For Three
Aspects of Kurt Weill
Peter Kleine Schaars took
inspiration from the
three periods that
characterise the life of
Weill - he
successivelylived in
Berlin, Paris and New
York. One theme is used
to create threetotally
different atmospheres, a
protest march against the
fascists inBerlin, a
French Musette (valse de
Paris) and an American
big bandstyle Broadway
orchestra. Let this great
work show the versatility
ofyour concert band!

Weill, der unter anderem
mit seiner Musik zur

berühmt wurde, lebte
nacheinander in Berlin,

Three Aspects of Kurt
Weill weist ein Thema
auf, das dementsprechend
in drei völlig
unterschiedlichen
Stimmungen erscheint: als
Protestmarsch gegen die
Faschisten in Berlin, als

Big- Band-Stil. Beweisen

Met deze
compositie geeft Jan Van
der Roost een muzikaal
sfeerbeeld van
Stonehenge: een beroemde
historische Engelse
stenencirkel die al
zo’n 3500 jaar
bestaat. Hoewel er geen
concreet verhaal aan ten
grondslag ligt en er geen
duidelijkscenario is
gebruikt, verklankt
Stonehenge het
mysterie en de grootsheid
van het eeuwenoude
geheimzinnige monument op
voortreffelijke wijze.
Gezongen elementen
bevorderen de mythische
sfeer.

they were a matter of
life and death and were

of the Emperor: Sometimes
a wounded gladiator could
be fortunate, depending
on the mercy of the
audience. Waving one’s
handkerchief meant mercy,
a turned-down thumb meant
no pardon. The Emperor
had the right to take the
final decision, but he
usually complied with the

mainly selected among

and his overtures (1812

Tchaikovsky died of

His Slavonic
March is a popular
concert piece for

arranged the theme and
created a contemporary

Tchaikovsky once said to
an unsatisfied teacher:
‘I will be a great

Volgens
zijn leraren was Pjotr
Iljitsj Tsjaikovski
(1840-1893) niet
bijzonder begaafd. Zijn
speciale talenten werden
alleen erkend in 1865,
toen hij enkele jaren had

vanzijn zes symfonieën,
soloconcerten (viool en
piano), balletten (De
Notenkraker, Het
Zwanenmeer), en zijn
ouvertures (1812 en Romeo
en Juliette). In 1893
is Tsjaikovski gestorven
aan cholera na het
drinken van een glas van
besmetwater.
Zijn
Slavische Mars is een
populair concertwerk voor
symfonie orkest.
David Well maakte een
mooi arrangement van het
thema en creëerde een
mars in een hedendaagse
rock stijl.
Tchaikovsky zei ooittegen
een ontevreden leraar:
'Ik zal een groot
componist zijn binnen 10
jaar tijd'.

symphonic orchestra that
is still frequently
performed in concert
halls. David Well
arranged the theme and
created a contemporary
march in rock
style.
Tchaikovsky once said to
an unsatisfied teacher:
‘I will be a great
composer within 10 years
time.’
Volgens
zijn leraren was Pjotr
Iljitsj Tsjaikovski
(1840-1893) niet
bijzonder begaafd. Zijn
speciale talenten werden
alleen erkend in 1865,
toen hij enkele jaren had
gewerkt voor het
ministerie van
Financiën. In 1866
werd hijbenoemd tot
docent aan het
Conservatorium en legde
zich toe op het
componeren. Zijn oeuvre
is vrij uitgebreid en
veel van zijn composities
krijgen een hoge ranking
op de internationale
lijst van klassieke
muziek, met inbegrip
vanzijn zes symfonieën,
soloconcerten (viool en
piano), balletten (De
Notenkraker, Het
Zwanenmeer), en zijn
ouvertures (1812 en Romeo
en Juliette). In 1893
is Tsjaikovski gestorven
aan cholera na het
drinken van een glas van
besmetwater.
Zijn
Slavische Mars is een
populair concertwerk voor
symfonie orkest.
David Well maakte een
mooi arrangement van het
thema en creëerde een
mars in een hedendaagse
rock stijl.
Tchaikovsky zei ooittegen
een ontevreden leraar:
'Ik zal een groot
componist zijn binnen 10
jaar tijd'.

In
English-speaking
countries ‘Away in a
Manger’ is one of the
first Christmas songs to
be taught to little
children. It is a moving
song with simple words,
which makes it easy to
understand.
The
song is also known as
‘Luther’s Cradle
Hymn’. This suggests
that Martin Luther was
the author of the lyrics.
According to researchers,
however, this is a
misconception the author
is unknown. In
England ‘Away in a
Manger’ is sung to a
different melody than in
the USA, for example. The
‘English’ melody was
composed by W.J.
Kirkpatrick. Andrew
Mackereth made a touching
arrangement of the
‘English’ melody,
which suits the tender
lyrics
perfectly.
In
Engelstalige landen is
‘Away in a Manger’
een van de eerste
kerstliedjes dat de
kinderen geleerd wordt.
Het is een gevoelig lied
met een eenvoudige en
daarom aansprekende
tekst.
Het lied
staat ook wel bekend als
‘Luther’sCradle
Hymn’. Dit suggereert
dat Martin Luther de
schrijver van de tekst
is. Volgens onderzoekers
is dit een misvatting en
is de auteur
onbekend. In Engeland
wordt ‘Away in a
Manger’ op een andere
melodie gezongen danin
bijv. in de USA. De
‘Engelse’ melodie is
gecomponeerd door W.J.
Kirkpatrick. Andrew
Mackereth maakte een
gevoelige bewerking van
de ‘Engelse’ melodie,
die prima aansluit bij de
tedere tekst.

This hymn was
commissioned by
“Antwerpen
93â€. And this city,
on the banks of the river
Schelde has been
nominated “Cultural
Capital of Europeâ€
for 1993. The work-group
“animatieâ€
took the initiative and
commissioned a hymn,
which -as the finale to a
grand open-air event on
27th March- was
premièred by hundreds
of musicians from all
over Europe. Philippe
Langlet (France) was the
conductor at this
majestic
occasion.Musically
speaking the piece can no
doubt be labeled easy.
Indeed it is meant to
represent a hymn,
playable by all in
different instrumental
combinations.
Consequently a variable
instrumentation was
chosen and a type of
music, which by native is
easily accessible
anduncomplicated.The
conductor is free -in the
instrumentation- to score
this piece according to
his own taste. It is
perhaps advisable to use
the sharp brass in the
forte parts, in order to
make the range in the
sound of the orchestra as
colouful as possible. The
percussion parts are not
absolutely essential, so
that the hymn can also be
performed without
percussion.

(1932-2001). De vele
werken van Van der Velde
zijn meestal gebaseerd op
ervaringen die hij opdeed
tijdens zijn werk als
journalist of uit
dehistorie van zijn eigen
leefomgeving (Z.O.
Friesland). De tweede
wereldoorlog is een vaak
terugkerend thema. De
hoofdfiguren zijn niet
zelden eenlingen. Ze
kenmerken zich door het
feit dat ze zich niet het
meeste aantrekken van de
geldenderegels die in de
‘normale’
maatschappij in acht
worden genomen. De
hoofdfiguur uit Feroaring

Luchtigheid’ (in de
volksmond Durk Snoad),
voldoet volledig aan deze
omschrijving.
Jan

muzikalevertelling
gecomponeerd, waarin hij
gebruik maakt van een

Het
werk begint met het
‘Durk-motief’.
Levenslustig en
onbekommerd stapt Durk
door het leven, genietend
van de dingen die het
leven voor hem in petto
heeft. Plotseling is
het tijd voor hetapp?l
(maat 24), Durk blaast op
een oude, gedeukte bugel
een soort reveille. Hij
ziet zeven kinderen
verschijnen maar bedenkt
dat het er toch meer
zouden moeten zijn. Na
een wat nadrukkelijker
geblazen reveille telt
hij tien telgen. Dit
stelt hemtevreden. Na
het ochtendritueel trekt
hij de natuur in (maat
28). Hij geniet van de
wind, de zon en de rust
en laat de dingen op zich
afkomen zoals ze zich
aandienen. Dat Durk uit
de natuur ook geldelijk
gewin haalt hoort men in
de nachtelijkestrooptocht
(maat 73). Als hij langs
zijn opgezette vallen
gaat blijft hij op zijn
hoede voor de
veldwachter. Deze ligt
echter als een wolf op de
loer en ontdekt Durk. Hij
blaast op zijn fluit
(maat 111) en er ontstaat
een achtervolging (maat
116).De sterke arm is
langer dan Durk denkt en
hij wordt uiteindelijk in
de kraag gevat. Na
tussenkomst van een
maatschappelijk werkster
wordt Durk tewerkgesteld
bij Philips en verhuist
hij naar een
nieuwbouwwoning in
Drachten (maat 149).
Hijvoelt zich in zijn
nieuwe huis en op het
werk niet op zijn gemak
en verlangt terug naar
zijn oude bestaan (maat
157). Tegen alle
bureaucratie in besluit
hij terug te gaan naar
zijn oude woning op de
Zandlaan. Zelfs de
burgemeester komt eraan
tepas om deze
eigenzinnige Fries om te
praten maar helaas, het
heeft geen zin. Als hij
krijgt te horen dat hij
mag blijven wonen waar
hij heel zijn leven al
heeft doorgebracht is hij
een gelukkig man (maat
230). Eind goed, al
goed.
