Par REGER MAX. Die Drei Chören (The Three Choirs) op. 6 are hardly mentioned in the young Reger's correspondence. The only meaningful reference is Reger's announcement to his London publisher George Augener on August 1, 1892: 'I will send the choruses op. 6 ? which your son liked very much ? to you tomorrow morning [...]'. George Augener had spent five weeks from undergoing treatment in Wiesbaden and had met on this occasion not only Hugo Riemann but also his 'favorite pupil' Reger. After the publication, the Allgemeine Musik-Zeitung remarked on the 'entirely Brahmsian character to the work'. It praised its polyphonic structure and its'romantic chiaroscuro [...], the effect of which the accompanying piano knows how to exalt excellently'. It takes 75 minutes to relate the story of the Passion according to the Latin of St John's Gospel; Pärt uses solo singers for the roles of Pilate and Christ, and a group of four soloists (soprano, counter tenor, tenor and bass) for the Evangelist, together with a small chorus. Understatement is all: the instrumental accompaniment is confined to a quartet of woodwind and strings that underpins the Evangelist quartet, and an organ to support the remaining singers. Each distinct group has its own scraps of melodic material, which are constantly varied and repeated. Everything proceeds in rhythmic unison, so that the effect js ritualistic and highly austere. Edmund Jolliffe 's setting of the communion antiphon for the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass may be sung to equally powerful effect either liturgically, or as the focus of a collective expression of remembrance, or as a moving addition to any choral concert programme. From the opening revelation of eternal light the music moves steadily through hushed litanies and invocations to a resounding climax. A contemporary tonality of richly annotated chords illuminates these traditional words with a modern sound and sense.
