Musical
theater fans will be all
ears for this barn-burner
from Broadway's Shucked.
It's a truncated version
of the a-maize-ing
opening number. Sing
about the world's most
useful crop in a
hilarious three-minute
arrangement that hits all
the highlights of the
corny crowd-pleaser.
Kicks off with a
theatrical duet, breaks
into a bouncy two-beat,
includes a kernel of a
kickline, plus some full
gospel sangin' at the
end---wow!

In
1724, Bach composed the
cantata Herr, wie du
willt, so schicks mit mir
[Lord, as you will, do
unto me] BWV 73 for the
third Epiphany Sunday.
Like in some other
cantatas from the first
annual cycle, the opening
movement contains a part
for corno which would in
fact have been unplayable
on an instrument of that
era - probably also a
reason why Bach allocated
this part to the organ in
a repeat performance
(both variants can be
performed using the Carus
edition). The unusual
choral movement,
interrupted by
recitatives, is based
quite substantially on a
short four-note motive
which is introduced by
the horn; at the end of
the chorus, the choir
sings it to the words
Herr, wie du willt [Lord,
as you will] - an avowal
which also quite
substantially
characterizes other
movements of the cantata.

Here is a fresh
setting that deserves to
be placed among the
classic interpretations
of this George Herbert
poem. As is typical of
Peter Pindar Stearns'
style, this work contains
many soaring, lyrical
phrases for all the voice
parts. Each verse is
treated with further
intensification of the
harmonies and the voices
expand to fill out the
emotion of the words such
a joy as none can move.
This anthem will require
a sensitive performance
to obtain the many
subtleties within the
parts here.
