Variations on a Scale was commissioned by CMV Excelsior Schraard in the Netherlands, to celebrate their 90th anniversary. The piece is in the form of six variations of different lengths but without a unifying theme. Instead, each variation includes either a melody based on the notes of a scale, or figurations based upon scales in the accompaniment.

Variations on a Scale is geschreven in opdracht van CMV Excelsior Schraard (dirigent Thom Zigterman) ter gelegenheid van het 90-jarig jubileum van het orkest in 2012. Het werk werd gepresenteerd tijdens het jubileumconcert en de première vond plaats in maart 2013.De compositie bestaat uit zes variaties van verschillende lengte, zonder een verbindend inhoudelijk thema. In plaats daarvan wordt elke variatie gekarakteriseerd door óf een melodie die is gebaseerd op de noten van een toonladder, óf een opvallende toonladderfiguur in de begeleiding.

Suite from Hymn of the Highlands schetst drie indrukwekkende muzikale beelden van de Schotse Hooglanden. Hoewel is gekozen voor een Schots thema, zijn er geen volksliedjes gebruikt. Het eerste deel, Ardross Castle, wordtgekenmerkt door solo’s voor klarinet en fagot of euphonium, voordat een doedelzakmelodie wordt ge ntroduceerd. John Blanken has created a swinging arrangement of the famous Scottish traditional tune Scotland the Brave. The usual version with bagpipes is the best known and there is a similarity in Swingin’ Kilts owing to its long, drone-like tones in the accompaniment. The theme has been rhythmically adapted but it is still easily recognisable. Swingin’ Kilts holds a challenge for every brass band. It makes demands in terms of timing and technique which give this work the bravura feel that will keep the audience as well as the musicians swinging in their seats.

John Blanken schuf eine schwungvolle Bearbeitung zu dem bekannten schottischen Volkslied Scotland the Brave. Der Bearbeiter passte das wieder erkennbare Thema dem Swing-Stil an und auch die langen, Bordun ähnlichen Töne erinnern an das beliebte Dudelsackstück. Swingin' Kilts ist eine Herausforderung für jede Formation. Es stellt gewisse Anforderungen an Timing und Technik, die diesem Werk die Bravour verleihen, welche das Publikum ebenso wie die Musiker in Schwung versetzen wird.

Dances & Sonnets is een ontmoeting tussen dans- en dichtkunst uit de negentiende eeuw. Centraal in dit werk staan de dansen die toen geliefd waren in de vissersdorpen langs de Noordzeekusten en rondom de Zuiderzee. Gedichtenwisselen deze dansen af. Bedoeling is dat een of meerdere lezers de gedichten voorlezen, waarbij het orkest hen begeleidt met zachte, gedragen muziek. Naast de gedichten die de componist voorstelt, kunt u natuurlijk ook zelf gedichtenof sonnetten kiezen. Maar ook zonder sprekers komt dit werk voortreffelijk tot zijn recht.

Dances & Sonnets ist ein Werk, in dem sich Tanz und Dichtkunst des 19. Jahrhunderts treffen. Im Mittelpunkt des Werkes stehen Tänze, die damals in den Fischereihäfen längs der niederländischen Nordseeküste und der ehemaligen Zuiderzee populär waren. Im Werk wechseln sie sich mit einer Reihe von Gedichten ab, welche von einem oder mehreren Vorlesern deklamiert werden können. Begleitet werden die Gedichte von leise und getragen gespielter Musik des Blasorchesters. Für die Aufführung von Dances & Sonnets können die vom Komponisten vorgeschlagenen oder andere Sonette oder Gedichte in jeder beliebigen Sprache ausgesucht werden. Dreaming of love. This is the theme of the folksong on which the composition was based. Its characteristic melody inspired Jacob de Haan to this instrumental romance with a transparent structure consisting of an introduction, the folk-melody, a development of the theme, the folk-melody accompanied by ornamental triplets followed by the final bars.

Ein romantisches Volkslied inspirierte Jacob de Haan dazu, German Love Song zu komponieren, eine instrumentale Romanze in der typischen ABA-Form. Die charakteristische Melodie des Volksliedes erklingt in der Sopranstimme, melodisch unterlegt von dem Tenorregister. Teil B entsteht aus diesem melodischen Gegenstück und er entwickelt sich nach einer kurzen Durchführung zu einem fantastischen Höhepunkt. Philip Sparke's Sinfonietta No. 4 is comprised of three parts that are played as an uninterrupted whole. The _x001F_first movement begins with a lyrical fugato passage, framing a brisker and more rhythmical middle section. The second movement is slower and contains a long and expressive euphonium solo. The third movement is a salute to the sponsor of this commission: various percussion instruments conjure up sounds reminiscent of a carpenter's workshop, accompanied by a unison orchestral passage in a scat style.

Sinfonie tta No. 4 bestaat uit drie in elkaar overlopende delen. Het eerste deel bestaat uit een lyrische fugato dat overgaat in een sneller en ritmisch gedeelte. In het tweede, trage deel, komt een prachtige euphoniumsolo aan bod. Het derde deel bevat een muzikale knipoog naar de opdrachtgever van het werk waarin de componist diverse slagwerk instrumenten geluiden na laat bootsen die uit een timmermanswekplaats lijken te komen.

Sinf onietta Ndeg 4 est une oeuvre en trois mouvements qui s'enchainent sans interruption. Le premier mouvement decrit le village de Stramproy. Il s'ouvre avec un passage lyrique en style fugue qui enserre un passage central plus rapide et plus rythme. Dans le second mouvement, la musique est plus apaisee. Un magni_x001C_fique solo d'euphonium traverse la trame musicale. Le troisieme et dernier mouvement illustre les activites de l'entreprise commanditaire de l'oeuvre. On entend les bruits de l'atelier dans un passage pour multi-percussions, qui ornemente une texture orchestrale a l'unisson, proche du scat.

Jacob de Haan was commissioned to compose this concert piece by the St. Peters Wind Symphony from Brisbane, Australia. Ross Roy is the monumental late 19th century villa where St. Peters Lutheran College was founded in 1945. The villa has always remained the school symbol. In this composition, Jacob de Haan sees the Ross Roy as a metaphor for the years spent at school (a monument in time), where one's personality is formed. So, the opening theme the artist calls the Ross Roy theme initially has monumental characteristics.The rhythmic motion, which strides along in the lower register and percussion at the beginning of the next section is typical of Tempo di Marcia. Thismovement, accompanied by repetitions of sound, is a metaphor for the structure and discipline in school. This is the introduction to a march theme, symbolic of passing through the classes up to the final examinations.Then, the Ross Roy theme is dealt with again, now in a playful, humorous variation. As if the composer is saying there should also be time for a smile in school. The same theme can be heard in major key and a slower tempo in the following section, expressing pride and self-confidence. This is also the introduction to the expressive middle section that represents love, friendship and understanding.We then return to the march theme in a slightly altered construction. The oriental sounds, constituting the modulation to the final theme, are symbols of the diversity of cultures in the school. The characteristic final theme first sounds solemn, but turns into a festive apotheosis. It is no coincidence that the final cadence is reminiscent of the close to a traditional overture, for the school years can be considered the overture to the rest of one's life. The premiere of Ross Roy was conducted by Jacob de Haan in Brisbane, on August 22, 1997.

Ainsi, le thème initial se développe-t-il sur un motif rythmique imposant qui alterne entre les instruments graves et la batterie. Ce motif symbolise l’autorité et le cadre structuré de l’école. On retrouve ce thème plusieurs reprises et notamment sousune forme humoristique et espiègle : nous découvrons les bons côtés de l’école, la joie des élèves, les sentiments de fierté, d’amour et d’amitié. Autre élément thématique, une marche qui symbolise la progression des élèves dans leur cursus pour arriver leurs examens de fin d'étude. » En guise de conclusion, Jacob de Haan nous offre un thème grandiose qui s’élargit en apothéose.
