This major
concert work cosists o
five movements.1st
movement: La Laguna del
ShimbeSituated high up in
the Andes mountains in
Northern Peru are the
Huaringas, a group of
lagoons in isolated and
mysterious surroundings.
The water has healing
powersand for centuries
traditional healers have
settled there in small
villages. From far the
sick come to the
Huaringas to be treated
in nightly rituals, in
which the hallucinating
juice of the San Pedro
cactus gives the prophet
a look inside hispatient.
The biggest lagoon is the
“Laguna del
Shimbeâ€, one of the
countless wells of the
immense Amazon stream.2nd
movement: Los
AguarunasFurther
downstream in Northern
Peru we come across the
rain tribe of Los
Aguarunas. It’s a
proud, beautiful
andindependent race,
which has never succumbed
to domination, not even
from the Incas. They live
from everything the
forest has to offer:
fish, fruit, plants, ...
. They also grow some
crops and live as
semi-nomads. They take
their fate into their
ownhands and after having
made contact with modern
civilisation, they have
integrated new elements
into their lives without
betraying their own
ways.3rd movement:
MekaronMekaron is an
Indian word meaning
“pictureâ€,
“soulâ€,
“essenceâ€.
The Indians are
theorigina inhabitants of
the Amazon region. They
either live in one place
as a group or move around
a large region. They all
have their own political
system, their own
language and an intense
social life. At the same
time they are master of
music andmedicine.
“Everywhere the
white man goes, he leaves
a wilderness behind
himâ€, wrote the
North American Indian
leader Seatl in 1885. As
a result of these
contacts with the whites,
the disruption of most
Indian societies began.
(In this century alone,80
tribes have vanished
completely).4th movement:
KêêtuajêThis is
the name of the
initiating ceremony of
the Krahô tribe in the
Brazilian state of Goias,
in which young boys and
girls enter adult life.
They are cleansed with
water, painted with
redpaint and covered with
feathers, after which the
ritual dance holds the
entire tribe
spell-bound.5th movement:
Paulino FaiakanIn 1988
the Indian chiefs Faiakan
and Raoni Kaiapo came to
Europe to protest against
the building of the
Altamira dam inBrazil. As
a result of the dam the
Indians would be driven
from their traditional
land and enormous
artificial would be
created. The project was
supported financially by,
amongst others, the
European Community. In
February 1989 the Indian
tribesaround Altamira
held a protest march for
the first time in their
history together. Amongst
other things they paid
tribute tot Chico Mendez,
who, murdered in 1988,
was the leader of the
rubber syndicate and a
fierce opponent of the
destruction of
theBrazilian rain forest.
Brazilian and world
opinion was awakened. The
building of the dam was
-albeit temporarily -
stopped.

Jacob de Haan
was commissioned to
compose this concert
piece by the St. Peters
Wind Symphony from
Brisbane, Australia. Ross
Roy is the monumental
late 19th century villa
where St. Peters Lutheran
College was founded in
1945. The villa has
always remained the
school symbol. In this
composition, Jacob de
Haan sees the Ross Roy as
a metaphor for the years
spent at school (a
monument in time), where
one's personality is
formed. So, the opening
theme the artist calls
the Ross Roy theme
initially has monumental
characteristics.The
rhythmic motion, which
strides along in the
lower register and
percussion at the
beginning of the next
section is typical of
Tempo di Marcia.
Thismovement, accompanied
by repetitions of sound,
is a metaphor for the
structure and discipline
in school. This is the
introduction to a march
theme, symbolic of
passing through the
classes up to the final
examinations.Then, the
Ross Roy theme is dealt
with again, now in a
playful, humorous
variation. As if the
composer is saying there
should also be time for a
smile in school. The same
theme can be heard in
major key and a slower
tempo in the following
section, expressing pride
and self-confidence. This
is also the introduction
to the expressive middle
section that represents
love, friendship and
understanding.We then
return to the march theme
in a slightly altered
construction. The
oriental sounds,
constituting the
modulation to the final
theme, are symbols of the
diversity of cultures in
the school. The
characteristic final
theme first sounds
solemn, but turns into a
festive apotheosis. It is
no coincidence that the
final cadence is
reminiscent of the close
to a traditional
overture, for the school
years can be considered
the overture to the rest
of one's life. The
premiere of Ross Roy was
conducted by Jacob de
Haan in Brisbane, on
August 22, 1997.

The Golden
Age is a programmatic
composition in four
movements. I
Overture For the
Netherlands, the
seventeenth century was a
period of great
flourishing in the fields
of economy, culture and
politics; thus it is
called the Golden Age.
Overseas trade boomed,
and the Dutch East India
Company (known as the VOC
by the Dutch) was founded
and expanded to become a
powerful -and, at the
time - modern enterprise.
II ¡Adiós
españoles!(Farewel
l, Spaniards!) In 1567,
the Spanish army invaded,
led by the Duke of Alva.
There was a fierce
resistance against the
Spanish tyranny; toward
the end of the sixteenth
century, the Dutch
proclaimed theRepublic.
However, the Spanish
continued the war. Only
with the Treaty of
Münster in 1648 did
the Dutch get their much
sought-after
independence. This was
also the end of the
Eighty Years’ War.
III Rembrandt’s
Night WatchThe field
of culture, particularly
literature, painting,
sculpture, architecture,
the art of printing, and
cartography developed
fast. It was in the
Golden Age that the
celebrated painter
Rembrandt van Rijn
created his famous Night
Watch. IV The
Admiral Overseas
trade entailed the
colonization of large
areas in Asia, from where
precious products that
yielded lots of money
were brought in.
Surrounding countries
were also involved in
such practices.
Colonizers poached on
each other’s
territories in the
literal and figurative
sense - in this context
the Anglo-Dutch Sea Wars
are legendary. The fourth
movement starts with the
English patriotic song
Rule Britannia, after
which the Dutch Admiral
Michiel de Ruyter makes
the English change their
tune; one can even hear
the roaring of cannons.
When the smoke of battle
has cleared, a small
fragment of a Dutch song
about Michiel de Ruyter
appears, followed by a
fitting closing.

‘Jealousy’
has been named after John
Donne’s poem of
the same name. This
English poet (1572-1631)
wrote an entire series of
elegies, each with its
own theme. Jealousy can
trigger various emotions,
ranging from
disappointment, grief, or
regret, to madness and
anger. All these emotions
have been incorporated
into this composition.
Jacob de Haan was
inspired by three
different works of art: a
poem (the aforementioned
poem by John Donne), a
painting by the Norwegian
painter Edvard Munch
(Jealousy in the Garden)
and an old French chanson
about jealousy (Je ne
l’ose dire) by the
sixteenth-century French
composer Pierre Certon.
The music refers
repeatedly to thischanson
- sometimes through key
notes from the melody
that serve as the
starting point for new,
isolated themes and
sometimes through
quotations of the
original version.

This
musical fantasy depicts
the history of the Dutch
fortified town of Elburg.
The work begins with an
atmospheric medieval
picture of the Convent of
St Agnes, the nunnery
that was built in the
first half of the 15th
century. We hear the
sound of the convent
bells together with an
upward motif, which will
reappear later in the
work. Next, the rest of
Elburg is featured,
including the fortress -
from which the bells of
the Sint-Nicolaaskerk
(Saint Nicholas Church)
are ringing. Then,
cheerful sounds can be
heard at the Vischpoort
(Fish Gate), where a
dancing group is
performing a 16th century
French folk dance (a
branle des chevaux). We
also hear old wagons
rumbling over the
town’scobble
stones. Trade made this
Hanseatic town a lively
place. The repetitive
upward motif first heard
in the introduction now
develops into a more
distinct feature,
reflecting the mercantile
spirit of the town
residents.Then follows
the slow middle movement,
in which the clock has
been turned back to the
time when Elburg was
still lying on the
Zuiderzee (which was a
bay of the North Sea),
and was struggling with
floods. After the second
St. Marcellus Flood
(1362) and the water
flood of 1367 it was
decided that the town
would be relocated. We
now hear the theme of
branle des chevaux in a
minor key, followed by a
death bell sounding in
remembrance of the
drowned citizens of the
former town. Back in our
own time, a slow,
expressive theme in
Baroque style mirrors
Elburg’s tranquil
places, such as the
Feithenhof (Feithen
Court) and the
Weduwenhofje (Widow
Court). Then the bustle
returns with motifs from
the introduction,
followed by an attractive
theme in which
present-day Elburg is
portrayed with its many
tourists. Now, suddenly,
there is an echo from the
past, depicting the
dramatic floods and wars
that once plagued the
town. This leads to the
grand closing theme:
branle des chevaux
is heard for a final time
from the perspective of
the historic town centre.
Deze muzikale
fantasie vertelt de
geschiedenis van de
Nederlandse vestingstad
Elburg. Het werk begint
met een middeleeuws
sfeerbeeld vanuit het
Agnietenklooster, het
nonnenklooster dat in de
eerste helft van de 15e
eeuw werd gebouwd. We
horen de kloosterklok
samen met een opwaarts
motief, dat ook later in
het werk terugkomt.
Vervolgens komt de rest
van Elburg aan bod,
inclusief de vesting -
van waaruit de klokken
van de Grote of
Sint-Nicolaaskerk
weergalmen. Dan klinken
bij de Vischpoort de
vrolijke geluiden van een
dansgroep die daar een
16e-eeuwse Franse
volksdans (branle des
chevaux) uitvoert.
Ook horen we oude karren
over de kinderkopjes van
de stad denderen.
Dehandel maakt deze
Hanzestad tot een
levendige plaats. Het
zich steeds herhalende
opwaartse motief uit de
inleiding krijgt hier een
nadrukkelijker karakter
en verbeeldt de
handelsgeest van de
stedelingen.Dan volgt het
langzame middendeel,
waarin de klok wordt
teruggedraaid naar de
tijd dat Elburg nog
direct aan de Zuiderzee
lag en te kampen had met
overstromingen. Na de
tweede
Sint-Marcellusvloed
(1362) en de watervloed
van 1367 werd besloten
dat de stad verplaatst
zou worden. We horen het
thema van de branle des
chevaux in mineur,
gevolgd door een
doodsklok, die de
verdronken inwoners van
de voormalige stad
herdenkt. Terug in onze
eigen tijd verklankt een
langzaam, expressief
thema in barokke stijl de
verstilde plekken in de
stad, zoals het
Feithenhof en het
Weduwenhofje. Dan keert
de levendigheid terug met
motieven uit de
inleiding, gevolgd door
een aansprekend thema
waarin het Elburg van nu
met zijn vele toeristen
doorklinkt. Plotseling is
er dan nog even een echo
uit het verleden: de
dramatiek van de
overstromingen en
oorlogen die de stad ooit
teisterden. Hieruit
vloeit het grootse
slotthema voort: de
branle des chevaux is
voor de laatste keer te
horen vanuit het
perspectief van de
historische
binnenstad.

This work is
based on the 13th Century
Dies irae (Day of
Wrath) attributed to
Thomas von Celano. Many
famous composers have
already employed this
originally Gregorian
chant in their works,
including Berlioz,
Saint-Saëns, Mahler
and Lizst. In Jan de
Haan’s Song of
David - the title of
which is taken from the
third line of the Dies
Irae text - the theme
is presented in unison
initially and then
reappears in various
guises.
Dit werk
is gebaseerd op het 13e
eeuwse Gregoriaanse
Dies Irae zoals we
dit ook kennen uit werken
van Berlioz,
Saint-Saëns, Mahler en
Liszt. Voor de titel van
dit werk waarin hij het
thema verschillende
gedaantes meegeeft,
haalde Jan de Haan zijn
inspiratie in de derde
zin van het Dies
Irae, waarin verwezen
wordt naar David.
