The
cantata Es ist euch gut,
dass ich hingehe [It is
well that I go forth] BWV
108 for Cantate Sunday is
one of the cantatas
composed on texts by the
Leipzig poetess
Christiane Mariane von
Ziegler with which Bach
concluded his second
annual cycle of cantatas
after he had abandoned
the annual cycle of
chorale cantatas at
Easter 1725. The text
contains two sayings by
Jesus which are taken
directly from the Sunday
gospel reading (John
16:5-15). The quotation
opening the cantata was
set by Bach as a bass
aria with solo oboe
d'amore; it breathes
tranquility and
assurance. The second
quotation, however, is
set as an extended choral
fugue in three sections;
it forms the center of
the cantata. The free
text surrounding the
biblical quotations is
divided into two arias in
which the emphasis is on
melodic lines; there is
only one single
recitative, the original
text of which was
substantially abridged by
Bach. A four-part chorale
concludes the cantata.

Advent, Christmas;
occasions: Feasts of the
Blessed Virgin Mary,
Hymns in praise of the
Virgin Mary, Daily
hours.
The two
Magnificat settings (C
major, ZWV 107; D major,
ZWV 108) are amongst well
over 30 psalm and
Magnificat settings by
Zelenka for Vespers
services in Dresden. In
contrast to the work in C
major, where a soprano
solo dominates over long
passages, the choir has a
more prominent part in
this Magnificat in D
major. Zelenka also
heightened the festive
character of the work by
later adding parts for 2
trumpets and timpani.
Authentic performances of
the work are therefore
possible with and without
trumpets. Score available

Both of the
Kyrie settings in E flat
major K. 322 (1778/79)
and C major K. 323
(probably not prior to
1790) belong to those
works by Mozart which
were only handed down as
incomplete draft scores.
However, in both cases
Mozart's original drafts
were so extensive and
well advanced that Abbe
Maximilian Stadler,
Mozart's friend and known
from the history
associated with the
Requiem, could complete
both settings. In 1830,
for the first edition of
the Kyrie K. 323 Stadler
employed the text of the
Marian Antiphon for
Easter Regina coeli
laetare for the vocal
parts. The Carus edition
presents both the
original text (Kyrie), as
well as the text from the
first edition (Regina

may be performed in the
Mass or in the context of

The
cantata Ihr werdet weinen
und heulen [You will weep
and wail] BWV 103 for
Jubilate Sunday is one of
the cantatas composed on
texts by the Leipzig
poetess Christiane
Mariane von Ziegler with
which Bach concluded his
second annual cycle of
cantatas after he had
abandoned the annual
cycle of chorale cantatas
at Easter 1725. A
large-scale choral
movement on Jesus's words
quoted from the Sunday
gospel reading opens the
cantata; the choir is
interrupted by a bass
arioso - the vox Christi.
Both arias are introduced
by a recitative with
arioso conclusion; in
each, exquisite solo
instruments are deployed:
flauto piccolo in the
contralto aria and
trumpet in the tenor
aria. Score and part

The
two-part cantata from
Bach's third cycle of
cantatas was performed
for the first time on 4
August 1726 (the 7th
Sunday after Trinity).
The large-scale opening
chorus for full forces to
a text from Psalm 104
shows in its formal
diversity Bach at the
height of his powers. The
second part of the
cantata begins with a
biblical text (Matthew 6,
31 ff.), not as a choral
movement here, but as an
extended bass arioso (Vox
Christi). A meditative
soprano aria with solo
oboe forms the high point
of the second part. Bach
re-used the opening
chorus, both the arias
and even the bass arioso
later in the G minor Mass
BWV 235. Score and part
