Gelobet
seist du Jesu Christ
(We Praise You Jesus
Christ) is an old
Christmas hymn dating
from the 16th century,
which can still be found
in many hymnbooks today.
John Blanken has created
a varied and imaginative
arrangement on four
verses of the hymn. After
the introduction, derived
from the opening notes,
the hymn is first
accompanied by an agile
harmonisation. Next, we
hear the chorale in a
four-part setting with a
percussion accompaniment.
Then follows a short
prologue to the third
verse and finally its
time for fireworks as the
arrangement takes a
stylistic leap in time
with the festive prelude
to the fourth and last
verse.
Gelobet
seist du Jesu Christ
ist ein altes
Weihnachtslied, das aufs
16. Jahrhundert
zurückgeht und heute
noch in vielen
Liederbüchern zu
finden ist. John Blanken
bearbeitete vier Strophen
dieses Liedes in ganz
verschiedenen Weisen:
Nach der Einleitung
erklingt es zunächst
komplett, von einer
beweglichen
Harmonisierung begleitet,
und dann als
vierstimmiger Choral mit
Schlagzeug. In der
dritten Strophe liegt der
Cantus firmus im Tenor
und wird vom hohen
Register umspielt. Der
grandiose Schluss
führt thematisch
wieder zum Beginn des
Werkes
zurück.
Gelo
bet seist du, Jesu
Christ è un brano
natalizio tedesco del XVI
secolo. John Blanken ne
ha realizzato un
arrangiamento pieno di
diversit . Dopo una breve
introduzione, la melodia
è esposta nella sua
integrit . Viene quindi
inserita in un corale a
quattro voci con
percussioni. La terza
strofa porta il cantus
firmus nel cuore del
registro tenore. Il
finale è semplicemente
maestoso.

The
Ukrainian Bell
Carol is part of a
large choral work
entitled Shchedryk by the
Ukrainian composer Mykola
Dmytrovich Leontovych
(1877-1921). It was first
performed by students of
Kiev University in
December 1916. The tune
is an adaptation of an
old
‘shchedrivkaâ€â„
¢, a song traditionally
sung on Ukrainian New
Year’s Eve
(January 13th) which
hopes for good fortune in
the year to come. In
Shchedryk, Leontovych
added his own the lyrics
which concern the legend
claiming that when Jesus
was born, all the bells
on earth started ringing
in his honour.The tune
has since been the
inspiration of at least
four different Christmas
carols, but Philip Sparke
has sourced the
originalUkrainian melody
to create this stirring
arrangement.

De melodie is gebaseerd

oudsher werdgezongen op
de Oekra ense
oudejaarsavond (13
januari). In
Shchedryk voegde
Leontovych de tekst toe
over de legende die
vertelt dat bij de
geboorte van Jezus alle
klokken op aarde begonnen
te luiden. Sindsdien is
deze melodiede
inspiratiebron geweest
voor ten minste vier
verschillende Christmas
carols, waarvan Carol
of the Bells de
beroemdste is. Voor dit
meeslepende arrangement
heeft Philip Sparke
echter de oorspronkelijke
Oekra ense
melodiegebruikt.

‘Whence
is that Goodly Fragrance
Flowing?’ is the
first line of an old
French Christmas song
that originated in the
17th century. In 1728
John Gay used this joyous
and markedly festive
melody that honours Jesus
Christ and His miraculous
birth in his
Beggar’s
Opera. Philip Sparke
has given this melody a
new lease of life with
his charming and
imaginative arrangement
for the Christmas season.
Woher kommt
dieser angenehme
Duft?“ lautet die
erste Zeile dieses
ursprünglich
französischen
Weihnachtsliedes aus dem
17. Jahrhundert. Die
strahlend fröhliche
und festliche Melodie
dieses Liedes über die
Geburt Jesu wurde 1728
von John Gay in seiner
Bettleroper
verwendet und kommt auch
in Philip Sparkes
Bearbeitung für
Fanfareorchester sehr
schön zur Geltung.
