1. Oh, the
Beautiful Treasure; 2. We
Will Walk with Mother and
Mourn; 3. Hop Up and Jump
Up. Explore the American
heritage of Shaker
hymnody with these three
settings of lesser-known,
very appealing Shaker
spirituals. Each brief
setting grows from its
underlying melody to make
an exceptionally unified
arrangement. With a
different technique as
the focus for each
arrangement, these
minute-long pieces make
fine vocalises for your
choir. Oh the beautiful
treasure, with its square
rhythms, horn calls, and
harmonic texture opening
out and closing, is
excellent for teaching
chord tuning. We will
walk with Mother and
mourn, with its smooth,
stepwise, rising and
falling melody, is a fine
exercise for legato
singing. Hop up and jump
up, with its crisp
rhythms and phrase
fragments tossed from
part to part, calls for
rhythmic clarity and
clean entrances and
cutoffs. SSAA a cappella;

Comm
issioned by the BBC as
part of the celebrations
for International Women's
Day, and reflecting its
theme of hope, Like a
Singing Bird was
premiered live on Radio 3
on 8 March 2015 by Sarah
Connolly and the St
Catharine's Girls' Choir,
conducted by Edward
Wickham. The distinctive
vocal scoring features a
small solo group of
sopranos or
mezzo-sopranos drawn from
the upper-voice ensemble.
The anthem is the first
of three which are
collectively entitled
Echoes from Willow
Wood, the second
also being available in
Choral Now. The text,
Christina Rossetti's poem
'A Birthday', features in
Virginia Woolf's classic
essay A Room of One's
Own, based on
lectures delivered at
Newnham College and at
Randle's own Cambridge
alma mater, Girton, an
institution at the
forefront of women's
education for two
centuries. Inspired by
the clock in Girton's
Stanley Library, the
'chiming rhythms' which
are a driving force
within the piece offer a
further level of
connection. The music
moves from quiet
anticipation to bright
affirmation, the sense of
something life-changing
heralded by an Advent
plainchant quoted in the
second half. The final
couplet is set apart in a
hushed recitative,
reflecting, in the
composer's words, 'the
hope I and other young
female composers can have
as we try to make our
mark in what has
traditionally been a male
domain.'.

Words by Pablo
Neruda.
Textured
choral writing glides
effortlessly over a
graceful piano
accompaniment in this
elegant setting of the
romantic text by Chilean
poet and Nobel
Prize-winner Pablo
Neruda. Variations in
tempo and contrasts in
dynamics guide singers to
a nuanced performance of
a fully developed form,
creating a complete
musical story. The purity
of Spanish vowels invites
beautiful choral singing
(phonetic and IPA
pronunciation guide
included). Exquisite.

The poem by
Yeats that serves as the
text for this Ron Kean
piece has been set by
many fine composers.
Ron's approach is unique,
bringing in overtones
through whirlies to add
an ultra-spiritual
dimension to the impact
of the work. Ron's vocal
writing is always
careful, pulling lines
into one another with
suspended results.
Singers simply love to
sing them because
everyone is equally
important. Selected for
the Iris Levine Treble
Chorus Series, this piece
fits any general program
for advanced treble high
school, college and
community choir.

Silen
t night: This arrangement
of the traditional carol
by Franz Gruber and
Joseph Muhr (translated
into English by John
Freeman Young) was
written by Anna Lapwood
and the Pembroke College
GirlsÂ? Choir for their
end of term party for the
families of the
choristers. The aim was
to produce an arrangement
manageable for the
youngest choristers
whilst stretching the
older ones with some
slightly jazzy harmonies.
It was written in one
75-minute rehearsal, and
performed to the parents
straight after. The choir
has written a new pieceat
the end of every term
since. Gaudete: This
arrangement of the
16th-century carol was
written during a full
weekend of group
composition with Anna
Lapwood and the Pembroke
College Girls' Choir, a
process with which they
had experimented
previously. The choir
decided to create
rhythmic impetus and
drive, which is delivered
from the outset in the
introductory material.
This figure is repeated
under the refrain for the
first three verses, while
the verses themselves are
presented in simple
unison. The final verse
is harmonised and
crescendos towards the
uplifting key change for
the final refrain, giving
a sense of climax, which
may be highlighted
further with an optional
tambourine.

Viva la bella Dori (Long
live fair Dori). This
late sixteenth-century
collection of madrigals
enjoyed great success and
was the model of the
famous English collection
of madrigals entitled,
The Triumphes of Oriana.
The GIA Historical Music
Series edited by Dennis
Shrock, presents
repertoire suitable for
performance by public
school, college and
university, church, and
community ensembles, with
the purpose of making
available to
today’s conductors
lesser-known and
previously
difficult-to-procure
historical masterpieces.
The music, drawn from the
Renaissance through the
Romantic eras, is in
performance editions
based on the most current
and rigorous scholarly
research. The musical
scores reflect original
intent of notation, with
all editorial markings
and emendations clearly
identified as such. In
addition, preface
material accompanying the
music contains literal
translations of foreign
language texts and
information regarding the
lives of the composers,
genres, and relevant
performance practices.
Dennis Shrock is Director
of Choral Activities at
Texas Christian
University. He has been
called one of the top
choral scholars in the
United States and has
received a number of
awards for his work. He
received a bachelor's
degree in music education
from Westminster Choir
College and both master's
and doctoral degrees in
choral conducting from
Indiana
University. .
