University in remembrance
of a lost friend and
fellow Cadet, this
thought-provoking piece
is designed to be a
conversation starter
about mental illness,
depression, grief, and
suicide. Harmonically
rich, musically
expressive, and
emotionally stirring,
singers will be changed
and encouraged. What if I
could tell you no one has
to walk alone?

Sara Teasdale/Kevin
Memley.
Several
superb settings of this
moving poem by Sara
Teasdale precede this
one, but Kevin Memley has
earned the reputation to
take us somewhere new,
even with classic texts.
Premiered at the ACDA
Western Convention, this
SSAA setting with piano
is entirely new and
gratifying. Always
melodic and harmonically
fulfilling, this new
setting works best for
advanced high school,
college and community
treble choirs.

This Jazz
standard by Thelonious
Monk is melodically and
harmonically
sophisticated and
interesting. It has been
covered by more artists
that can be counted and
on every instrument,
every band-big and small
and singers and singing
ensembles. The options
are seemingly endless.
Here, Ed gives us another
worthy arrangement for
the jazz, show or concert
choir.

Magnificat by
Magdalena Zimmermann for
mixed choir (SSAATTBB)
plays with harmony,
rhythm and dynamics. The
unexpected continuation
of melodies by the
voices, combined with
shifted rhythms, engages
the audience's attention
until the last bar and
results in a rich sound.
With its soft and gentle
ending, Magnificat as a
prayer of Mary exudes, at
the same time, a sense of
calmness and
gentleness.The work is
rhythmically and
harmonically demanding,
which is why the singers
need to be steady keeping
beat and intonation. Once
Magnificat has been
rehearsed, it is suitable
for concerts as well as
Sunday services.

The a
cappella motet Alleluja
(2018) is a song of
longing which resonates
existential need as well
as the hope of a profound
connection to God. In the
beginning, which is
delicate and motivically
very concentrated but
metrically deliberately
uncoordinated, more and
more voices gather to
sing together, until
suddenly, starting from
the bass, a violent and
rhythmically exalted
incantation breaks out.
The following fortissimo
unison in a high register
is the climax of the
entire work piece. In the
Abgesang, the beginning
is taken up, but now in a
polyphonic and
harmonically intensified
setting. The end in A
major seems like a
salvation. The work has
been released on the CD
Rejoice. Vocal Music by
Kay Johannsen (Carus
83.496/00).
