For the
moving moment in the Good
Friday liturgy, when the
priest symbolically
washes the feet of
several people thereby
recalling the thoughtful,
loving gesture of Christ
at the Last Supper, the
Christian church provides
a specially intimate,
conciliatory text in the
antiphon Ubi caritas.
Matsushita's composition
sets this text quite
simply to reflect this
moment in a beautiful
motet, which is both
charming and grateful to
sing. In an entirely
tonal setting in F major,
with chromatic accents
sparingly employed, he
uses elements from
organum and pedal points
to create tonally
atmospheric expanses
contrasting with the
syllabic setting which
runs throughout. In his
writing he uses unisons,
thirds and contrary
motion, spanning
quasi-Gregorian melodies.
Matsushita sets the three
verses of the hymn
usually set nowadays, and
these also divide the
composition. Each verse
is introduced with the
ascending pentatonic
motif Ubi caritas, but
the melody is transformed
according to the text and
expresses the
immeasurable joy of the
glory of God in the third
verse in a brief forte
outburst with leaps of a
fifth, before the
composition concludes
with a final Ubi caritas
and an Amen lost in
reverie. voice range: S:

As
in all cantatas for St.
Michael the chorale
cantata Lord God, we
praise thee all of us BWV
130 from 1724 is a
magnificent composition.
Not only in the opening
chorus and the final
chorale do the three
trumpets and timpani play
a role, but the first
aria In hell the serpent,
hot with hate is even
accompanied solely by
trumpets, timpani and
continuo. The second
aria, Thou, of cherubim
the master, brings an
unexpected contrast in
which, besides the tenor
and continuo, on a solo
flute is heard. The
original set of parts
were separated from each
other in the 19th century
and today are scattered
throughout the world. For
the first time, some of
the parts were taken into
consideration in
preparing this edition.

This

Verleih uns Frieden

Lubeckisches Gesangbuch
of 1703 included both
hymns, with a verse by
Johann Walter added, to
the melody Erhalt uns

Esp

from the pen of the just

cantata The Lord careth
for us BWV 196 has its
charm, and through its

The cantata was composed

the libretto contains no
freely written poetry,
rather is drawn solely

Mezzalira
places his worked
entirely in the tradition
of Catholic church music:
Gregorian elements are
associated likewise with
Palestrina's counterpoint
and Bruckner's sonorous
expansin. Thoroughly in
the tradition of the
motet, the Memorare is
structured in four
sections, each in
accordance with their
respective texts. This
large structured
composition begins in C
minor from the depths of
the men's voices,
building to a song of
lamentation which
increases to an
harmonically enriched E
flat major passage on the
words virgo maria. In the
second section,
harmonically in A flat
major, Mezzalira places
the upper and lower
voices in a double choir
opposed to each other in
block-like manner in
order to develop
resonating cantilenas in
the third part, which is
in F major. After a very
simple, tender four-part
setting of a hymn the
composition ends with an
Amen with large modally
enriched chords in D
major.

As a
singing teacher, choir
director and not least as
a passionate professional
choir singer, Irina
Rebhuna is perfectly
familiar with the
possibilities of the
human voice. And so it is
hardly surprising that
the Latvian musician born
in 1988 has devoted
herself especially to the
composition of vocal
music. Her sacred choral
work Libera me, Domine
for mixed a cappella
choir (SSAATTBB) won the
special prize for the
'best composition for 4-6
voices' at the
International Composition
Competition 'Musica Sacra
Nova' 2016. This church
music gem, in which the
eponymous Gregorian
chorale is intonated by
one of the (two) bass
baritone sections at the
beginning - over a
musical tapestry woven by
the remaining voices -
and taken up again by all
tenors at the end, is
ideal for ambitious
amateur choirs. The idea
behind this work, says
the composer, is 'the
human reflection on the
uncertain - on death, on
Judgment Day or on what
is inexplicable to us.
Such as humility,
excitement, fear,and
atonement. The chant ends
without ending, there is
no solution. Life goes on
because we ask the
following question again
and again: What will
happen next?'.

The
history of the
composition of the
oratorio is odd: the
kernel of this three-part
work were the movements
from the middle section,
the Flight to Egypt,
which Berlioz composed on
a whim in 1850 and which
he passed off as the work
of a baroque composer
whose existence he
himself had invented. In
1854 the triptych, which
was completed with the
parts entitled The dream
of Herodes and The
arrival at Sais, had its
celebrated first
performance. Starting
from the Gospel of St.
Matthew, with the visit
of the astrologer to
Herodes and the flight of
the Holy Family to Egypt,
Berlioz chose to relate
the story of the events
of Christmas from another
angle. This skillful
dramatisation, with
impressive instrumental
sections, such as the
independent trio for two
flutes and harp as well
as the effective choruses
with local color, make
this sacred trilogy a
grateful enrichment of
the repertoire for
Christmas music. Score
and parts available

Felix
Mendelssohn Bartholdy
completed his first
oratorio - St. Paul , op.
36 - in 1836, at the age
of
twenty-seven.
The
first version, which was
premiered on 22 May 1836,
was then extensively
revised by the composer.
This second version,
which at the same time
served as the basis for
the published version,
was premiered as early as
October that year in
Birmingham . The acclaim
with which the oratorio
was received was
exceptional. Within
eighteen months of
completing the score,
Mendelssohn was able to
list fifty performances
of the work. Robert
Schumann praised the work
effusively and even
Richard Wagner, who later
denigrated Mendelssohn,
was full of admiration.
Today, St. Paul belongs
to the core repertoire of
sacred choral
music.
This Urtext
edition of the oratorio,
edited by the
internationally-recognise
d Mendelssohn scholar
Michael Cooper is based
on all critical sources.
As well as the principal
version of the work, the
score also includes for
the first time numbers
which were composed for
the first version and
subsequently removed.
This gives not only an
insight into the history
of the composition of the
work, but also, with the
complete performing
material, into the
performance of the
original version. The
appendices (first
version) which appear in
the full score and vocal
score are not contained
in this choral
score.
The full
score and vocal score
include the German and
English texts of the
oratorio.
The
vocal score is by
Mendelssohn.
