Origi
nal anthem This Hal
Hopson classic is
appropriate for services
where love is the theme
and is especially useful
for weddings. The
familiar words are a
paraphrase of 1
Corinthians 13 and the
haunting tune is based on
the traditional English
melody, O WALY WALY. The
String Quartet setting
can be for strings only
or used as an
accompaniment for the
choral settings or the
vocal solo, but not for
the TTBB version which is
in the Key of C. String
Parts come in the two
keys, A & G, and include
parts for Violin 1 & 2,

One song
can spark a moment, one
breath can wake the
dream. This introspective
original is based on an
unattributed poem that
illustrates the impact a
small moment can have in
our lives. Traditional
homophonic writing soon
expands to a bevy of
swirling choral textures
and a dreamy chorus that
floats the central motive
over a wave of vocal
layers. It's a remarkable
contemporary a cappella
effect and a fitting
treatment for these words
of worth.

Chora
l literature played a
major role in Adolphus
Hailstork’s early
inspirations, as he grew
up singing in choirs.
While in college, he
created this beautifully
plaintive madrigal,
setting the words of
Orlando Gibbons’
familiar “The
Silver Swan.†The
result is a strikingly
powerful new setting, a
perfect partner to the
iconic work from the
Renaissance, and an early
glimpse of
Hailstork’s
magnificent career filled
with choral and vocal
music. THE SILVER SWAN is
in a traditional tonal
language and scored for a
cappella S.A.T.B. chorus
without divisi, making it
easily within reach of
choirs of all levels.

Nick
Strimple has composed a
set of three easy
anthems, and lacking in
difficulty is absolutely
true. But elegant and
distinguished also
describes these settings
of familiar texts. The
words by 19th century
English poet John Bowring
is the least known text,
but it is timeless and
speaks of God's enduring
love. The organ
accompaniment contains
scrumptious suspensions
and resolutions for an
anthem that works equally
well as a choral piece, a
solo, or for unison
choir.

Alexandre
Desplat delivers a lovely
a cappella lullaby that
may be programmed at any

sincere, traditional

singers through a warm
progression of sonorities

expressive word stress.
While plenty of soft

ABA form grows to a
glorious forte at the

Here is
something truly different
- Brent Wells' new
arrangement of the
Chinese folk song Ao bao
Xiang Hui, “Let Us
Meet at the Aobao.â€
The arrangement begins
with a brief choral
introduction, where the
Erhu (violin) presents
the melody of the folk
song, complete with
traditional
ornamentation. The tenor
and bass verse recounts
the story of a young man
who goes to the aobao,
only to find that his
true love is not there.
The sopranos and altos
answer, giving voice to
her reassuring words:
“If you wait
patiently, I will run to
your side.â€
Finally, they find one
another - and under the
clear moonlit sky, sing
together. Your singers
will enjoy the challenge
of a different language,
presented in the setting
of a charming love story.
High school, college, and
festival choirs will
savor learning and
performing this unusual
piece.

free-tonality,

According to the

The
outcome of a fruitful
collaboration of
theologians, writers and
musicians working at the
retreat and therapeutic
centre of Holy Rood House
in Yorkshire, this new
collection articulates
the needs of a
contemporary ministry of
healing through the
agency of hymns, the
church's most resonant
and expressive form of
worship.
Acknowledging the impact
of medical science in
vastly expanding the
range of the possible in
every aspect of our
living and dying,
eighty-three texts tackle
a rich diversity of
themes: infant death,
illness and suffering,
ageing and dementia, the
genome, mortality and
bereavement, grief and
lament, pain and despair
- including pain and
despair from the failure
of healing - but also
wisdom and resilience,
healing as part of a
spiritual holism of mind
and body, and as a
metaphor for social and
political justice and
care for the environment.
The wealth of music
includes new tunes and
familiar ones, and the
anthology concludes with
a section of twelve short
or repetitive texts to be
used in conjunction with
prayer.
Hymns of Hope and
Healing is the
product of many voices,
from those of widely
experienced authors to
others taking their
promising early steps in
the form. It will provide
a vehicle for worship and
reflection for those
involved in chaplaincy,
in therapies and
counselling, and all in
the wider church with an
interest in this ancient
ministry. Witnessed
through the life, death
and resurrection of
Christ, it is refreshed
and re-imagined here for
a time both of
breathtaking scientific
advance, and of an urgent
need to affirm our
wholeness and faith while
embracing the momentous
challenges to our
traditional understanding
of health and
healing.

Huro
n Carol ('Twas the Moon
of Wintertime) is perhaps
the oldest Canadian song.
It was written ca. 1642
by Jean de Brebeuf, a
Jesuit missionary at
Sainte-Marie among the
Hurons. The original
words were in Huron
language, but Whittall
uses the English
translation from 1926.
The song's melody is
based on a traditional
French folk song Une
Jeune Pucelle. Whittall's
arrangement is done for
Audite choir in 2013. It
is a skillful
arrangement, bringing out
the best qualities of the
original melody.

Text language:

Mezzalira
places his worked
entirely in the tradition
of Catholic church music:
Gregorian elements are
associated likewise with
Palestrina's counterpoint
and Bruckner's sonorous
expansin. Thoroughly in
the tradition of the
motet, the Memorare is
structured in four
sections, each in
accordance with their
respective texts. This
large structured
composition begins in C
minor from the depths of
the men's voices,
building to a song of
lamentation which
increases to an
harmonically enriched E
flat major passage on the
words virgo maria. In the
second section,
harmonically in A flat
major, Mezzalira places
the upper and lower
voices in a double choir
opposed to each other in
block-like manner in
order to develop
resonating cantilenas in
the third part, which is
in F major. After a very
simple, tender four-part
setting of a hymn the
composition ends with an
Amen with large modally
enriched chords in D
major.

Comp
osed for the
internationally regarded
Choir of New College,
Oxford, and its conductor
Edward Higginbottom,
Rhian Samuel's What
Cheer? is a bright
and uplifting new setting
of words already familiar
to singers from popular
carols by William Walton
and Peter Warlock. The
scoring is for SATB choir
and organ, with optional
short solos for soprano,
alto and bass.
An eminent and
established song
composer, Samuel has
brought to this text,
originally from a
16th-century commonplace
book compiled by Richard
Hill, her own idiomatic
response to the tradition
of music for Christmas.
Though written for one of
the world's great vocal
ensembles, What
Cheer? is well
within the range of
accomplished amateur
choirs, and the effective
scoring for voices
captures in ringing
choral sounds the buoyant
optimism of this poetic
celebration of Christ's
birth.

The
'Hallelujah' Chorus,
arguably the most famous
choral work of the
western classical
tradition, is the closing
number of the second part
of Handel's
Messiah.
Such is the strength of
Handel's word setting
that this empathic,
triumphal paean retains
its appeal in spite of
the cultural overexposure
and controversy to which
it has been subjected,
remaining a firm
favourite with
choirs.
The
premiere of
Messiah was in
Dublin in 1742 as the
high point of a full
season of Handel's work.
It was a charity event,
held in aid of local
causes, and in order to
get the maximum
attendance at Neale's new
music hall in Fishamble
Street, men were asked to
removetheir swords, and
ladies the hoops in their
dresses.
The
tradition of standing
during performances of
the 'Hallelujah' Chorus,
still indulged at some
performances in Britains,
is said to have been
started by King George II
at the work's opening run
in London in 1743.

Both
as composer and
conductor, Ronald Corp is
steeped in the English
choral tradition, and in
A Spotless Rose he has
traversed by his own path
the hallowed ground of
words immortalised by
Herbert Howells. Corp's
own music, chordal yet
contrapuntal, and
likewise redolent in its
modality of a distant
past 'of ancient seers'
foreshowing', flows
smoothly in flexible
rhythm, each voice a
shapely strophic melody.
Mindful of the famous
close of Howells's
setting, Corp concludes
with an exquisite ending
all of his own. A
