Edmund Jolliffe 's setting of the communion antiphon for the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass may be sung to equally powerful effect either liturgically, or as the focus of a collective expression of remembrance, or as a moving addition to any choral concert programme. From the opening revelation of eternal light the music moves steadily through hushed litanies and invocations to a resounding climax. A contemporary tonality of richly annotated chords illuminates these traditional words with a modern sound and sense. Par WILLIAMS RODERICK. A gently flowing 3-minute arrangement by Roderick Williams for SATB (with divisi) with piano accompaniment that captures the beauty of this famous traditional Hebridean love song. The song text uses both old dialect and English, each verse ending with the words, 'Sad am I without thee'. Commissioned by The Sixteen choir and recorded on their 2021 album ‘Goodnight Beloved'. Roderick Williams is a composer/arranger and also a world-renowned baritone. Par HOWELLS HERBERT. Before me, careless lying is a fine example of the contrapuntal art of Herbert Howells (1892–1983), inspired by the work of the great English composers of the Renaissance period, those of the madrigal school in particular, but in its passionate sensibility essentially twentieth century. The composer wrote this partsong on Christmas Day 1918, and dedicated it to his friend the organist Dr R. R. Terry, Director of Music at Westminster Cathedral, and chairman of the Tudor Church Music committee. The words are by the poet and biographer Austin Dobson, whose Collected Poems was published in 1897. Perhaps as a token of the composer’s regard for Terry’s pioneering work infurthering the appreciation and understanding of sixteenth-century church music, Before me, careless lying was originally published with the alto and tenor parts notated in traditional clefs. It is here reissued with clefs in modern forms of treble and transposed treble respectively, and with a keyboard transcription of the vocal parts which is intended for use in rehearsal./ Feuillet / SATB

Will Todd, born in 1970, is forging a strong reputation for himself as a composer who is equally at ease in opera, oratorio, church music and jazz. His style is instantly accessible and lastingly memorable. He spent his formative years steeped in both jazz and the English choral tradition so in his choral music he is able to juxtapose strong rhythmic drive and rich harmonies with exquisitely lyrical vocal lines. 'The Christ-child' is an example of Todd's writing at its most beautiful. Setting words by G.K. Par CORP RONALD. Both as composer and conductor, Ronald Corp is steeped in the English choral tradition, and in A Spotless Rose he has traversed by his own path the hallowed ground of words immortalised by Herbert Howells. Corp’s own music, chordal yet contrapuntal, and likewise redolent in its modality of a distant past ‘of ancient seers’ foreshowing’, flows smoothly in flexible rhythm, each voice a shapely strophic melody. Mindful of the famous close of Howells’s setting, Corp concludes with an exquisite ending all of his own.
