Five choral songs. Par SCHONHERR CHRISTOPH. Since his earliest childhood, Christoph Schönherr has been fascinated by all things nautical. His cycle Von Schiffen, Meer und Wind (Of Ships, Sea and Wind) brings together verses by different poets that explore the sea in its various guises. The work's selected poems describe the vast ocean that can fill us with a deep sense of tranquility, but can also bring mortal danger with its storms and destructive waves. Boats, and especially sailing ships, are often associated with freedom, a sense of weightlessness, and security. But if we are caught in a storm at sea, we suddenly find ourselves at the mercy of nature. We are made painfully aware of our own insignificance in the greater scheme of things.According to the composer and passionate sailor: ?In the five choral songs I attempt to characterize the atmosphere of the texts and the emotions they contain. Let all the world in every corner sing was commissioned by Colston's Girls' School in Bristol for the Chamber Choir and their Director of Music Matthew Redman, and was written in August 2008 for the service to mark the school's acquisition of Academy status. It is a tour-de-force for upper voices - the organ introduction leads to a tapestry of rich variety, climaxing with the choir splitting into four parts for the antiphonal cries against the full organ. The music is highly rhythmic throughout, its time changes dictated by the rhythm and stress of the text. / Choeur SSAA Et Orgue

Milton describes the universe halting in utter stillness at the moment of Christ?s appearing on the earth. (As the poet wrote: ?His reign of peace upon the Earth began. ?) In James McCarthy?s carol, the voices play a dual role, as narrator, and by evoking the atmosphere of a singular moment of frozen time. In this arrangement of Faure's Requiem for soloists, female choir and organ, the tenor and bass parts are distributed among the altos which has necessitated some judicious adaptations in the part-writing. The second soprano replicates the original alto part largely unchanged, while the original baritone solo now resounds in the alto. The organ arrangement takes all three versions of the Requiem into consideration but primarily follows the second version of 1893 in terms of the rhythmic presentation of the instrumental parts.
