Classical Music for Children' wants to introduce clarinet pupils to the beauty of Baroque, Classical and Romantic concert literature. Une matière sonore qui circule sans cesse au sein de l'orchestre, des échos multiples qui jaillissent de toutes parts, une recherche de textures sonores aux couleurs les plus diverses : c'est avant tout ce qui caractérise ce concerto, poème symphonique concertant qui se déploie d'un seul tenant bien que structuré en trois mouvements. Le premier s'ouvre sur des espaces sonores aux couleurs sombres et inquiétantes d'où émerge la clarinette avant de se diffuser en échos multiples dans les bois de l'orchestre. Entre ces éléments de flux et de reflux scandés par de denses accords répétés, la clarinette impose progressivement des mélismes aux contours néo-baroques avant que ne s'engage une partie plus motorique en crescendo constant conduite par un martèlement obsédant de motifs staccatissimo. Après une lente transition où le discours s'apaise, le second mouvement débute par une longue mélodie descendante de clarinette ponctuée par un accompagnement chromatique lentement égrainé au piano. Cette mélodie semble dialoguer avec son double dans un enchevêtrement de lignes contrapontiques comme si l'on regardait au loin se déployer des polyphonies de la Renaissance.
