This
brand-new series is
intended as a guide to
the keyboard music of the
16th to 19th centuries
for pupils of the piano
and the harpsichord, as
well as of other early
keyboard instruments.
Each volume contains
pieces by well-known and
lesser-known composers
from one country or
region. The main purpose
of the series is to
extend the repertoire and
stylistic knowledge of
both pianists and
harpsichordists while
also presenting fine
pieces and typical genres
based on original
sources. Our edition
retains the performance
indications of the
composers' manuscripts
and contemporary
editions. Each volume
includes:- suggestions
for stylistically
appropriate performance
bothon the piano and on
period instruments-
suggested elaborated
versions of some pieces
and excerpts- a fold-out
list of ornamentation
signs and the composers'
own tables of
ornamentation signs-
biographies of the
composers and the sources
of the pieces-
translations of
foreign-language
performance indications.
The two volumes devoted
to French keyboard music
includes close to 50
showy and relatively easy
works - preludes, dances,
suites, rondeaux, and
character pieces - from
the early 16th until the
late 18th century
(ordered
chronologically).This
publication is printed on
high-quality,
age-resistant paper that
is produced in an
environmentally-friendly,
climate-neutral manner
using renewable raw
materials.
Una nuova collana
ideata per offrire una
guida alla scoperta della
musica per pianoforte e
clavicembalo dal
sedicesimo al
diciannovesimo secolo.
Ogni volume include brani
di compositori di una
specifica nazione o area
geografica. L'intento
è amplicare la
conoscenza e il
repertorio di ogni
musicista. Inoltre in
ogni edizione sono
riportati fedelmente i
suggerimenti per
l'interpretazione e le
indicazioni presenti sui
manoscritti originali. I
due volumi dedicati alla
musica francese includono
circa 50 brani
significativi - preludi,
danze, suites, rondò e
altri - che risalgono
all'inizio del sedicesimo
secolo fino alla fine del
diciottesimo secolo,
rigorosamente inordine
cronologico.

Eric
Ewazen’s THREE
INVENTIONS were inspired
by Bach’s Two-part
Inventions, yet they
sound thoroughly like
Ewazen. Composed for
harpsichord (with a piano
adaptation following
later), Ewazen’s
inventions maintain a
pure “one note per
hand†texture until
their final chord, with
strong-but-free imitative
counterpoint between the
two voices. While Ewazen
may be best known for his
wind music, he is a
pianist himself, and
composers’ works
for their own instrument
are a direct insight into
how they write for their
own performances. The
piano adaptation of THREE
INVENTIONS is also
available as a separate
publication. THREE
INVENTIONS was written
for my dear friend Maria
Rojas, who premiered the
work on a faculty recital
at Juilliard. Maria is
both a pianist and a
harpsichordist, and I
first met her when she
gave a demonstration of
the harpsichord for the
students in my theory
classes.I’ve
always been captivated by
Bach’s series of
Two-Part and Three-Part
Inventions. With the
Two-Part Inventions,
I’m amazed how
Bach could create such
wonderful intricacy and
counterpoint with only
two voices. I
consequently modeled my
inventions after the
counterpoint of Bach,
involving the traditional
contrapuntal devices he
used: imitation,
development, harmonic and
modal shifts,
fragmentation, and
sequence, essentially
creating a dialog between
two completely equal
voices conversing with
each other!Bach wrote 15
Two-Part Inventions (as
well as 15 Three-Part
Inventions, not to
mention the 48 preludes
and fugues in The
Well-Tempered Clavier!),
and that’s just
the start of his
voluminous repertoire for
the keyboard! I was happy
just to write
three!!!Each of my
inventions has a
distinctive mood. The
first is in a relaxed,
yet cheerful C Major
tonality (as a nod to
Bach’s Invention
No. 1 in C Major); the
second is heartfelt and
lyrical; and the third
invention (involving a
Gigue rhythm in the
compound meter of 12/8)
is energetic, and full of
life and spontaneity. The
third is primarily in a
minor tonality, resulting
in a feeling of drama,
bringing the THREE
INVENTIONS to an exciting
finale.

The
title of Esa
Pietilä’s solo
harpsichord work Fata
morgana (2019) refers to
a special weather
con-dition, which creates
illusory effect of
mirage-like fairy
castle-like monuments in
the horizon of the sea.
The piece brings forth
the frightening bass
sonority on double
manual, full size
harpsichord and the
brightness on the treble
and makes a dialogue out
of them. “I got
fasci-nated by the
sonority, character and
power of the low register
sound on the instrument,
es-pecially when used in
non-traditional way and
found some kind of
especially delightful and
outlandish cluster-mud
and airy glimmering
things which seem to play
together, the com-poser
describes. The challenges
of the piece lie in
rhythmical ideas, which
are surprisingly
multi-faceted and in the
short, improvised
section.

The first
volume of Couperin's
Harpsichord Pieces does
not contain a date of
publication, however, it
is thought to have been
composed during
1716-1717, due to the
address which the
composer gave on his
other Harpsichord
compositions. Yet, the
compilation remains a
favourite. Francois
Couperin (1668-1733) is
often nicknamed 'Couperin
the Great' to distinguish
him from other members of
the musical family. Many
of the composer's works
have picturesque titles.
Examples of this in his
first volume of Pieces
for Harpsichord include,
Les Papillons (The
Butterflies),
L'Enchanteresse (The
Enchanting) and Les
Plaisirs de Saint Germain
en Laye (The Pleasures of
Saint Germain en Laye).
Couperin's moods are
expressed through choices
of keys, adventurous
harmonies and discords.
With a significant amount
of variation and
inspiration, Pieces for
Harpsichord is essential
to the repertoire of
aspiring players of the
instrument..

“Bein
g an unusual composer of
his day, Ibert did not
attach himself to any of
the predominant genres of
music of the time.
Described as elicit, the
composer's Deux
Interludes for Flute,
Violin and Harpsichord is
pleasantly unusual in
instrumentation, creating
a worthy addition to the
classical music
repertoire. Ibert stands
out as a composer who
tackled all styles with
equal success, his Deux
Interludes for Flute,
Violin and Harpsichord
being no exception. With
clear, separate parts,
this edition is a must
buy for aspiring
musicians seeking to
expand their
repertoire.â€.
