In 1752 he was appointed
music director of the
city of Magedburg. The
cantata Siehe Finsternis
bedeckt das Erdreich und
Dunkel der Volker was
written for the feast of
Christmas. We do not know
the year of its first
performance. The libretto
is by Johann Samuel
Patzke. The cantata

Bengt Pohjanen / from the
Ordinary Mass. For
soprano, bass, mixed
chorus and orchestra.
Lyrics from the death
mass and by Bengt
Pohjanen in English
translation by John
Hearne.
Fredrik
Sixten: When my dear
friend Patrik Runeke
became seriously ill and
died - only 37 years old
- feelings and thoughts
concering life and death
overwhelmed me. It was
natural for me to turn to
Bengt Pohjanen, with whom
I had collaborated
earlier, to ask him to
formulate: * words of
anger and of gratitude *
words of guilt and of
forgiveness * words of
consolation, of love and
hope.These words of
Bengt's, in combination
with the classical texts
from the Latin Requiem
Mass, form a kind of
testament to mankind's
yearning for unity and
perfection. In the final
movement, In Paradisum,
this yearning is borne
forth to the God whom
Bengt describes as being:
Wisdom deep and
loving. Stronger than
death. Order a

Latin. The Missa
Sancti Henrici is a work
of Biber's later years.
It is one of his largest
and most mature pieces of
church music. With the
skillful alternation of
the stile antico and the
stile moderno, as well as
the contrast between Solo
and Tutti, Biber attained
a structure within the
individual movements rich
in variety. In its
original architectural
conception, Salzburg
Cathedral had four
galleries, each with its
own organ, on the piers
supporting the dome at
the crossing. This
conception created the
spatial prerequisite for
double- and polychoral
performance tradition on
the Venetian model.
Biber's magnificent

t Dominus (Ps 109), a
psalm setting for double
choir, is one of
Vivaldi's most
significant sacred works.
In it, he takes up the
old Venetian polychoral
tradition, combining its
compositional techniques
with those of the
instrumental concerto,
the cantata and the
opera. The broadly
conceived cycle of
movements, consisting of
eight psalm verses and
the doxology, is
characterized by an
expansive arch of
tonalities connecting the
two framing outer
movements in D major
(these are also
thematically related):
Dixit Dominus and Gloria

Latin/English. Dixi
t Dominus (Ps 109), a
psalm setting for double
choir, is one of
Vivaldi's most
significant sacred works.
In it, he takes up the
old Venetian polychoral
tradition, combining its
compositional techniques
with those of the
instrumental concerto,
the cantata and the
opera. The broadly
conceived cycle of
movements, consisting of
eight psalm verses and
the doxology, is
characterized by an
expansive arch of
tonalities connecting the
two framing outer
movements in D major
(these are also
thematically related):
Dixit Dominus and Gloria
Patri. The contrasting
and varied inner
movements are perfect
examples of Vivaldi's
skill in vividly
portraying linguistic
figures in music. Score

Latin. Haydn's
Missa Sancti Joannis
Nepomuceni, dated 21 May
1772, is dedicated to the
Bohemian martyr and
patron Saint of bridges,
Johannes Nepomuk (ca.
1340-1393, canonized in
1729). Despite the
addition of woodwinds and
brass to the three-part
string section, the Mass
is in a comparatively
simple, compact form as
was expressly required by
Count Hieronymus
Colloredo, Haydn's second
employer in Salzburg.
Even in the final
sections of the Gloria
and Credo Haydn forgoes
not only vocal
virtuosity, but also the
polyphonic artifices
which traditionally
characterize these
passages in the Mass.
Like the Missa Sancti
Amandi (1776), the
Nepomuk Mass does not
employ vocal soloists.
