The numerous,
mostly religious works of
the Bohemian composer
Andreas Hammerschmidt are
composed with great
craftmanship, and sound
full and catchy. They
were composed for 17th
century village churches,
in which they were sung
by the
congregation—and
they are still familiar
and popular today. Robert
van Beringen took the
advent hymn Lift Up
Your Heads, Ye Gates
and created this
beautiful arrangement.

Durkle
Bandrydge is the name of
the composers imaginary
world, but it could very
well be anyones invisible
dream world with a
different name. In this
very versatile suite by
Bruce Fraser, 8
characters are featured,
each with its
ownpeculiarities, making
Durkle Bandrydge such a
colourful place. Do these
characters differ that
much from us? That is for
you to find out! In the
last part, all characters
come together in a
special
way.
Durkle
Bandrydge exists at the
end ofyour street. It is
invisible to humans, but
Durkle Bandrygators can
watch us with great
interest. The music
will introduce you to
some of the characters
who live in this unusual
place.
The
parts: Somnanbulyss,
who is a giant
trollguarding the
entrance to Durkle
Bandryde. At least, he is
supposed to, but he tends
to sleep most of the
time. His music is
therefore very slow
moving and
sleepy.
Long
Gwysteen is a tall,
mysterious, and somehow
sophisticated
character,who walls
around with a shell on
his back. His music
glides along rather
gracefully.
Squelfitch is a rather
unpleasant and smelly
character who lives in a
bog, which is why his
music sounds rather slimy
and a bit like trying to
walkthrough
quicksand.
Perfydlia is a meddling
old woman, who gossips
about everybody and
squeals with sudden
delight at the small
exciting bits of
tittletattle about others
in the village. In the
music you can hear her
sudden little squealsof
delight.
Maryann
Lovely is a beautiful
young lady, graceful,
gorgeous, absolutely
devine, and her music is
obviously just the
same.
Thistledoo
Nicely is a lively
character who spends and
spends and spends with
her credit card,buying
the latest fashion and
never worries about
having to pay the bills.
Her music reflects her
excitement when shopping
and het ‘happy go
lucky’ approach to
life.
Marsyn
Edginton is the Lord of
the manor, the richest
man in town, the‘big
cheese’, the man with
all the power and, of
course, the biggest
house. He is very grand
and his music like he
could be a king.
Jimmy McScotsmyn is a red
haired scotsman wearing
tartan cap. He misses his
home country terribly and
eatslots of shortbread,
oatcakes, scotch eggs,
porridge and drinks an
enormous amount of Scotch
Wisky, which helps him to
have fond memories of the
kind of music he would
like to dance to when he
was a younger man. His
favourite dance is a Jig
andthis is the music he
remembers.

in a grand parade -it is

The composition
the Lonesome Knight was
based on a fairytale. The
piece was written by
Saskia Apon for the
National Brass Band
Championships
2001.
Once upon a
time there was a knight
who went to fight and
defeat the dragon that
had beenkilling the
people of his town.
There is a short but
intense battle between
the two and the knight is
triumphant. However
whilst persuing the
dragon the knight has
travelled far away from
his home and now is lost.
He roames around trying
to findhis way home, but
exhausted and weary he
falls to the ground. He
awakens startled by a
Giant and a group of
Goblins who are
celebrating the death of
the dragon. The
knight joins in the
festivities but after a
long evening is once more
leftalone. The sun
rises the following
morning and he sees a
castle on the horizon. He
enthousiastcally ventures
towards the castle in the
hope of meeting other
people. However he
becomes greatly
disillusioned when there
is none to be found.
Inhis desperation the
knight climbs the tower
ready to jump off.
Suddenly he hears a
heavenly voice. Right
before him is the most
beautiful princess he has
ever seen. She graciously
thanks him for killing
the dragon, a spark
ingnites between themand
they build a life
together and.... live
happily ever
after!
Saskia
Apon studied harp at
Rotterdam School of
music. With this
instrument she rounded of
her studies by passing
with credit, however it
was her love of
composition thatremained
her focus.
Self-taught, she began
composing at the age of
nine. Since then she has
written pieces for The
Dutch Brass Quintet, The
Dutch Brass Ensemble, The
Rotterdam Trombone
Quartet and the brass
band quintet Brass
Ability. Atpresent
she is the in-house
arranger for The
Rotterdam Philarmonic
Brass Ensemble.
Besides the customary
attention for the real
splashworks she
endeavours to add value
to the melodic function
of the brass wind
instruments in her music.
Hercompositions and
arrangements can be found
on many diverse Cds.The

‘Circus
Delight’ is a five-part
suite which is set, how
could it be otherwise, in
a big circus
tent.
The suite
starts with a part called
‘Entrance’. The
orchestra, positioned
above the entrance of the
ring asks for the
attention of the audience
and then the ring
announcer enters. The
show can begin! The
elephants play a central

‘Circus
Delight’ is a five-part
suite which is set, how
could it be otherwise, in
a big circus
tent.
The suite
starts with a part called
‘Entrance’. The
orchestra, positioned
above the entrance of the
ring asks for the
attention of the audience
and then the ring
announcer enters. The
show can begin! The
elephants play a central
role in the first act.

Games were essential for
keeping the citizens of
ancient Rome in check.
While the bread was
meant for the poorest
among the Romans, the
Games were Popular
Pastime Number One for
everybody. There were
different kinds of games,
such as chariot races
(especially popular with
female spectators), or
wild-beast fights, where
lions, tigers, bulls or
bears were set on one
another or even on human
beings. Most popular,
however, were the
Gladiator fights.
In ‘Bread and Games’
William Vean depicts one
of the many fights in the
antique Colosseum. 1.
Entrance of the
Gladiators: By powerful
bugle-calls the attention
of the peoplewas asked
for, after which the
Gladiators entered the
Arena at the sound of
heroic
marching-music. 2.Swor
dfight: We can hear that
the fights were not mere
child’s play in this
part.On the contrary,
they were a matter of
life and death and were
fought
accordingly. 3.Mercy
of the Emperor: Sometimes
a wounded gladiator could
be fortunate, depending
on the mercy of the
audience. Waving one’s
handkerchief meant mercy,
a turned-down thumb meant
no pardon. The Emperor
had the right to take the
final decision, but he
usually complied with the
wish of the majority of
the public. 4.Lap of
Honour: Gladiators were
mainly selected among
slaves, convicted
criminals, or prisoners
of war. Consequently,
winning was very
important, as it would
mean fame, honour and
sometimes even wealth. A
lap of honour, therefore,
was the winner’s due
reward.

speziell für eine hoch
motivierte
Bläserklasse
komponiert und kann
deshalb in jeder
denkbaren Spielstärke
(optional mit Klavier)
gespielt werden. Der
erste Satz strahlt
Spielfreude in einem
kraftvollen Rhythmus im
1/2-Takt aus. Der zweite
Satz ist eine Art Pavane,
in welcher einen Moment
lang Nostalgie
widerklingt. Der dritte

Finale in einem
ansprechenden Funk-Beat.

was discovered by
Christopher Columbus, who
used it as private
property until 1509.
After some skirmishes it
fell under British rule
and the sugar trade on
the island flourished.
After the abolition
of slavery in 1834 it was
only granted Home Rule in
1944, but it remained a
member of the British
Commonwealth of Nations.
Whereas the
export of cane sugar used
to be Jamaica’s main
export product for many
years, nowadays music has
taken over this role. At
first American music used
to be very popular on the
island. Later, however,
Jamaican musicians
started to experiment and
thus in the end created
their ownmusical style
called Reggae.
Well-known Reggae
musicians are Bob Marley
and Peter Tosh.
The most important
instruments used in
Reggae are the bass and
the drums. Together they
form the base for the
style: the riddim. A bass
drum accent on the second
and fourth beat are
characteristic of a
typically reggae drum
beat. To this syncopic
patterns are often added.
The rhythm guitarist
plays chords in a
characteristic Reggae
rhythm, not on, but
between the beats.

afraid).
The fast
sections reflects the
mighty winds from the
north. In the middle
section, I borrowed a
folksong-like tune (by C.
Elling, a norwegian
composer). The text
(by Kristoffer Janson)
tells about old times
when the fishermen used
open boats: they had to
put their lives in the
hands of God. De opening

verwoest. Het
middendeel is een
bewerking van het Noorse
volkslied 'The
fisherman's speech to his
son'. De inhoud van het

composer:
High
Flyers are regarded as
people with promise and
potential.They are
winners. This is
music for
winners.
The
title, as well as being a
play-on-words, implies
the nature of the work.
It is a bright,
optimistic, and upbeat
piece attempting to
depict an exhilarating
ride on flying
carpet. The opening
rising chords immediately
suggest the gentle
elevation of the carpets'
ascent towards unknown
heights, leading to a
hint of a first theme in
the horns at Fig. B.
The first four notes
provide the thematic
material for the whole
work: C F G A. A
perpetual sense of
movement is achieved
through accented quaver
chords punctuating the
melodicmaterial of the
first main theme.
Fig. E sees the music of
the opening bars fully
realised, with flourishes
from the euphonium and
baritones representing
swirling clouds, shooting
stars, or passing birds
in flight. The same
subject is developed into
a lyrical second theme
with a new lush harmonic
treatment, evocative of
gliding over an expanse
of sparse
countryside.This section
ends with a note of
serenity but is shattered
by the urgent insistence
of the percussion
rhythms. The third
section introduces a new
idea with a slightly
distorted fanfare in the
cornets and
trombones. This
figure suggests for the
first time that there may
be trouble ahead. In
fact, there is no need to
fear and the journey can
continue without
aggravation. This fanfare
returns near the end to
signal a final note of
triumph. A new
rhythmic variant of the
cell motif emerges as the
third theme now
transformed by the
addition of a triplet
figure. The music
steadily gains momentum
before moving inexorably
towards the climactic
return of the music and
tonality of the opening
bars of the piece.
