This
musical fantasy depicts
the history of the Dutch
fortified town of Elburg.
The work begins with an
atmospheric medieval
picture of the Convent of
St Agnes, the nunnery
that was built in the
first half of the 15th
century. We hear the
sound of the convent
bells together with an
upward motif, which will
reappear later in the
work. Next, the rest of
Elburg is featured,
including the fortress -
from which the bells of
the Sint-Nicolaaskerk
(Saint Nicholas Church)
are ringing. Then,
cheerful sounds can be
heard at the Vischpoort
(Fish Gate), where a
dancing group is
performing a 16th century
French folk dance (a
branle des chevaux). We
also hear old wagons
rumbling over the
town’scobble
stones. Trade made this
Hanseatic town a lively
place. The repetitive
upward motif first heard
in the introduction now
develops into a more
distinct feature,
reflecting the mercantile
spirit of the town
residents.Then follows
the slow middle movement,
in which the clock has
been turned back to the
time when Elburg was
still lying on the
Zuiderzee (which was a
bay of the North Sea),
and was struggling with
floods. After the second
St. Marcellus Flood
(1362) and the water
flood of 1367 it was
decided that the town
would be relocated. We
now hear the theme of
branle des chevaux in a
minor key, followed by a
death bell sounding in
remembrance of the
drowned citizens of the
former town. Back in our
own time, a slow,
expressive theme in
Baroque style mirrors
Elburg’s tranquil
places, such as the
Feithenhof (Feithen
Court) and the
Weduwenhofje (Widow
Court). Then the bustle
returns with motifs from
the introduction,
followed by an attractive
theme in which
present-day Elburg is
portrayed with its many
tourists. Now, suddenly,
there is an echo from the
past, depicting the
dramatic floods and wars
that once plagued the
town. This leads to the
grand closing theme:
branle des chevaux
is heard for a final time
from the perspective of
the historic town centre.
Deze muzikale
fantasie vertelt de
geschiedenis van de
Nederlandse vestingstad
Elburg. Het werk begint
met een middeleeuws
sfeerbeeld vanuit het
Agnietenklooster, het
nonnenklooster dat in de
eerste helft van de 15e
eeuw werd gebouwd. We
horen de kloosterklok
samen met een opwaarts
motief, dat ook later in
het werk terugkomt.
Vervolgens komt de rest
van Elburg aan bod,
inclusief de vesting -
van waaruit de klokken
van de Grote of
Sint-Nicolaaskerk
weergalmen. Dan klinken
bij de Vischpoort de
vrolijke geluiden van een
dansgroep die daar een
16e-eeuwse Franse
volksdans (branle des
chevaux) uitvoert.
Ook horen we oude karren
over de kinderkopjes van
de stad denderen.
Dehandel maakt deze
Hanzestad tot een
levendige plaats. Het
zich steeds herhalende
opwaartse motief uit de
inleiding krijgt hier een
nadrukkelijker karakter
en verbeeldt de
handelsgeest van de
stedelingen.Dan volgt het
langzame middendeel,
waarin de klok wordt
teruggedraaid naar de
tijd dat Elburg nog
direct aan de Zuiderzee
lag en te kampen had met
overstromingen. Na de
tweede
Sint-Marcellusvloed
(1362) en de watervloed
van 1367 werd besloten
dat de stad verplaatst
zou worden. We horen het
thema van de branle des
chevaux in mineur,
gevolgd door een
doodsklok, die de
verdronken inwoners van
de voormalige stad
herdenkt. Terug in onze
eigen tijd verklankt een
langzaam, expressief
thema in barokke stijl de
verstilde plekken in de
stad, zoals het
Feithenhof en het
Weduwenhofje. Dan keert
de levendigheid terug met
motieven uit de
inleiding, gevolgd door
een aansprekend thema
waarin het Elburg van nu
met zijn vele toeristen
doorklinkt. Plotseling is
er dan nog even een echo
uit het verleden: de
dramatiek van de
overstromingen en
oorlogen die de stad ooit
teisterden. Hieruit
vloeit het grootse
slotthema voort: de
branle des chevaux is
voor de laatste keer te
horen vanuit het
perspectief van de
historische
binnenstad.

fanfare piece
commissioned by a
Japanese ensemble, since

Senzoku Gakuen is one of
the largest and

variety of ensembles and

they have had a fanfare
orchestra, which was
started by Sotaru
Fukaishi, a euphonium
teacher who felt further
performance opportunity
wasneeded for saxhorn
instruments. Fukaishi had
loved the sound of
fanfare orchestras ever
since visiting the World
Music Contest in Kerkrade
(Holland) several years
earlier. Jan Van der
Roost was involved with
this new initiative from
the beginning,and they
were also joined by Manu
Mellaerts for certain

music department,
Professor Kazuo Tomioka,
fully supports the
ensemble and commissioned
Ostinati. The
première took place on
June 11th at Maeda Hall
inMizonokuchi (Kawasaki)
where Senzoku Gakuen is
based. The piece opens
with an impressive
timpani solo, followed by
brass and saxophone. The
rhythmical pulse remains
constant and the music is
fiery and assertive in
character. A pentatonic
melodygradually emerges
and the music loses its
vehemency and softens.
The initial percussion
ostinati subsequently
recurs and the first
section of the piece
concludes in a similar
mood to the opening. The
second movement is sweet
and melodic, opening
witha long passage for
the saxophone family in a
minor key. The same theme
then appears in the major
and is developed upon;
the music builds to a
majestic orchestral
forte, reminiscent of a
pipe organ in its
sonority. The theme
returns in the
originalminor key with a
change in instrumentation
leading the movement to a
quiet and peaceful end on
a soft E minor chord. The
finale starts with
percussion: a four-bar
pattern is repeated
several times over which
the movement’s
melodic themes
areintroduced. These
melodic elements are
varied and used in
different versions and
the ostinato idea, which
characterizes the entire
piece, is highlighted.
The theme travels through
the orchestra, appearing
on various instruments

It captures the
listener’s
attention and displays
the full range of sound

This
bittersweet song from
1967 is a real classic,
partly due to the
rendition by two queens
of soul, Dionne Warwick
and later also Aretha
Franklin. The theme was
very topical at the time:
A woman is concerned
about her husband
fighting in the Vietnam
War, and thinks about him
during her day-to-day
worries. Top arranger
Peter Kleine Schaars
created a tasteful and
carefully orchestrated
version. His arrangement
stays true to the
original colour and feel
of the song, and, as a
grade 3 piece, is still
perfectly playable for
most bands.
Deze
bitterzoete song uit 1967
is een echte klassieker,
mede doordat het door
twee soulkoninginnen,
Dionne Warwick en later
ook Aretha Franklin, werd
vertolkt. De thematiek
was destijds erg actueel:
een vrouw maakt zich
tijdens haar dagelijkse
beslommeringen zorgen om
haar man, die in de
Vietnamoorlog vecht.
Toparrangeur Peter Kleine
Schaars maakte er een
smaakvolle en zorgvuldig
georkestreerde versie
van. Zijn arrangement
blijft trouw aan de
originele kleur en feel
van de song, en is in
graad 3 toch voor de
meeste harmonieorkesten
probleemloos
speelbaar.

Das Thema war zu der

aktuell: Eine Frau macht
sich Sorgen um ihren

Top-Arrangeur Peter
Kleine Schaars schuf eine
stilvolle und
sorgfältig

This
bittersweet song from
1967 is a real classic,
partly due to the
rendition by two queens
of soul, Dionne Warwick
and later also Aretha
Franklin. The theme was
very topical at the time:
A woman is concerned
about her husband
fighting in the Vietnam
War, and thinks about him
during her day-to-day
worries. Top arranger
Peter Kleine Schaars
created a tasteful and
carefully orchestrated
version. His arrangement
stays true to the
original colour and feel
of the song, and, as a
grade 3 piece, is still
perfectly playable for
most bands.
Deze
bitterzoete song uit 1967
is een echte klassieker,
mede doordat het door
twee soulkoninginnen,
Dionne Warwick en later
ook Aretha Franklin, werd
vertolkt. De thematiek
was destijds erg actueel:
een vrouw maakt zich
tijdens haar dagelijkse
beslommeringen zorgen om
haar man, die in de
Vietnamoorlog vecht.
Toparrangeur Peter Kleine
Schaars maakte er een
smaakvolle en zorgvuldig
georkestreerde versie
van. Zijn arrangement
blijft trouw aan de
originele kleur en feel
van de song, en is in
graad 3 toch voor de
meeste harmonieorkesten
probleemloos
speelbaar.
Dieses
bittersüße Lied aus

echter Klassiker, was
teilweise auf die
Interpretationen der
beiden Queens of

auch Aretha Franklin
zurückzuführen ist.
Das Thema war zu der
damaligen Zeit sehr
aktuell: Eine Frau macht
sich Sorgen um ihren
Mann, der im Vietnamkrieg
kämpft und denkt
während ihrer
Alltagssorgen an ihn.
Top-Arrangeur Peter
Kleine Schaars schuf eine
stilvolle und
sorgfältig
orchestrierte Version.

die ursprüngliche
Klangfarbe und Stimmung
des Liedes beibehalten
und ist für die

This work is
based on the 13th Century
Dies irae (Day of
Wrath) attributed to
Thomas von Celano. Many
famous composers have
already employed this
originally Gregorian
chant in their works,
including Berlioz,
Saint-Saëns, Mahler
and Lizst. In Jan de
Haan’s Song of
David - the title of
which is taken from the
third line of the Dies
Irae text - the theme
is presented in unison
initially and then
reappears in various
guises.
Dit werk
is gebaseerd op het 13e
eeuwse Gregoriaanse
Dies Irae zoals we
dit ook kennen uit werken
van Berlioz,
Saint-Saëns, Mahler en
Liszt. Voor de titel van
dit werk waarin hij het
thema verschillende
gedaantes meegeeft,
haalde Jan de Haan zijn
inspiratie in de derde
zin van het Dies
Irae, waarin verwezen
wordt naar David.
Dieses Werk
basiert auf dem Dies
Irae (Tag des Zorns)
aus dem 13. Jahrhundert,
das Thomas von Celano
zugeschrieben wird.
Bereits mehrere
berühmte
Komponisten, wie Berlioz,
Saint-Saëns, Mahler
und Liszt, haben den
ursprünglichen
gregorianischen Choral in
ihren Werken verwendet.
In Jan de Haan Song of
David, dessen Titel
auf die dritte Textzeile
von Dies Irae
verweist, wird das Thema
zunächst einstimmig
präsentiert und
erscheint dann in
verschiedenen
Gewändern.
Ques
to brano si ispira a
Dies Irae
attribuito a Tommaso da
Celano, considerato
l’autore della
versione
de_x001E_finitiva di
questo poema scritto nel
XIII secolo. Numerosi
celebri compositori quali
Berlioz, Saint-Saëns,
Mahler e Liszt hanno
integrato passaggi di
questo canto gregoriano
nelle loro opere. In
Song Of David (il
titolo fa riferimento
alla terza strofa del
testo originale), Jan de
Haan presenta un tema
all’unisono
ripreso in seguito con
diverse dinamiche.
