The opening
of this three-movement
work features an initial
appearance of the
thematic material that
returns in various guises
later on in the work. The
leitmotiv centres on a
minor second. A range
of thematic variations is
heard in the lively and
energetic
Metamorphosis One.
This movement is
interrupted by an
atmospheric meno mosso,
containing melodic
passages that return to
the opening
theme. Metamorhosis
Two is characterised
by various changes in
tempo and musical
character. Seven
different soloists
transform the thematic
material each in their
own way. This eventually
culminates in a
passionate tutti
passage. The source of
inspiration for
Metamorphosis
Three is the
so-called BACH-motif, a
musical autograph
consisting of the notes B
flat, A, C and B. This
distinctive motif arises
from the leitmotiv (here
a descending minor
second), which
continuesto evolve
through various
transpositions and
transformations. For the
composer, this
spectacular last movement
is an homage to one of
the greatest and most
influential composers in
the history of music:
Johann Sebastian
Bach.
An
impressive contest piece
commissioned by Brass
Band Schoonhoven,
performed at the 2014
European Brass Band
Championships.
In de
opening van deze
driedelige compositie
wordt het thematische
materiaal gepresenteerd
dat verderop in het werk
in allerlei
transformaties voorkomt.
De ‘kleine
secunde’ dient
daarbij als leidmotief.
In het levendige en
flitsende
Metamorphosis One
wordt volop gevarieerd
met de thematiek. Het
deel wordt onderbroken
door een sfeervol meno
mosso met daarin
melodische passages die
teruggrijpen op het
beginthema. In
Metamorhosis Two
treden veel veranderingen
op in het tempo en het
muzikale karakter. Zeven
verschillende solisten
transformeren ieder op
hun eigen wijze het
thematische materiaal.
Uiteindelijk resulteert
dat in een gepassioneerd,
tuttigespeeld
gedeelte. De
inspiratiebron voor
Metamorphosis
Three is het
zogenaamde BACH-motief,
een muzikale handtekening
met de noten Bes, A, C en
B. Dit karakteristieke
motief ontstaat vanuit
het leidmotief (in dit
geval een dalende kleine
secunde) en verandert
voortdurend van gedaante
door allerlei
transposities en
omvormingen. De componist
beschouwt dit
spectaculaire laatste
deel als een eerbetoon
aan een van de grootste
en invloedrijkste
componisten uit de
geschiedenis van de
muziek: Johann
SebastianBach.
In
der Eröffnung dieses
dreisätzigen Werkes
wird zum ersten Mal das
thematische Material
präsentiert, das im
weiteren Verlauf in
diversen Gewändern
wiederkehrt. Kern des
Leitmotivs ist eine
kleine Sekunde. Eine
Reihe von thematischen
Variationen ist in der
lebhaften und
energiereichen
Metamorphosis One
zu hören. Der Satz
wird von einem
stimmungsvollen Meno
mosso aus melodischen
Passagen, die zum
Eröffnungsthema
zurückführen,
unterbrochen. Metam
orphosis Two ist von
mehreren Wechseln im
Tempo und im
musikalischen Charakter
geprägt. Sieben
verschiedene Solisten
verwandeln das
thematische Material
jedes auf seine eigene
Weise. Das Ganze steigert
sich schließlich zu
einemfulminanten
Tutti. Quelle der
Inspiration für
Metamorphosis
Three ist das so
genannte BACH-Motiv, eine
musikalische Signatur aus
den Tönen B, A, C und
H. Dieses ausgeprägte
Motiv geht aus dem
Leitmotiv hervor (hier
ist es eine absteigende
kleine Sekunde),welches
fortwährend durch
verschiedene
Transpositionen und
Transformationen
weiterentwickelt wird.
Für den Komponisten
ist dieser
spektakuläre letzte
Satz eine Hommage an
einen der größten
und einflussreichsten
Komponisten der
Musikgeschichte:
JohannSebastian
Bach.

This stately
concert opener was
originally written by Jan
Van der Roost for a
special event in which
six respected wind
orchestras (two Belgian
and four Dutch) of
different composition
(two symphonic bands, two
fanfare bands and two
brass bands) were
featured during six
concerts. Each evening
brought forth a
performance by a
symphonic band, a
fanfare, and brass band,
so that the audience
could experience all
three types of ensembles.
This was indeed an
original concept.The
name, ConZEnSus, comes
from a combination of the
words, ‘Concert
Cyclus’ (concert
series) and
‘zes’ (Dutch
for ‘six’).
This leads to a new word,
which refers to
‘consensus’.
The general tenor of the
cycle isthus immediately
indicated. The richness
of color of the various
ensembles is revealed
through an open and
friendly atmosphere.
During all six concerts
(over a span of three
years), ConZEnSus
functioned as a permanent
opening number for each
orchestra. Thus the same
musical story was
portrayed in three
different packages.

In 1989, the
demonstration named the
Baltic Way also
known as the Baltic
Chain— was held in
the Baltic states of
Estonia, Latvia and
Lithuania by its citizens
in a call for
independence from the
Soviet Union. On 23rd
August 1989, some two
million participants
formed a human chain,
hand-in-hand all the way
from the Estonian capital
of Tallinn its Latvian
counterpart, Riga,
through to the Lithuanian
capital of Vilnius - six
hundred kilometres long.
It became the longest
human chain ever created
and turned out to be the
final push needed for
much sought-after
independence. This
historic event became the
source of inspiration for
this composition. The
introduction of thefirst
movement, ‘Struggle
for Independence’,
is based on a nocturne
for piano by the renowned
Lithuanian composer and
painter Mikalojus
Konstantinas iurlionis
(1875-1911), thematic
material from which has
been incorporated
throughout the whole
composition. The
melancholic beginning is
followed by a powerful
theme which reflects the
resolve of the Baltic
people. The sudden
aggressive, dissonant
chords and a dominant
and—in rhythmic
terms—contrary
bass drum announce that
the resistance is not
going smoothly. Just for
a moment, we hear the
anthem of the Soviet
Union in the lower brass,
but this is relentlessly
pushed to the background
by the rest of the band
playing the Lithuanian
national anthem,
‘Tautiška giesm
’ (Lithuania, our
homeland). The second
movement, ‘Decades
of Suffering’,
echoes life under the
Soviet Union's thumb. In
the pursuit of
independence, a peaceful
protest is planned in
which a human chain is
formed across the Baltic
states of Estonia, Latvia
and Lithuania. This
‘Chain of
Freedom’ is
depicted in the final
movement of the work.
De Baltische Weg

Baltische staten die in
1989 plaatsvond als een
roep om onafhankelijkheid

zeshonderd kilometer

mensen gevormd. Op 23
augustus 1989 gaven al
die mensen elkaar de hand
en werd De Baltische Weg
de langste menselijke

gebaseerd op een nocturne

devooraanstaande Litouwse
componist en
kunstschilder Mikalojus
Konstantinas iurlionis
(1875-1911). Het
thematische materiaal van
deze nocturne is door de
hele compositie heen
verwerkt. Na het
melancholische begin
volgt een krachtig thema,
waarmee de strijdbaarheid
van de Baltische
bevolking wordt
uitgebeeld. De
plotselinge agressieve
dissonante akkoorden en
een dominante en ritmisch
gezien tegendraadse grote
trom laten horen dat het
verzet niet eenvoudig
verloopt. Even klinkt het
begin van het volkslied
van de Sovjet-Unie in het
lage koper, maar dat
wordt door de rest van de

door het Litouwse
nationale volkslied

This new
original composition by
the Japanese composer
Itaru Sakai for ten-part
brass ensemble is
characterised by two main
ideas: a fanfare section,
deriving from a literal
quotation from the
opening of Mahlerâ??s
fifth symphony, and a
contrasting,wandering
theme thatâ??s rather
melancholy.
A
BOUNDARY ISLAND is
geschreven voor het Brass
Ensemble Rose en het
RivST Brass Quintet. De
première vond op 13
april 2010 plaats in de
Rose Hall in het Japanse
Toyonaka Osaka, tijdens
een concert waarin beide
blazersensemblesoptraden.
De componistwilde met dit
werk het karakter van de
muziek als universele
taal uitdrukken - een
taal waarin mensen uit
alle delen van de wereld
met elkaar kunnen
communiceren. Aan het
begin van de compositie
worden tweethemaâ??s ge
ntroduceerd: het eerste,
in fanfareachtige stijl,
is ge nspireerd op een
citaat uit de opening van
Mahlers vijfde symfonie.
Het staat in contrast met
het tweede, eerder
melancholische thema.Het
levendige hoofddeel
heeftzijn eigen krachtige
thema, maar grijpt ook
terug op de twee
openingsthemaâ??s, die
daarbij in een nieuw
jasje worden gestoken. Na
een korte terugkeer naar
het langzamere tempo van
de inleiding wordt het
werk met eenvlotter
gedeelteafgesloten. Die Hoffnung, dass in
der gemeinsamen Sprache
der Musik alle Menschen
miteinander sprechen
können, ist das
zentrale Thema von A
BOUNDARY ISLAND.
Zu
Beginn des Stückes
werden zwei Themen
vorgestellt: Das erste,
fanfarenartige Thema, das
aus einem Zitat vom
Beginn von Mahlers
SINFONIE NR. 5 entwickelt
wurde, steht im Kontrast
zum zweiten, eher

Brass was

Concert Brass, one of

them on 27th December
2018 during a concert

10th Anniversary. The
work opens in lively mood
with fanfare-style
figures from the lower
band which are answered
by the cornets. This
interplay intensifies
until the mood calms
suddenly to introduce a
chorale which leads to a
duet-cadenza for cornet
and euphonium. The
rhythmic mood of the
opening soon returns and
leads to the main theme
of the work, a modal
caccia which
features various section
of the band. A short
bridge passage leads to a
change of key and a new
cantabile theme
which isintroduced by
euphoniums and baritone.
This is taken up by the
full band after another
change of key and leads
back to the caccia
theme. A transformed
version of the opening
fanfare returns to close
the work.

naar een duet-cadens voor

ritmische sfeer van het
begin keert snel terug en
mondt uit in het
hoofdthema, een modale

korte bridgepassage
brengt een verandering in
toonsoort en een nieuw
cantabile thema, ge

eufoniumsen bariton. Dit
wordt overgenomen door de

toonsoortverandering,
waarna het

terugkeert. Het werk

For
Cityscapes, the
composer used the
metropolis of New York,
the largest city of the
United States, as a
source of inspiration.
The first movement
mirrors the skyline of
the ‘Big

movement two, Central
Park is introduced and in
the closing movement of
this triptych, the
ever-sparkling Manhattan,
known for its many
skyscrapers, and its
financial centre Wall
Street, is the focal
point. Not only are the
busy city traffic and the
chaotic hustle and bustle
expressed in the music,
but also the impressive
buildings, including the
famous Empire State
Building. Let the magic
of New York shine with
this dramatic new item

This

as a blues, accompanied

gebaseerd op een bekende

eerste maten komt in de
euphoniums en bassen
direct de volksmelodie
naar voren, die uitmondt
in een aantal lyrische
maten. Deze vormen de
inleiding tot een sneller
tempo (Allegro risoluto)
waarin de melodie in
fragmenten wordt
geëxposeerddoor
euphoniums, baritons en
bugel, canonisch
beantwoord door de
trombones. In het
daaropvolgende Allegro

concertino-achtig spel in
diverse
instrumentgroepen,
afgewisseld met een
nieuwe, zangerige
melodie. Het deel sluit
af met devolksmelodie in
de trombones, maar nu
gedempt.Het tweede deel
is een ballade waarin de
volksmelodie in majeur
klinkt. Na een inleiding
van gedempte cornetten en
trombones gevolgd door
zacht koper is de melodie
te horen in de euphoniums
en baritons in een
lyrische zetting. Even
wordt detoonsoort weer
mineur, wanneer
instrumentgroepen elkaar
imiteren. Met een

in majeur. Na een
tussenspel klinkt een
ornamentele variatie,
vertolkt door een
cornetsolo en
euphoniumsolo,waarna een
naspel met gedempte
cornetten en trombones
volgt. Het laatste deel
komt tot klinken in een
flitsend Allegro vivace,
aanvankelijk vergezeld
door chromatische lijnen
in de begeleiding en een
markant, door
kwartentriolen
afgewisseld ritme in het
slagwerk. Dan klinkt de
blues door in de
cornetten enhoorns,
begeleid door een jazzy
ritme waarin de sfeer van
de Bolero van Ravel even
doorklinkt. Dit leidt via
een parallelle
triolenpassage terug naar
het beginthema van dit
deel, dat nu in diverse
instrumenten te horen is.
Dan verschijnt
devolksmelodie weer in
haar pure vorm in de
euphoniums, waarop de
bugel en later de
solocornet reageert. Via
enkele syncopische maten
horen we het begin van de
melodie nu in majeur
gespeeld door
respectievelijk cornetten

slotgedeelteomvat een
melodieuze lijn in lange
noten die leidt naar een

Every year a
competition for wind
orchestras and brass
bands takes place in
Wallberg, Switzerland.
Apart from a hymn and a
solo piece, all
orchestras also have a
compulsory piece to play.
The commission to create
a compulsory piece for
the 2012 competition fell
to Jan de Haan. The
composition is entitled
Musica Helvetica.
It takes the form of a
three-part concert work,
in which the last two
parts flow directly from
one to the other. The
first part, Musica
Prima, is a brisk
virtuoso opening with
jazz flavours woven in.
The following section,
Musica Sacra,
offers a contrast with an
extraordinarily colourful
instrumentation for the
gorgeous main theme.
Thefinal part, Musica
Alpina, is inspired
by the great variety of
scenery in Switzerland.
With its witty humour it
makes a worthy conclusion
to this beautiful
tryptich.
In het
Zwitserse Wallberg wordt
ieder jaar een concours
voor harmonieorkesten en
brassbands georganiseerd.
Naast een hymne en een
solowerk dienen alle
orkesten een verplicht
werk uit te voeren. Voor
het concours van 2012
werd eenopdracht
verstrekt aan Jan de
Haan. De compositie kreeg
Musica Helvetica
als titel mee. Het gaat
om een driedelig
concertwerk waarvan de
laatste twee delen
onafgebroken in elkaar

Every year a
competition for wind
orchestras and brass
bands takes place in
Wallberg, Switzerland.
Apart from a hymn and a
solo piece, all
orchestras also have a
compulsory piece to play.
The commission to create
a compulsory piece for
the 2012 competition fell
to Jan de Haan. The
composition is entitled
Musica Helvetica.
It takes the form of a
three-part concert work,
in which the last two
parts flow directly from
one to the other. The
first part, Musica
Prima, is a brisk
virtuoso opening with
jazz flavours woven in.
The following section,
Musica Sacra,
offers a contrast with an
extraordinarily colourful
instrumentation for the
gorgeous main theme.
Thefinal part, Musica
Alpina, is inspired
by the great variety of
scenery in Switzerland.
With its witty humour it
makes a worthy conclusion
to this beautiful
tryptich.
In het
Zwitserse Wallberg wordt
ieder jaar een concours
voor harmonieorkesten en
brassbands georganiseerd.
Naast een hymne en een
solowerk dienen alle
orkesten een verplicht
werk uit te voeren. Voor
het concours van 2012
werd eenopdracht
verstrekt aan Jan de
Haan. De compositie kreeg
Musica Helvetica
als titel mee. Het gaat
om een driedelig
concertwerk waarvan de
laatste twee delen
onafgebroken in elkaar
overgaan. Het eerste
deel, Musica
Prima,is een virtuoze
en flitsende opening met
hier en daar jazzy
invloeden. In contrast

In
Japan, July the 7th is a
holiday known as
Tanabata, for which large
celebrations are held
throughout the country.
The holiday is based on a
legend about a young man
and a young woman who are
separated by the Milky
Way and can only see each
other once a year on this
night. The Seventh
Night of July is
Itaru Sakai’s
musical interpretation of
this romantic legend. The
flugel horn and euphonium
solos during the middle
movement represent the
two main themes from the
legend.
In Japan
vindt op 7 juli jaarlijks
het feest Tanabata
plaats, met vele
festiviteiten in het hele
land. Volgens een legende
mogen een jonge man en
vrouw in de vorm van twee
sterren die door de
Melkweg van elkaar
gescheiden zijn elkaar
alleen op deze ene avond
in het jaar ontmoeten.
The Seventh Night of
July is Itaru
Sakai’s muzikale
weerspiegeling van dit
romantische verhaal. De
bugel- en
euphoniumsolo’s in
het middelste deel staan
symbool voor de
hoofdpersonen uit de
legende.

This piece
takes you on a journey to
the sunny Californian
city of Pasadena. The
piece reflects two
contrasting aspects of
the city,. Firstly the
serene expressive side
with exquisite statues,
works of art and sun
drenched villas and
secondly the hot Latin
side with the street
parade which leads up to
the famous American
Football final in the
Rose Bowl stadium.
Pasadena
ist nach der
gleichnamigen
kalifornischen Stadt
benannt. Das Werk
beschreibt diese auf zwei
unterschiedliche Weisen.
Im ersten Teil der
Komposition kommt ein
expressives Element zum
Ausdruck; hier finden mit
Statuen geschmückte,
imposante Villen ihren
musikalischen
Niederschlag. Ganz anders
ist der zweite Teil im
Swing-Rhythmus und
Latin-Rock-Stil. Er
beschreibt das
traditionelle
Footballspiel um den
'Rose Bowl' am
Neujahrstag, dem die
Parade 'Tournament of
Roses' vorangeht.
Kontrastiv und
überzeugend!
