This Fantasia is founded on the following traditional English carols: The Truth Sent From Above (Herefordshire) words and tune; Come All You Worthy Gentlemen (Somerset) words and tune; On Christmas Night (Sussex) words and tune; There Is A Fountain (Herefordshire) tune only; together with fragments of other well-known carol tunes. The work is scored for ordinary full Orchestra with Organ and set of bells (ad lib. ), or String Orchestra with Organ or Piano. Alternatively, it may be accompanied by Organ or Piano alone, played from the Vocal score, with an optional solo Cello part (H212). A chorus part for performance bysolo Baritone and TTBB is also available (W41). The chorus is required to sing in four different ways: 1. Singing the words. 2. Singing with closed lips. 3. Singing 'Ah'. 4. Singing with half-closed lips i. e. with a short 'u' sound as in the word 'but'. Par HOFMANN LEOPOLD. 'Man that is born of woman hath but a short time to live' is one of the central biblical texts dealing with the transitoriness of human existence. Leopold Hofmann, Kapellmeister at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna from 1772 to 1793, where W. A. Mozart was his church music assistant, also set this strongly expressive text. Hofmann's setting, in C minor, offers an austere harmony, characterized by suspensions in a homophonic, through-composed four-part vocal setting (soloists or SATB choir), reinforced only by two trombones and organ continuo. Four concise instrumental transitional passages between the individual verses relieve the pathos laden Viennese church style of this composition. With its tragic air, in some passages it closely resembles Mozart's Requiem K. 626. For this first edition, the two trombone parts are available both in the original clef and in alto clef. The figured bass has been realized so that the piece can also be performed without trombones, with only organ accompaniment. Felix Mendelssohn can claim the credit of having ushered in the Bach-Renaissance with his arrangement and performance of the ?St Matthew Passion?. It was revived for the first time in the Berlin Singakademie on 11 March 1829, one hundred years after its premiere in Leipzig?s Thomaskirche. A second arrangement was performed in Leipzig in 1841. Originally only available on hire as part of the edition published by Bärenreiter in 2009, this vocal score is now available on sale. It enables both the Berlin and the later Leipzig versions to be performed.
