Münden,
Gerd-Peter.
Year
after year, during Advent
and the Christmas season,
compositions are sought
which present well-known
carols in a new light,
whether it be
compositions set for
small or larger groups,
for children or adults,
with or without
accompanying keyboard
instruments. This
collection by Gerd-Peter
Münden presents carols
in new settings as a
welcome addition to the
Christmas literature and
will enrich the
repertoire of an
adultsâ?? or
childrenâ??s
choir.
The
Editor Gerd-Peter
Münden is one of the
most creative German
church-musicians today.
From 1992 to 1999 he
worked as the cantor in
Minden, where he also
directed the music school
for choristers. From 1999
he has been the
Cathedral-Cantor at the
Braunschweig Cathedral
and the director of the
cathedral school for
choristers. He is the
initiator and artistic
director of a successful
school project throughout
Germany encouraging
youngsters to sing.

In his
Christmas motet Hodie
Christus natus est Schutz
employs the full mastery
of his madrigalian
musical language and
exploits all the sonorous
richness which the six
part scoring offers him.
The choral groups
alternate in singing the
greeting of peace pax to
each other, the alleluia
scales continue playfully
and with sophistication,
continually crossing. A
work which is well-suited
to church and chamber
choirs, and will be a joy
to sing at Christmas
time.Separate

For
SATB voices with a
soloist (to which voices
add gradually,) the text
is as if someone is
speaking to their
long-dead ancestors. They
granted a gift of life
and hope for those who
came after. Their
â??names and faiths
survive.â? And just as
those in the past were
faced with decisions and
made them for the benefit
of those who follow, we
now have the same
responsibility. The music
is mostly in unison and
remains on one staff even
when it divides into
multiple parts (which it
does in only 14 of the 89
measures). This is a
singable piece with an
easy but supportive piano
part, which could be
useful for many ensembles
in many situations.

In 1648
Heinrich Schütz
published a collection of
29 motets with five to
seven parts titled
â??Geistliche
Chor-Musicâ? (Sacred
Choir Music). Here, the
term â??Chorâ?
(choir) refers not only
to a (large) vocal
ensemble but, more
generally, to a group of
musicians, vocal or
instrumental. As
explained by Schütz in
the foreword he published
with the collection, all
parts of the motets can
be performed vocally
and/or
instrumentally.
