Strathcarro
n is a movement from
Philip Sparke's Hymn of
the Highlands, in which
each movement reflects a
different location in the
beautiful Scottish
highlands. Stratcarron,
named after a village at
the head of Loch Carron,
near the Isle of Skye,
takes the form of a sword
dance which alternates
between fast and slow
tempi.

verschiedene Orte in den
Highlands von Schottland
zum Thema haben.

Hymn

Philip Sparke loste diese
Aufgabe meisterlich mit
der Komposition in sieben
Satzen, die fast alle

unterschiedlichen

eindrucksvolle Bilder der

Flugelhorn, Es-Horn und
Bariton ins
Rampenlicht.

This lovely
Scottish hymn, also known
as The Lord’s My
Shepherd, first appeared
in 1929 in the Scottish
songbook Northern
Psalter, where it was
incorrectly credited to
David Grant, an Aberdeen
businessman and amateur
musician. It was, in
fact, composed by Jessie
Irvine the daughter of
the parish minister at
Crimond. This arrangement
will be a musical jewel
in your concert
repertoire.
Crimond
ist ein geistliches Lied
aus Schottland aus dem
Jahr 1836.
Fälschlicherweise
zunächst einem
Geschäftsmann und
Amateurmusiker
zugeschrieben, stellte
sich später heraus,
dass die Musik
tatsächlich von Jessie
Irvine, der Tochter eines
Küsters, komponiert
worden war. Die schöne
Melodie der sonst
unbekannten Komponistin
gelangte 1929
schließlich in ein
schottisches Gesangbuch.
Herman Oldenstijl hat nun
dieses musikalische
Kleinod auf
eindrucksvolle Weise
für Brass Band
bearbeitet.

A Scottish Hymn
is a chorale arrangement
of a hymn composed by
Charles Hutcheson, a
Scottish merchant and
amateur composer who
lived from 1792 to 1860.
This hymn was given the
title
“Stracathro,â€
a typical Scottish name
after a town in the
district Angus. The
melody is used with
various hymn texts in the
Scottish church.
Als Grundlage
dieses Werkes diente die
wunderschöne
Psalmvertonung des
schottischen Händlers
und Laienkomponisten
Charles Hutcheson aus dem
Jahre 1832. Die Hymne,
die den typisch
schottischen Namen
Stracathro trägt,
besteht aus einem Choral,
der, von einem Intermezzo
unterbrochen, in drei
Varianten erklingt, um
dann in einem
jubilierenden Fortissimo
zu enden. Sehr
wirkungsvoll!

Tochter
Zion, also known as
See the Conquering
Hero Comes, is the
most famous chorus from
the oratorio Judas
Maccabaeus (1746) by
the composer George
Frideric Handel
(1685-1759). The heroic
epic based on the
Biblical story about
commander-in-chief Judas
Maccabaeus, was used by
Handel to celebrate the
English victory over the
rebellious Scottish. The
first performance of this
patriotic work - written
in the pleasing, rich
baroque style that
Handel’s music is
known for - was conducted
by himself; the success
was huge. The chorus
See the Conquering
Hero Comes was added
later, in 1748, drawn
from another oratorio
(Joshua).

beroemdste koor uit het
oratorium Judas

Bijbelse verhaal

gebaseerde heldenepos
werd door Händel
gebruikt om de
overwinning van de
Engelsen op de in opstand
gekomen Schotten te
vieren. De première
van dit patriottische
werk - geschreven in de
aangename,rijke
barokstijl waar
Händels muziek om
bekendstaat - werd door
hemzelf gedirigeerd, het
succes was enorm. In 1748
is het koor See the
Conquering Hero Comes
toegevoegd, dat afkomstig
was uit een ander
oratorium
(Josua).
