The 'Hallelujah' Chorus, arguably the most famous choral work of the western classical tradition, is the closing number of the second part of Handel's Messiah. Such is the strength of Handel's word setting that this empathic, triumphal paean retains its appeal in spite of the cultural overexposure and controversy to which it has been subjected, remaining a firm favourite with choirs. The premiere of Messiah was in Dublin in 1742 as the high point of a full season of Handel's work. It was a charity event, held in aid of local causes, and in order to get the maximum attendance at Neale's new music hall in Fishamble Street, men were asked to remove their swords, and ladies the hoops in their dresses. The tradition of standing during performances of the 'Hallelujah' Chorus, still indulged at some performances in Britains, is said to have been started by King George II at the work's opening run in London in 1743. / SATB Et Orgue

Paul Mealor's setting of the Latin hymn, Ubi Caritas , was composed for the Marriage of His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales, K.G. to Miss Catherine Middleton and first performed by the Choirs of Westminster Abbey and Her Majesty's Chapel Royal, St James's Palace, conducted by James O'Donnell, at the wedding service at Westminster Abbey on Friday, 29th April 2011. 'My new piece, Ubi Caritas for the Royal Wedding, takes its text from the sixth century Christian hymn that was normally sung at the service for the washing of the feet on Maundy Thursday. The words, originally in Latin, mean: 'Where charity and love are, God is there. Let us come together in God's love and let us love each other with a sincere heart.' Composer David Brunner has a gift for setting texts in melodic phrases with gentle contours and with a lyrical style. He has done exactly that with this text by Victorian age poet and essayist Bessie Rayner Parkes. Parkes was a prominent English feminist and campaigner for women's rights who found music everywhere - in birds, flowers, winds and waves - but mostly in earnest human voices raised in charity and for the cause of truth.
