It may be
surprising to see a
fanfare piece
commissioned by a
Japanese ensemble, since
fanfare orchestras are
typically found in
Belgium, Holland and
Luxembourg, and also
France and Switzerland.
Senzoku Gakuen is one of
the largest and
mostprestigious music
universities in Japan,
and home to a wide
variety of ensembles and
orchestras. Since 2006
they have had a fanfare
orchestra, which was
started by Sotaru
Fukaishi, a euphonium
teacher who felt further
performance opportunity
wasneeded for saxhorn
instruments. Fukaishi had
loved the sound of
fanfare orchestras ever
since visiting the World
Music Contest in Kerkrade
(Holland) several years
earlier. Jan Van der
Roost was involved with
this new initiative from
the beginning,and they
were also joined by Manu
Mellaerts for certain
projects. The Dean of the
music department,
Professor Kazuo Tomioka,
fully supports the
ensemble and commissioned
Ostinati. The
première took place on
June 11th at Maeda Hall
inMizonokuchi (Kawasaki)
where Senzoku Gakuen is
based. The piece opens
with an impressive
timpani solo, followed by
brass and saxophone. The
rhythmical pulse remains
constant and the music is
fiery and assertive in
character. A pentatonic
melodygradually emerges
and the music loses its
vehemency and softens.
The initial percussion
ostinati subsequently
recurs and the first
section of the piece
concludes in a similar
mood to the opening. The
second movement is sweet
and melodic, opening
witha long passage for
the saxophone family in a
minor key. The same theme
then appears in the major
and is developed upon;
the music builds to a
majestic orchestral
forte, reminiscent of a
pipe organ in its
sonority. The theme
returns in the
originalminor key with a
change in instrumentation
leading the movement to a
quiet and peaceful end on
a soft E minor chord. The
finale starts with
percussion: a four-bar
pattern is repeated
several times over which
the movement’s
melodic themes
areintroduced. These
melodic elements are
varied and used in
different versions and
the ostinato idea, which
characterizes the entire
piece, is highlighted.
The theme travels through
the orchestra, appearing
on various instruments
and in variousregisters.
It captures the
listener’s
attention and displays
the full range of sound
and colour within the
fanfare
orchestra.
Het is
misschien verrassend dat
dit fanfarewerk is
geschreven in opdracht
van een Japans ensemble,
aangezien fanfareorkesten
vooral te vinden zijn in
België, Nederland en
Luxemburg, en ook wel in
Frankrijk en Zwitserland.

mogelijkheden moesten
komen voor optredens met
saxhoorninstrumenten.
Fukaishi had enkele jaren

ensemble en gaf de
opdracht tot het
schrijven van
Ostinati. De
première vond plaats
op 11 juni in de Maeda
Hall in Mizonokuchi
(Kawasaki), waar Senzoku
Gakuen is gevestigd. Het
werk begint met een
indrukwekkendepaukensolo,
gevolgd door koper en
saxofoon. De ritmische
puls blijft constant, en
de aard van de muziek is
vurig en krachtig.
Geleidelijk komt er een
pentatonische melodie
naar voren en wordt de
muziek minder heftig, ze
wordtzachter van
karakter. De
aanvankelijke ostinati in
het slagwerk verschijnen
dan opnieuw, waarna het
eerste deel van het werk
eindigt in dezelfde sfeer
als waarmee het begon.
Het tweede deel is
lieflijk en melodisch.
Het opentmet een lange
passage voor de saxofoons
in een mineurtoonsoort.
Dan klinkt hetzelfde
thema in majeur en daar
wordt op voortgeborduurd:
de muziek ontwikkelt zich
tot een majestueus

Der zweite Satz ist

Dann erscheint das
gleiche Thema in Dur und
durchläuft eine
Entwicklung; die Musik
baut sich zu einem

Klangfülle an eine

kehrt das Thema in seiner

reading an article about
a branch of Chinese

exact translation but can
mean, for example,
five elements, five
phases or five
states of change. It
is central to all
elements of Chinese
thought, including
science, philosophy,
medicine andastrology,
and in simple terms tries
to create various cyclic
relationships between
five elements in all
walks of life.An example
is: Earth - Metal - Water
- Wood - Fire - (Earth)
etc. where (in one cycle)
earth bears metal, metal
changes to liquid (water)
when heated, water helps
trees grow, wood burns to
create fire, fire
produces ash (earth) and
the cycle continues.I was
particularly interested
in the cycle of
emotions:- Meditation -
Sorrow - Fear - Anger -
Joy - (Meditation) etc.
and thought this cyclic
principle would provide
an effective emotional
journey for a piece of
music. So Five States
of Change has five
equal sections which
loosely characterise this
emotional cycle. I have
tried to make the music
grow organically, with
minimal repetition, and
each movement evolves
from the musical elements
at the end of the
previous one, with the
opening material
appearing, transformed,
at the end of the piece
to complete the cycle.

L’idea
di comporre questo brano
è venuta a Philip

cicli di cinque elementi,
fasi e stadi di
cambiamento. A Sparke
interessavano in

tematicamente intrecciate

Sparke leggendo un
articolo sulla filosofi a
cinese che si basa su
cicli di cinque elementi,
fasi e stadi di
cambiamento. A Sparke
interessavano in
particolare il flusso dei
sentimenti come la
meditazione, il lutto, la
paura, la rabbia e la
gioia. A partire da
questi elementi ha
composto un
impressionante
“viaggioâ€
musicale suddiviso in
cinque sezioni,
tematicamente intrecciate
tra loro, quasi a voler
formare un cerchio.

On a war
memorial in the Dutch
village of Wons is
engraved a list of names
to honour the fallen in
World War II. This is the
basis for the name of
this piece. However, this
composition was written
for everyone who has made
Wons what it is today: a
pretty place near to Lake
IJssel with a
comfortable way of life.
The piece begins with a
celebratory introduction
in which the village is
presented to the
listener. There follows a
delightful rhythmic and
high-tempo theme that
reflects the happiness,
innocence and carefree
atmosphere before the
war. Now we hear a moody,
fragmented theme
depicting soldiers
shooting. This is brought
to a close with dissonant
clusters of
sound,intoning the
dreadful tragedy of the
war. The ensuing quiet
gives way to a calm
middle section in a minor
key that portrays both
frustration and
consolation. The fast
tempo of the beginning
returns, this time in the
form of a victory march.
We hear freedom being
celebrated. We hear the
previous happy, innocent
and carefree themes, too.
There follows a festive,
martial theme, a tribute
to the village, before
the piece closes with
sounds of celebration.
Op de gedenksteen

naar deze lijst. Deze
compositie is echter
tevens geschreven voor
alle mensen die Wons
hebben gemaakt tot wat
het nu is: een prachtig
dorpje vlak bij het
IJsselmeer waar het
prettig toeven is. De
compositie begint met een
statige inleiding, waarin
het dorp zich presenteert
aan de luisteraar. Dan
klinkt een aansprekend
ritmisch thema in een
snel tempo dat de
vrolijkheid,
onbevangenheid en
onbezorgdheid van voor de
oorlog uitstraalt. Dit
gaat over in een melodie
in mineur, die het
naderendeoorlogsgevaar
aankondigt. Dan is er een
grillig thema met stops
waarin het schieten van
de soldaten te horen is.
Dit eindigt in enkele
dissonante clusters die
het tragische dieptepunt
van de oorlog
accentueren. De
daaropvolgende stilte
lost op in een gedragen
middendeel in mineur
waaruit enerzijds
verdriet en anderzijds
troost spreekt. Dan komt
het snelle tempo van het
begin weer terug, ditmaal
in de vorm van een
vreugdemars. De vrijheid
wordt gevierd. Ook het
thema van de vrolijkheid,
onbevangenheid en
onbezorgdheid is weer te
horen. Er volgt nu een
statig martiaal thema,
een eerbetoon aan het
dorp, waarna het werk
wordt afgesloten met
feestelijke klanken.

This
musical fantasy depicts
the history of the Dutch
fortified town of Elburg.
The work begins with an
atmospheric medieval
picture of the Convent of
St Agnes, the nunnery
that was built in the
first half of the 15th
century. We hear the
sound of the convent
bells together with an
upward motif, which will
reappear later in the
work. Next, the rest of
Elburg is featured,
including the fortress -
from which the bells of
the Sint-Nicolaaskerk
(Saint Nicholas Church)
are ringing. Then,
cheerful sounds can be
heard at the Vischpoort
(Fish Gate), where a
dancing group is
performing a 16th century
French folk dance (a
branle des chevaux). We
also hear old wagons
rumbling over the
town’scobble
stones. Trade made this
Hanseatic town a lively
place. The repetitive
upward motif first heard
in the introduction now
develops into a more
distinct feature,
reflecting the mercantile
spirit of the town
residents.Then follows
the slow middle movement,
in which the clock has
been turned back to the
time when Elburg was
still lying on the
Zuiderzee (which was a
bay of the North Sea),
and was struggling with
floods. After the second
St. Marcellus Flood
(1362) and the water
flood of 1367 it was
decided that the town
would be relocated. We
now hear the theme of
branle des chevaux in a
minor key, followed by a
death bell sounding in
remembrance of the
drowned citizens of the
former town. Back in our
own time, a slow,
expressive theme in
Baroque style mirrors
Elburg’s tranquil
places, such as the
Feithenhof (Feithen
Court) and the
Weduwenhofje (Widow
Court). Then the bustle
returns with motifs from
the introduction,
followed by an attractive
theme in which
present-day Elburg is
portrayed with its many
tourists. Now, suddenly,
there is an echo from the
past, depicting the
dramatic floods and wars
that once plagued the
town. This leads to the
grand closing theme:
branle des chevaux
is heard for a final time
from the perspective of
the historic town centre.
Deze muzikale
fantasie vertelt de
geschiedenis van de
Nederlandse vestingstad
Elburg. Het werk begint
met een middeleeuws
sfeerbeeld vanuit het
Agnietenklooster, het
nonnenklooster dat in de
eerste helft van de 15e
eeuw werd gebouwd. We
horen de kloosterklok
samen met een opwaarts
motief, dat ook later in
het werk terugkomt.
Vervolgens komt de rest
van Elburg aan bod,
inclusief de vesting -
van waaruit de klokken
van de Grote of
Sint-Nicolaaskerk
weergalmen. Dan klinken
bij de Vischpoort de
vrolijke geluiden van een
dansgroep die daar een
16e-eeuwse Franse
volksdans (branle des
chevaux) uitvoert.
Ook horen we oude karren
over de kinderkopjes van
de stad denderen.
Dehandel maakt deze
Hanzestad tot een
levendige plaats. Het
zich steeds herhalende
opwaartse motief uit de
inleiding krijgt hier een
nadrukkelijker karakter
en verbeeldt de
handelsgeest van de
stedelingen.Dan volgt het
langzame middendeel,
waarin de klok wordt
teruggedraaid naar de
tijd dat Elburg nog
direct aan de Zuiderzee
lag en te kampen had met
overstromingen. Na de
tweede
Sint-Marcellusvloed
(1362) en de watervloed
van 1367 werd besloten
dat de stad verplaatst
zou worden. We horen het
thema van de branle des
chevaux in mineur,
gevolgd door een
doodsklok, die de
verdronken inwoners van
de voormalige stad
herdenkt. Terug in onze
eigen tijd verklankt een
langzaam, expressief
thema in barokke stijl de
verstilde plekken in de
stad, zoals het
Feithenhof en het
Weduwenhofje. Dan keert
de levendigheid terug met
motieven uit de
inleiding, gevolgd door
een aansprekend thema
waarin het Elburg van nu
met zijn vele toeristen
doorklinkt. Plotseling is
er dan nog even een echo
uit het verleden: de
dramatiek van de
overstromingen en
oorlogen die de stad ooit
teisterden. Hieruit
vloeit het grootse
slotthema voort: de
branle des chevaux is
voor de laatste keer te
horen vanuit het
perspectief van de
historische
binnenstad.

Jacob de Haan

compose this concert
piece by the St. Peters
Wind Symphony from
Brisbane, Australia. Ross
Roy is the monumental
late 19th century villa
where St. Peters Lutheran
College was founded in
1945. The villa has
always remained the
school symbol. In this
composition, Jacob de
Haan sees the Ross Roy as
a metaphor for the years
spent at school (a
monument in time), where
one's personality is
formed. So, the opening
theme the artist calls
the Ross Roy theme
initially has monumental
characteristics.The
rhythmic motion, which
strides along in the
lower register and
percussion at the
beginning of the next
section is typical of
Tempo di Marcia.
Thismovement, accompanied
by repetitions of sound,
is a metaphor for the
structure and discipline
in school. This is the
introduction to a march
theme, symbolic of
passing through the
classes up to the final
examinations.Then, the
Ross Roy theme is dealt
with again, now in a
playful, humorous
variation. As if the
composer is saying there
should also be time for a
smile in school. The same
theme can be heard in
major key and a slower
tempo in the following
section, expressing pride
and self-confidence. This
is also the introduction
to the expressive middle
section that represents
love, friendship and
understanding.We then
return to the march theme
in a slightly altered
construction. The
oriental sounds,
constituting the
modulation to the final
theme, are symbols of the
diversity of cultures in
the school. The
characteristic final
theme first sounds
solemn, but turns into a
festive apotheosis. It is
no coincidence that the
final cadence is
reminiscent of the close
to a traditional
overture, for the school
years can be considered
the overture to the rest

Durchlaufen der Klassen
bis zum Ende der
Schulzeit. Eine
scherzhafte,
humoristische Version des
Hauptthemas darf nicht
fehlen, denn in der
Schule muss auch Zeit
für kleine Späße
und Lachen sein! Das
charakteristische
Schlussthemamündet in
einem festlichen
Höhepunkt.

T the beginning
of the 1980s Alison Moyet
was discovered by Vince
Clarke, who - in search
of greater independence -
had left the successful
band Depeche Mode. The
soulful singing style of
Moyet and the electronic,
innovative pop that
Clarke made melded well
together in the group
Yazoo with hits such as
Only You and Don’t
Go. However, after a
number of years Moyet
went her own way and
forged a solo career,
during which she
demonstrated a somewhat
more traditional sound.
She recorded several
covers (such as The First
Time I Ever Saw Your Face
and That Ole Devil Called
Love) but she also
wrotefine songs herself,
such as Love Resurrection
and, of course, the
expressive song AllCried
Out. This arrangement by
Peter Kleine Schaars does
justice to the atmosphere
of the original song.

This stately
opening work begins in
the low register with a
broad main theme from the
low brass immediately
setting the tone.
Gradually other sections
and registers enter and
despite retaining a
majestic character the
rhythmic element becomes
more active. This work
makes truly creative use
of sound, without great
virtuosity or complexity,
but maintains a good
balance between static
and dynamic elements.
Dit statige
openingswerk begint in
het lage register en
etaleert een breed
hoofdthema waarin het
lage koper meteen de toon
zet, gesteund door een
continue slagwerkcadans.
Geleidelijk komen ook
andere secties en
registers aan bod enwordt
het ritmische element
actiever, al bewaart het
geheel een gedragen
karakter. Het gaat om een
echt klankstuk, zonder
een grote virtuositeit of
complexiteit, maar met
een prima evenwicht
tussen statische en
dynamische
elemeten.
Dieses
majestätische
Eröffnungswerk beginnt
im tiefen Register und
präsentiert ein breit
angelegtes Hauptthema, in
welchem das tiefe Blech
sofort den Ton angibt,
unterstützt von einer
durchgehenden Kadenz in
den Schlaginstrumenten.
Nach und nach erscheinen
andere Orchesterteile und
Register und das
rhythmische Element wird
aktiver, wobei der
majestätische
Charakter jedoch erhalten
bleibt. Ein Werk, das
voll und ganz auf Klang
aufbaut, ohne große
Virtuosität oder
Komplexität, jedoch
mit einer perfekten
Balance zwischen
statischen und
dynamischen
Elementen.
Questo
maestoso brano di
apertura inizia su un
passaggio sonoro grave e
profondo dove echeggia un
tema ampio e generoso,
eseguito dagli ottoni
gravi, su un movimento
continuo delle
percussioni. Poco a poco,
altre sezioni della banda
integrano armoniosamente
lo sviluppo e completano
le zone di timbro. La
cellula ritmica si
intensifica senza
tuttavia influenzare il
carattere maestoso del
brano. The Swan on the
Hill non pone grandi
difficolt tecniche, ma
richiede un lavoro
profondo sulle dinamiche,
al fine di ottenere un
buon equilibrio tra gli
elementi musicali statici
e dinamici.

Philip Sparke's
Sinfonietta No. 4
is comprised of three
parts that are played as
an uninterrupted whole.
The _x001F_first movement
begins with a lyrical
fugato passage, framing a
brisker and more
rhythmical middle
section. The second
movement is slower and
contains a long and
expressive euphonium
solo. The third movement
is a salute to the
sponsor of this
commission: various
percussion instruments
conjure up sounds
reminiscent of a
carpenter's workshop,
accompanied by a unison
orchestral passage in a
scat
style.
Sinfonie
tta No. 4 bestaat uit
drie in elkaar
overlopende delen. Het
eerste deel bestaat uit
een lyrische fugato dat
overgaat in een sneller
en ritmisch gedeelte. In
het tweede, trage deel,
komt een prachtige
euphoniumsolo aan bod.
Het derde deel bevat een
muzikale knipoog naar de
opdrachtgever van het
werk waarin de componist
diverse slagwerk
instrumenten geluiden na
laat bootsen die uit een
timmermanswekplaats
lijken te komen.
Philip Sparkes
Sinfonietta No. 4
besteht aus drei Teilen,
die ohne Unterbrechung
gespielt werden. Der
erste Satz beginnt mit
einer lyrischen
Fugato-Passage, die einen
schnelleren und
rhythmischeren Mittelteil
umrahmt. Der zweite Teil
ist langsamer und enthalt
ein langes, expressives
Euphoniumsolo. Der dritte
Teil ist ein Salut an den
Sponsor dieses
Kompositionsauftrags:
Diverse Schlaginstrumente
erinnern an die Klange
aus einer Schreinerei,
unisono begleitet von
einer Orchesterpassage im

Sinf
onietta Ndeg 4 est
une oeuvre en trois
mouvements qui
s'enchainent sans
interruption. Le premier
mouvement decrit le
village de Stramproy. Il
s'ouvre avec un passage
lyrique en style fugue
qui enserre un passage
central plus rapide et
plus rythme. Dans le
second mouvement, la
musique est plus apaisee.
Un magni_x001C_fique solo
d'euphonium traverse la
trame musicale. Le
troisieme et dernier
mouvement illustre les
activites de l'entreprise
commanditaire de
l'oeuvre. On entend les
bruits de l'atelier dans
un passage pour
multi-percussions, qui
ornemente une texture
orchestrale a l'unisson,
proche du
scat.
Sinfoniet
ta No. 4 si compone
di tre parti da eseguire
senza interruzione. Il
primo movimento inizia
con un lirico passaggio
fugato, che fa da cornice
a una parte centrale piu
veloce e ritmica. Nel
secondo movimento la
musica e piu calma. Un

di eufonio attraversa la
trama musicale. Il terzo
movimento descrive in
musica le attivita
dell'azienda che ha
commissionato il brano
(un laboratorio di
falegnameria), attraverso
un passaggio per le
percussioni che ornano un
andamento orchestrale
all'unisono.
