In 1989, the
demonstration named the
Baltic Way also
known as the Baltic
Chain— was held in
the Baltic states of
Estonia, Latvia and
Lithuania by its citizens
in a call for
independence from the
Soviet Union. On 23rd
August 1989, some two
million participants
formed a human chain,
hand-in-hand all the way
from the Estonian capital
of Tallinn its Latvian
counterpart, Riga,
through to the Lithuanian
capital of Vilnius - six
hundred kilometres long.
It became the longest
human chain ever created
and turned out to be the
final push needed for
much sought-after
independence. This
historic event became the
source of inspiration for
this composition. The
introduction of thefirst
movement, ‘Struggle
for Independence’,
is based on a nocturne
for piano by the renowned
Lithuanian composer and
painter Mikalojus
Konstantinas iurlionis
(1875-1911), thematic
material from which has
been incorporated
throughout the whole
composition. The
melancholic beginning is
followed by a powerful
theme which reflects the
resolve of the Baltic
people. The sudden
aggressive, dissonant
chords and a dominant
and—in rhythmic
terms—contrary
bass drum announce that
the resistance is not
going smoothly. Just for
a moment, we hear the
anthem of the Soviet
Union in the lower brass,
but this is relentlessly
pushed to the background
by the rest of the band
playing the Lithuanian
national anthem,
‘Tautiška giesm
’ (Lithuania, our
homeland). The second
movement, ‘Decades
of Suffering’,
echoes life under the
Soviet Union's thumb. In
the pursuit of
independence, a peaceful
protest is planned in
which a human chain is
formed across the Baltic
states of Estonia, Latvia
and Lithuania. This
‘Chain of
Freedom’ is
depicted in the final
movement of the work.

Spielberg’s films
the music has been

This new
original composition by
the Japanese composer
Itaru Sakai for ten-part
brass ensemble is
characterised by two main
ideas: a fanfare section,
deriving from a literal
quotation from the
opening of Mahlerâ??s
fifth symphony, and a
contrasting,wandering
theme thatâ??s rather
melancholy.
A
BOUNDARY ISLAND is
geschreven voor het Brass
Ensemble Rose en het
RivST Brass Quintet. De
première vond op 13
april 2010 plaats in de
Rose Hall in het Japanse
Toyonaka Osaka, tijdens
een concert waarin beide
blazersensemblesoptraden.
De componistwilde met dit
werk het karakter van de
muziek als universele
taal uitdrukken - een
taal waarin mensen uit
alle delen van de wereld
met elkaar kunnen
communiceren. Aan het
begin van de compositie
worden tweethemaâ??s ge
ntroduceerd: het eerste,
in fanfareachtige stijl,
is ge nspireerd op een
citaat uit de opening van
Mahlers vijfde symfonie.
Het staat in contrast met
het tweede, eerder
melancholische thema.Het
levendige hoofddeel
heeftzijn eigen krachtige
thema, maar grijpt ook
terug op de twee
openingsthemaâ??s, die
daarbij in een nieuw
jasje worden gestoken. Na
een korte terugkeer naar
het langzamere tempo van
de inleiding wordt het
werk met eenvlotter
gedeelteafgesloten. Die Hoffnung, dass in
der gemeinsamen Sprache
der Musik alle Menschen
miteinander sprechen
können, ist das
zentrale Thema von A
BOUNDARY ISLAND.
Zu
Beginn des Stückes
werden zwei Themen
vorgestellt: Das erste,
fanfarenartige Thema, das
aus einem Zitat vom
Beginn von Mahlers
SINFONIE NR. 5 entwickelt
wurde, steht im Kontrast
zum zweiten, eher
melancholischen Thema.
Der bewegte
Hauptteilpräsentiert
ein eigenes, kraftvolles
Hauptthema, bezieht aber
auch beide
Einleitungsthemen wieder
mit ein und rückt
diese teilweise in ein
neues Licht. Nach einem
kurzen Einschub im
langsamen Eingangstempo
folgt ein stretta-artiger
Schluss.

Brass was
commissioned by Osaka
Concert Brass, one of
Japan’s top brass
bands, and premiered by
them on 27th December
2018 during a concert
which celebrated their
10th Anniversary. The
work opens in lively mood
with fanfare-style
figures from the lower
band which are answered
by the cornets. This
interplay intensifies
until the mood calms
suddenly to introduce a
chorale which leads to a
duet-cadenza for cornet
and euphonium. The
rhythmic mood of the
opening soon returns and
leads to the main theme
of the work, a modal
caccia which
features various section
of the band. A short
bridge passage leads to a
change of key and a new
cantabile theme
which isintroduced by
euphoniums and baritone.
This is taken up by the
full band after another
change of key and leads
back to the caccia
theme. A transformed
version of the opening
fanfare returns to close
the work.
Sparkling
Brass werd geschreven
in opdracht van Osaka
Concert Brass voor een
concert ter gelegenheid
van het tienjarig bestaan
van die band. Het werk
opent in een levendige
sfeer, met fanfareachtige
motieven in het lage
koper, beantwoord door de
kornetten. Dit samenspel
wordt intenser tot de
sfeer plotseling rustiger
wordt en er een koraal
naar voren komt dat leidt
naar een duet-cadens voor
kornet en eufonium. De
ritmische sfeer van het
begin keert snel terug en
mondt uit in het
hoofdthema, een modale
caccia met diverse
secties uit de band. Een
korte bridgepassage
brengt een verandering in
toonsoort en een nieuw
cantabile thema, ge
ntroduceerd door de
eufoniumsen bariton. Dit
wordt overgenomen door de
hele band na nog een
toonsoortverandering,
waarna het
caccia-thema
terugkeert. Het werk
besluit met een
getransformeerde versie
van de openingsfanfare.
Sparkling
Brass wurde von Osaka
Concert Brass, einer der
führenden japanischen
Brass Bands, in Auftrag
gegeben und bei einem
Konzert zum
10-jährigen
Jubiläum
uraufgeführt. Das Werk
beginnt lebhaft mit
Fanfarenfiguren in den
tieferen Stimmen, die von
den Kornetten beantwortet
werden. Dieses
Wechselspiel wird
intensiver, bis sich die
Stimmung plötzlich
beruhigt und ein Choral
erklingt, der in eine
Duo-Kadenz für Kornett
und Euphonium mündet.
Der rhythmische Charakter
des Anfangs kehrt bald
zurück und führt
zum Hauptthema des
Werkes, einer modalen
Caccia, in der
verschiedene
Instrumentengruppen der
Brass Band hervorgehoben
werden. Eine kurze
Überleitung führt
zu einemTonartwechsel und
einem neuen
Cantabile-Thema, das von
den Euphonien und
Baritonen eingeleitet
wird. Nach einem weiteren
Tonartwechsel wird es von
der gesamten Brass Band
übernommen und
führt wieder zum
Caccia-Thema zurück.
Zum Schluss des Werkes
erklingt noch einmal eine
veränderte Version der
Eröffnungsfanfare.

2018 during a concert
which celebrated their
10th Anniversary. The
work opens in lively mood
with fanfare-style
figures from the lower
band which are answered
by the cornets. This
interplay intensifies
until the mood calms
suddenly to introduce a
chorale which leads to a
duet-cadenza for cornet
and euphonium. The
rhythmic mood of the
opening soon returns and
leads to the main theme
of the work, a modal
caccia which
features various section
of the band. A short
bridge passage leads to a
change of key and a new
cantabile theme
which isintroduced by
euphoniums and baritone.
This is taken up by the
full band after another
change of key and leads
back to the caccia
theme. A transformed
version of the opening
fanfare returns to close
the work.
Sparkling
Brass werd geschreven
in opdracht van Osaka
Concert Brass voor een
concert ter gelegenheid
van het tienjarig bestaan
van die band. Het werk
opent in een levendige
sfeer, met fanfareachtige
motieven in het lage
koper, beantwoord door de
kornetten. Dit samenspel
wordt intenser tot de
sfeer plotseling rustiger
wordt en er een koraal
naar voren komt dat leidt
naar een duet-cadens voor
kornet en eufonium. De
ritmische sfeer van het
begin keert snel terug en
mondt uit in het
hoofdthema, een modale
caccia met diverse
secties uit de band. Een
korte bridgepassage
brengt een verandering in
toonsoort en een nieuw
cantabile thema, ge
ntroduceerd door de
eufoniumsen bariton. Dit
wordt overgenomen door de
hele band na nog een
toonsoortverandering,
waarna het
caccia-thema
terugkeert. Het werk
besluit met een
getransformeerde versie
van de openingsfanfare.
Sparkling
Brass wurde von Osaka
Concert Brass, einer der
führenden japanischen
Brass Bands, in Auftrag
gegeben und bei einem
Konzert zum
10-jährigen
Jubiläum
uraufgeführt. Das Werk
beginnt lebhaft mit
Fanfarenfiguren in den
tieferen Stimmen, die von
den Kornetten beantwortet
werden. Dieses
Wechselspiel wird
intensiver, bis sich die
Stimmung plötzlich
beruhigt und ein Choral
erklingt, der in eine
Duo-Kadenz für Kornett
und Euphonium mündet.
Der rhythmische Charakter
des Anfangs kehrt bald
zurück und führt
zum Hauptthema des
Werkes, einer modalen
Caccia, in der
verschiedene
Instrumentengruppen der
Brass Band hervorgehoben
werden. Eine kurze
Überleitung führt
zu einemTonartwechsel und
einem neuen
Cantabile-Thema, das von
den Euphonien und
Baritonen eingeleitet
wird. Nach einem weiteren
Tonartwechsel wird es von
der gesamten Brass Band
übernommen und
führt wieder zum
Caccia-Thema zurück.
Zum Schluss des Werkes
erklingt noch einmal eine
veränderte Version der
Eröffnungsfanfare.

Dedicated to
the North American
Brass Band
Association, this is
music that is full of
energy and dynamic
extremes. In form it
draws from the overture
style, although the
themes are self-existing
and the piece is
programmatic. Working
well asa festival opener,
it sets a mood of
excitement. Following the
rhythmic fanfares of the
opening, the first theme
is presented in the
cornets followed by a
return to the same
rhythmic material. A
second theme appears in
the horn section and
isdeveloped, changing
into a darker and
sinister form of the same
motif. Eventually a
Maestoso section
is reached, full of
sustained block chords in
the cornets and
trombones, as the rest of
the band counters with
cascading lines that
weavestraight through the
brighter
instruments.
Dit
levendige werk vol
dynamische uitersten is
opgedragen aan de
North American Brass
Band Association. Qua
vorm is het geënt op
de ouverturestijl, hoewel
de thema’s op
zichzelf staan en het een
programmatische
compositie betreft. Het
is heelgeschikt voor de
opening van een festival,
want het creëert een
enthousiaste,
verwachtingsvolle
stemming. Na de ritmische
fanfares van de opening
wordt het eerste thema
gepresenteerd in de
cornetten, gevolgd door
een terugkeer naar
hetzelfderitmische
materiaal. Er verschijnt
een tweede thema in de
hoornsectie, dat wordt
doorontwikkeld en
overgaat in een duistere
en onheilspellende vorm
van hetzelfde motief.
Uiteindelijk komt er een
maestoso gedeelte tot
stand, vol aangehouden
akkoordenin de kornetten
en trombones, waarbij de
rest van het orkest
dalende lijnen produceert
die door de helder
klinkende instrumenten
heen zijn
geweven.
Dieses
Musikstück, das voller
Energie und von extremer
Dynamik geprägt ist,
wurde der North
American Brass Band
Association gewidmet.
Der formale Aufbau des
Werkes orientiert sich an
einer Ouvertüre, auch
wenn die Themen für
sich selbst stehenund das
Stück programmatisch
ist. Es eignet sich gut
als Eröffnungsstück
für ein Festival, da
es das Publikum
begeistern wird. Auf den
Fanfarenrhythmus der
Einleitung folgt das
erste Thema, das von den
Kornetten vorgestellt
wird und schließlich
zumursprünglichen
rhythmischen Material
zurückkehrt. Das
zweite Thema wird von den
Hörnern gespielt und
weiterentwickelt, wobei
das gleiche Motiv in eine
dunklere und
unheimlichere Stimmung
wechselt. Danach erklingt
ein Maestoso-Teil mit
Akkordblöckenin den
Kornetten und Posaunen,
während das restliche
Orchester kaskadenartige
Melodielinien spielt, die
sich durch die helleren
Instrumente
schlängeln.

Coppola‘s 1972 film
The Godfather is
seen by many to be a
turning point in
cinematic history. The
sparse score, written by
Nino Rota, is famous for
its haunting main theme,
played by a solo trumpet,
from which The
Godfather Waltz is
derived. Philip Sparke
has created a stunning
arrangement of this
theme, which appears in
all three parts of the
trilogy.

Since most of
the bands competing in
the 4th Section of the
Dutch National
Championships have many
young players, this piece
is stylistically
youthful—
especially in the opening
and closing sections. An
arpeggio pattern appears
numerous times in all
registers and is the
basic musical element of
the main melody,
alternating with a second
theme that has a slightly
different melodic
character. The middle
section is conceived like
a chorale, introduced and
developed stepwise:
firstly with short
patterns and gradually in
increasingly long
snippets, until
it’s played in its
glorious entirety at
measure 216. No real solo
passages are included but
rather small
chambercombinations, thus
offering the opportunity
to various players to
display their technical
and performance skills.
The finale recaptures
musical material from the
first section of the
piece and provides a
majestic conclusion.
Vermits de meeste
bands die aan het
jaarlijkse NBK
(Nederlandse Brass Band
Kampioenschappen)
deelnemen veel jonge
muzikanten in hun rangen
hebben, is dit werk
overwegend jeugdig van
karakter - vooral in de
hoekdelen. Een
arpeggio-figuur vormt de
basis van het hoofdthema
en het verschijnt in alle
registers. Een tweede
muzikaal gegeven
dialogeert met die
hoofdmelodie: samen
stofferen ze de
openingssectie van het
werk. Dan volgt een
koraalmatig middendeel:
stapsgewijs worden korte
en nadien steeds langere
melodische fragmenten aan
elkaar geregen tot de
koraal in haar volle
pracht integraal
weerklinkt aan maat 205.
Echte solopassages komen
niet voor in dit werk,
maar viadiverse kleine
kamermuziek-combinaties
wordt aan diverse musici
de mogelijkheid geboden
hun muzikale kwaliteiten
te etaleren. In de
laatste beweging worden
een aantal muzikale
bouwstenen van het
begindeel hernomen en
verder uitgewerkt om dan
te besluiten in een
majestueus slot.

Apart from a hymn and a

The commission to create

It takes the form of a

The opening
of this three-movement
work features an initial
appearance of the
thematic material that
returns in various guises
later on in the work. The
leitmotiv centres on a
minor second. A range
of thematic variations is
heard in the lively and
energetic
Metamorphosis One.
This movement is
interrupted by an
atmospheric meno mosso,
containing melodic
passages that return to
the opening
theme. Metamorhosis
Two is characterised
by various changes in
tempo and musical
character. Seven
different soloists
transform the thematic
material each in their
own way. This eventually
culminates in a
passionate tutti
passage. The source of
inspiration for
Metamorphosis
Three is the
so-called BACH-motif, a
musical autograph
consisting of the notes B
flat, A, C and B. This
distinctive motif arises
from the leitmotiv (here
a descending minor
second), which
continuesto evolve
through various
transpositions and
transformations. For the
composer, this
spectacular last movement
is an homage to one of
the greatest and most
influential composers in
the history of music:
Johann Sebastian
Bach.
An
impressive contest piece
commissioned by Brass
Band Schoonhoven,
performed at the 2014
European Brass Band
Championships.
In de
opening van deze
driedelige compositie
wordt het thematische
materiaal gepresenteerd
dat verderop in het werk
in allerlei
transformaties voorkomt.
De ‘kleine
secunde’ dient
daarbij als leidmotief.
In het levendige en
flitsende
Metamorphosis One
wordt volop gevarieerd
met de thematiek. Het
deel wordt onderbroken
door een sfeervol meno
mosso met daarin
melodische passages die
teruggrijpen op het
beginthema. In
Metamorhosis Two
treden veel veranderingen
op in het tempo en het
muzikale karakter. Zeven
verschillende solisten
transformeren ieder op
hun eigen wijze het
thematische materiaal.
Uiteindelijk resulteert
dat in een gepassioneerd,
tuttigespeeld
gedeelte. De
inspiratiebron voor
Metamorphosis
Three is het
zogenaamde BACH-motief,
een muzikale handtekening
met de noten Bes, A, C en
B. Dit karakteristieke
motief ontstaat vanuit
het leidmotief (in dit
geval een dalende kleine
secunde) en verandert
voortdurend van gedaante
door allerlei
transposities en
omvormingen. De componist
beschouwt dit
spectaculaire laatste
deel als een eerbetoon
aan een van de grootste
en invloedrijkste
componisten uit de
geschiedenis van de
muziek: Johann
SebastianBach.
In
der Eröffnung dieses
dreisätzigen Werkes
wird zum ersten Mal das
thematische Material
präsentiert, das im
weiteren Verlauf in
diversen Gewändern
wiederkehrt. Kern des
Leitmotivs ist eine
kleine Sekunde. Eine
Reihe von thematischen
Variationen ist in der
lebhaften und
energiereichen
Metamorphosis One
zu hören. Der Satz
wird von einem
stimmungsvollen Meno
mosso aus melodischen
Passagen, die zum
Eröffnungsthema
zurückführen,
unterbrochen. Metam
orphosis Two ist von
mehreren Wechseln im
Tempo und im
musikalischen Charakter
geprägt. Sieben
verschiedene Solisten
verwandeln das
thematische Material
jedes auf seine eigene
Weise. Das Ganze steigert
sich schließlich zu
einemfulminanten
Tutti. Quelle der
Inspiration für
Metamorphosis
Three ist das so
genannte BACH-Motiv, eine
musikalische Signatur aus
den Tönen B, A, C und
H. Dieses ausgeprägte
Motiv geht aus dem
Leitmotiv hervor (hier
ist es eine absteigende
kleine Sekunde),welches
fortwährend durch
verschiedene
Transpositionen und
Transformationen
weiterentwickelt wird.
Für den Komponisten
ist dieser
spektakuläre letzte
Satz eine Hommage an
einen der größten
und einflussreichsten
Komponisten der
Musikgeschichte:
JohannSebastian
Bach.
