The title refers to a Moroccan desert wind, but it was less a figurative association than merely the sound of the word that fascinated Johannes Boris Borowski. The lengthy one-movement work reveals the formal skills and the imagination of the composer born in 1979: A rhythmized melodic cell evolves into a construct with its very own structure, motivic-thematic work leads to two-dimensional sounds and eventually returns to the sparseness of the beginning. Chergui was commissioned by the state of Berlin and premiered at the festival Ultraschall in January 2013. The performance with the Ensemble Interface under the direction of Scott Voyles has been recorded and released on CD by Wergo. / Ensemble

Par TURNAGE MARK-ANTHONY. This work was commissioned by Ensemble Modern. It was composed in 2003 and first performed on 26 March 2004 at Alte Oper, Frankfurt, Germany by Ensemble Modern, conducted by Oliver Knussen.
The UK edition of The Guardian wrote ' Crying Out Loud is a 15-minute musical tantrum based on hiccupping rhythmic figures that seemingly pay homage to Louis Andriessen, before developing into a more familiar argument in which Bartók and Miles Davis tussle for supremacy.'

The unusual 4/4 meter setting with artfully crafted re-harmonizations and lush counterpoint gives each listener cause to reflect on the importance and meaning of this melody to patriotic Americans everywhere. The starting point was the collected letters of Vincent van Gogh. In spite of the tragedies for which van Gogh is best known, his letters are filled with joyous exuberance for the practical considerations of his work: what he will paint next and, most importantly, what colours he will use. For Julian Anderson, it seems the painter relishes 'the sheer stuff of which his art is made'. In Van Gogh Blue, Anderson relishes the sheer stuff of which his own art is made. It's a very physical, highly contrasted work about the joy of sound. Instrumental colour plays a large role, and Anderson's use of two mobile clarinetists allows extra colour as their sound moves through the acoustic space of the hall. / Ensemble

Cette oeuvre en trois mouvements reflète le caractère de la wunderkammer, ou le Cabinet des Curiosités, qui a prospéré entre le 16ème au 18ème siècle: 'dans ce paysage labyrinthique, j'ai trouvé un cadre naturel pour construire ma propre collection privée d'objets musicaux, des chiffres, et des citations . Les textures volatiles et virtuose du travail sont créés en exigeant l'agilité soliste de chaque interprète. Tout en étant nécessaire pour s'intégrer parfaitement ensemble pour former des surfaces complexes musicaux les musiciens sont également définir les rôles belliqueux stridents et dramatique. La forme du concerto (Kammerkonzert) s'est révélée une arène naturelle pour ces tensions contradictoires qui cherchent résolution par la métamorphose.(Kenneth Hesketh) / Ensemble
