye the
Lord, praise him &
magnify him for
ever.” In Looking
Up, the setting begins
with three solo voices,
and then grows to include
the whole choir,
itemizing the whole of
creation. The idea that
these boys are spared
from the furnace and then
five minutes later are
saying, “O ye the
fire and warming heate,
blesse ye the
Lord...” has always
felt very loaded to me,
and the orchestra plays
with this conflict
between joyful praise and
a more terrible (in the
16th-century sense)
awefor the
divine.
The text
for the third, and
shortest, section is
taken from Christopher
Smart's (1722-1771) A
Song to David,
purportedly written
during his confinement in
a mental asylum. This ode
to King David points out
how David, as the author
of some of the Psalms,
observes the whole world
from the
“clustering
spheres” to the
“nosegay in the
vale.&rdquo.

The
Ceremony of Carols is
one of Britten's
best-known and
most-performed works. It
is a brilliantly
conceived and dramatic
concert work which sees
the voices process to
their places singing
unaccompanied plainsong
and, at the end,
processing out again to
the same chant. These
movements can also be
accompanied but strictly
only if the voices do not
process. The final
Alleluia can be repeated
as many times as
necessary to get the
singers to and from their
destination.The carols
are for three-part
children's voices
(though, of course they
can be sung by female
adults as well) and they
form a two-part work
around a central
Interlude for harp which
is based on the plainsong
from the Procession.
Variety is the key word
here as all the carols
have such individual
identities. The
forthright Wolcum Yole!,
the deliciously lyrical
There is no Rose, the
swinging Balulalow, the
fiery and dramatic This
little Babe all
contribute to a work
which is a feast of
discovery throughout.
Lovely solos and duos add
further colour and the
harp part, an inspired
choice of accompaniment,
enriches, colours and
surrounds the voices with
its pictorial musical
imagery. If anything
shows Britten's genius
for writing for voices it
must be this
work.
The
challenges here are in
creating a real equality
between voice parts,
fielding a confident pair
of soloists, and making
the most of the
wonderfully colourful
poems Britten has chosen
to set. Pronunciation is
not really an issue, but
when I recorded this work
with the Finzi Singers I
decided to follow the
example of Sacred and
Profane and use authentic
medieval pronunciation
for which an expert coach
was necessary. It brings
an added element of
colour to a familiar
aural
experience.

This
cycle of carols, to the
poetry of Christina
Rossetti, was assembled
piecemeal over a number
of years, gradually
acquiring a larger
dramatic and harmonic
arch shape as new
settings were added. I
was particularly
attracted to Rossetti's
conflation of the dark,
fallow winter landscape
with that of the soul
waiting for salvation.
The cycle traces the long
nights of watchfulness
before Christmas, with
the great event
constantly deferred, only
glimpsed periodically in
different visions before
the music turns inward
again to contemplation.
The opening carol
embodies this spirit,
with passages of diffuse,
roving harmony
interspersed with
meditative, lyrical
pedals, calling out the
night watch and dreaming
of a far-off summer of
the spirit. Earth Grown
Old is a kind of double
carol, setting two
complete poems, their
lines at first presented
separately as a still,
expectant chorale and a
jubilant dance, then
progressively interwoven
toward a fervent climax
before once again
receding into quiet. In
the bleak mid-winter,
which sets a highly
compressed version of
Rossetti's original poem,
presents an enfeebled
landscape frozen in time,
in dire need of
deliverance. A gentle
melody weaves its way
through static drones,
broken by an angels'
chorus announcing the joy
to come. Love Came Down
at Christmas ends the
waiting, with its gently
falling, overlapping
lines building to a final
revelation, the mystery
of Christmas at last made
real.

The
hymntune
â??Hyfrydolâ? is
placed with the texts for
â??Come, Thou
Long-Expected Jesusâ?
and â??Love Divine, All
Loves Excellingâ? in
this lovely arrangement.
The setting is
delightfully refreshing,
flowing like a madrigal.
The vocal lines are
lyrical and melodic and
work together
effortlessly. This piece
is especially appropriate
for Advent, but will
serve well for worship
and concerts at any time
of the year.
