With its
tonal language of
subjective avowal, the
first of Beethoven's two
masses opens up new
worlds of expression for
the liturgical texts of
the Mass which are
expressly modern and
point towards the future.
Not to be considered a
preliminary work to the
Missa solemnis, it is an
entirely independent work
which set standards for
the further development
of settings of the Mass
in the 19th century. Its
newness, of which the
composer himself was

A
New World is a
musical story across five
movements with texts by
authors from Cicero and
Ovid to George William
Russel; from nursery
rhymes to war
poets.
The music
and texts link to form a
narrative that questions
what sort of ?New Worlds?
have come into existence,
or could be created in
our future, and considers
how we balance human
traits of fear,
displacement, isolation
and conflict with equally
human traits of love,
hope, forgiveness and
unity.
1. On
History
An
opening movement for SATB
choir, piano and timpani
(with solos for soprano,
tenor and alto). A calm
opening leads to a
dramatic conclusion with
text by Cicero and Ovid
in praise and recognition
of their
homeland.

It's
true that most pastoral
musicians never face the
challenge of choosing
music for the Rite of
Dedication of a Church.
For those who do, this
can be a
once-in-a-lifetime event!
Specific music is
required and the assembly
must be educated and
prepared for this blessed
occasion. In David
Kauffman's collection
Bless This Church, the
same melodic line graces
each of the six different
texts (each in English
and in Spanish) used for
the rites of dedication.
The repetitive,
wonderfully singable tune
serves the assembly well,
making it easy for the
congregation to fully
participate in this
unique event. Use all six
pieces or just one.
Assembly reprint boxes in
Spanish and in English
are included in the music
collection. Each and
every parish dedicating a
new space needs to
consider this practical
and inspired collection!

This
gospel-styled anthem
offers a unique
perspective by placing
Joseph at the center of
the lyric. A pleasant
change from the usual
Christmas repertoire, the
ministry of Joseph's
faithfulness permeates
the message while the
music is approachable and
endearing. The dialogue
between choir and soloist
lends an exciting
element, adding one more
reason to consider this
attractive choral
offering.

The present
volume contains the
Psalmi Davidis
Poenitentiales, seven
penitential psalms that
had already been
supplemented with the
motet Laudate Dominum de
coelis in the first
edition (1584). In the
Complete Edition,
however, the compilation
is preceded by the vocal
piece S u Su p e r per
Super (1567), which
experiments with
syllables. Though
reprinted many times, it
was assigned to various
genres according to its
place of publication:
while the piece was
considered as a motet in
Germany, in France it was
classified as a chanson
and in Italy as a
madrigal a unique case in
the reception history of
vocal music in the 16th
century. To this day we
still do not know the
significance of the vocal
text Super flumina
Babylonis, which
gradually evolves out of
syllables. Perhaps Lasso
wanted to depict a
biblical scene that
evokes the gradual
learning of a
language.
This piece
is a polite adaptation by
famed Scottish poet,
Robert Burns, of a
traditional bawdy song of
the same name. This more
charming version presents
a poignant and emotive
consideration of human
relationships and aging.
Arranged sensitively for
a cappella mixed voices
by Michael Weber of North
Dakota State University,
one feels the lament and
the Scottish countryside.
Medium in difficulty, for
high school, community
and college choirs.

the highly modern,

The chorale settings draw
on influences from

Praetorius wrote for a

Italian style and the
Protestant chorale
combine and form a
symbiosis which showed
the way forward for the
history of German music.
The chorale settings draw
on influences from
Venetian polychoral
music, use ritornelli and
employ obbligato
instruments in a way
which is beyond compare,
even in contemporary
Italy. Here we see a
quite different side of
the master from the
composer of Es ist ein
Ros entsprungen. And
above all, Praetorius
always remains a
practical musician who
ensures that these
breathtaking chorale
concerti can also be
effectively performed
with smaller forces,
sometimes considerably
reduced ones. In the
chorale setting Wie schon
leuchtet der Morgenstern
Praetorius wrote for a
five-part ensemble which
is joined in some
sections by a four-part
capella. For the
ensemble, Praetorius
suggested both voices and
instruments, which he
uses in a sophisticated
texture of sound, the
instruments sometimes
duplicating the voices
and sometimes alternating
with them. Score

This Christmas
cantata was conceived
with two main ideas: to
provide a new cantata
that was accessible to
most choirs, and to
provide a major work that
would have wide appeal to
choirs and congregations.
Tidings of Great Joy uses
brief melodic quotes from
familiar carols
interwoven with new
material (text and music)
to tell the story of
Christmas in a fresh way.
There is considerable
variety in the
instrumentation and vocal
work, providing for
several soloists, women's
chorus, men's chorus and
an octet. Even though it
is quite acceptable to
perform this work with
organ only, the use of
instruments adds greatly
to the overall effect and
success of the piece.
