Though appropriate in purpose to any occasion where a communal meal is shared with a sense of thankfulness, the words, relating to God's gifts in all kinds and degrees, make it equally suitable as an introit before a service such as Evensong. The cantata ' Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis ” dates from around 1713 and was probably performed for the first time that year in the Liebfrauenkirche in Halle . Its assigning to the third Sunday after Trinity probably only occurred the following year. With its large-scale structure and strong emphasis on biblical texts, it was extremely popular in the 19th century and remains one of Bach's best-known cantatas today. Telemann's Passion oratorio 'Der Tod Jesu? was composed in 1754/55, almost at the same time as the same-named work of note by Carl Heinrich Graun.
