Score + Parties. Par BEETHOVEN LUDWIG VAN. Beethoven wrote his Horn Sonata op. 17 for Johann Wenzel, one of the most famous horn players of his day. According to an anecdote from Beethoven's pupil Ferdinand Ries, he only completed it on the day before the première. Nevertheless, the piece was a rousing success. As the horn part demands a masterly technique, the publisher of the first print, Tranquillo Mollo et Comp., issued the piece in 1801 with an alternative part for violoncello. Since the autograph score has not survived, Jonathan Del Mar has based his scholarly-critical edition mainly on this first print. The Dane Carl Nielsen was one of the most original composers at the turn of the 20th century. Based on the German Romantic tradition he developed his own musical language, especially in his symphonies that are still played very frequently. He also, however, often turned to chamber music settings. Canto serioso was originally written as an audition piece for the Copenhagen Opera Orchestra, where the position of low horn player was to be filled. Thus Nielsen's fairly short work makes the most of the low register and the instrument's sonorous mid-range. A welcome addition to the late Romantic repertoire for horn! / Cor Et Piano

The music, especially in the first movement, is reminiscent of Beethoven and Schumann, with a touch of the late Romantic style.
