excellent piece of
musical theatre featuring
a comedy act for triangle
soloist and band. The
music itself does not
sound comical, being
based on Anton
Dvorak’s
Symphony in E Minor
(From the New World),
but the right mix of
seriousness and humour
brings a surprising
effect. With a bit of
acting talent from your
triangle soloist, this
interpretation of the
well known classical
melody will be a major
hit. Whether you choose
Antonin’s New
World as a
“triangle
solo†novelty piece
or simply as a delightful
adaptation of
Dvorak’s immensely
popular Ninth Symphony,
both the band and the
audience will love

From Ancient
Times is a major work
for brass band, inspired
largely by the music of
the Franco-Flemish School
of the Renaissance. Hints
of Gregorian chant and
middle age dances pay
tribute to music from
even earlier times. The
foundation of this
spectacular work rests on
truly ‘ancient
times’ while the
tonal language is of a
much more modern nature!

‘Panem et
Circenses’, Bread and
Games were essential for
keeping the citizens of
ancient Rome in check.
While the bread was
meant for the poorest
among the Romans, the
Games were Popular
Pastime Number One for
everybody. There were
different kinds of games,
such as chariot races
(especially popular with
female spectators), or
wild-beast fights, where
lions, tigers, bulls or
bears were set on one
another or even on human
beings. Most popular,
however, were the
Gladiator fights.
In ‘Bread and Games’
William Vean depicts one
of the many fights in the
antique Colosseum. 1.
Entrance of the
Gladiators: By powerful
bugle-calls the attention
of the peoplewas asked
for, after which the
Gladiators entered the
Arena at the sound of
heroic
marching-music. 2.Swor
dfight: We can hear that
the fights were not mere
child’s play in this
part.On the contrary,
they were a matter of
life and death and were
fought
accordingly. 3.Mercy
of the Emperor: Sometimes
a wounded gladiator could
be fortunate, depending
on the mercy of the
audience. Waving one’s
handkerchief meant mercy,
a turned-down thumb meant
no pardon. The Emperor
had the right to take the
final decision, but he
usually complied with the
wish of the majority of
the public. 4.Lap of
Honour: Gladiators were
mainly selected among
slaves, convicted
criminals, or prisoners
of war. Consequently,
winning was very
important, as it would
mean fame, honour and
sometimes even wealth. A
lap of honour, therefore,
was the winner’s due
reward.

This
stately work is very
loosely based on the
opening chords from 'The
Lamb', although there are
no direct quotations from
that work. The opening
chorale is played as
gradually more themes are
added above in a
dignified and legato
subject where instruments
sustain notes to give a
lingering echo effect.
Players need to be aware
of their role in this to
maximise the effect. The
second subject increases
the intensity until the
time signature change
introduces a second
chorale. Then, a short
imitative passage leads
to a rising appogiatura
theme and the climax of
the work, which
re-introduces the
original chorale in a
major tonality. With
versions for brass
ensemble, brass band,
wind orchestra and
woodwind orchestra, this
work has been placed in
concerts when a
meaningful, reflective
moment is required.
