It may be
surprising to see a
fanfare piece
commissioned by a
Japanese ensemble, since
fanfare orchestras are
typically found in
Belgium, Holland and
Luxembourg, and also
France and Switzerland.
Senzoku Gakuen is one of
the largest and
mostprestigious music
universities in Japan,
and home to a wide
variety of ensembles and
orchestras. Since 2006
they have had a fanfare
orchestra, which was
started by Sotaru
Fukaishi, a euphonium
teacher who felt further
performance opportunity
wasneeded for saxhorn
instruments. Fukaishi had
loved the sound of
fanfare orchestras ever
since visiting the World
Music Contest in Kerkrade
(Holland) several years
earlier. Jan Van der
Roost was involved with
this new initiative from
the beginning,and they
were also joined by Manu
Mellaerts for certain
projects. The Dean of the
music department,
Professor Kazuo Tomioka,
fully supports the
ensemble and commissioned
Ostinati. The
première took place on
June 11th at Maeda Hall
inMizonokuchi (Kawasaki)
where Senzoku Gakuen is
based. The piece opens
with an impressive
timpani solo, followed by
brass and saxophone. The
rhythmical pulse remains
constant and the music is
fiery and assertive in
character. A pentatonic
melodygradually emerges
and the music loses its
vehemency and softens.
The initial percussion
ostinati subsequently
recurs and the first
section of the piece
concludes in a similar
mood to the opening. The
second movement is sweet
and melodic, opening
witha long passage for
the saxophone family in a
minor key. The same theme
then appears in the major
and is developed upon;
the music builds to a
majestic orchestral
forte, reminiscent of a
pipe organ in its
sonority. The theme
returns in the
originalminor key with a
change in instrumentation
leading the movement to a
quiet and peaceful end on
a soft E minor chord. The
finale starts with
percussion: a four-bar
pattern is repeated
several times over which
the movement’s
melodic themes
areintroduced. These
melodic elements are
varied and used in
different versions and
the ostinato idea, which
characterizes the entire
piece, is highlighted.
The theme travels through
the orchestra, appearing
on various instruments
and in variousregisters.
It captures the
listener’s
attention and displays
the full range of sound
and colour within the
fanfare
orchestra.

The Greek poet
Homer wrote about Troy
and the Trojan War -
which probably took place
in what is now Asia Minor
- in his Iliad in the 8th
century B.C. Nowadays,
the term 'Trojan'
generally refers to a
malware program that is
used to gain unauthorized
access to computers. This
use comes from the
legendary Trojan Horse,
which saw the turning
poing in the battle
between Greeks and
Trojans through the
cunning of Odysseus. Let
us return to the
beginning of the story:
Paris, son of the king of
Troy, is tasked by Zeus
with judging the beauty
of the three goddesses
Aphrodite, Pallas Athena,
and Hera. Aphrodite, the
goddess of love, flatters
Paris by promising him
the most beautiful woman
in the world. Soon
afterwards, on a journey
to Greece, Paris meets
the beautiful Helen, who
immediately falls in love
with him. Since however
she is the wife of
Spartan king Menelaus,
she eventually lets
herself be kidnapped by
Paris voluntarily. The
Greeks then form a large
army and go to war
against Troy to retrieve
Helen, leading to a
ten-year siege of the
city. The city is
eventually conquered not
through combat, however,
but through Odysseus'
cunning ploy. He has the
idea of building an
enormous wooden horse
with warriors hidden
inside. The horse is
placed at the gates of
the city. Thus, the
Trojans are tricked into
giving up the siege when,
despite various warnings,
they bring the horse into
the city to dedicate it
to the goddess Athena. At
night, the soldiers climb
out of the horse and open
the gate for the Greek
army. The troops storm
the city and raze it to
the ground. The royal
family and all the Trojan
warriors are killed -
only Aeneas, the son of
Aphrodite, escapes.
Later, following many
years' wanderings he and
his acolytes will become
known as the founders of
the Roman people.

Utopia is the
name of a book written by
the English author Thomas
More and was published in
1516. The title is a word
thought up by More
himself, after the Greek
language, meaning
Nowhereland and leading
to the invention of the
words utopian scheme and
utopian. Utopia pictured
an ideal state on an
island far from the
inhabited world. This
idea was the basis of the
composition. It makes one
think of Oregon in
variety of themes and
style. Utopia also exists
of a combination of
styles that breathe the
atmosphere of film music.
However, Utopia sounds
less American. The slow
and stirring middle part
for example is closer to
the European romanticism:
the chord signals in the
brasssection remind of
Wagner's music.

Thomas More gepubliceerd
boek bekend is geworden.
Utopia is een door More
zelf naar het Grieks
gemaakt woord dat
Nergensland betekent en
de woorden utopie en
utopismeheeft doen
ontstaan. Utopia
schildert een ideale
staat op een ver van de
bewoonde wereld gelegen
eiland. Dit idee vormde
de inpiratiebron voor
deze compositie. Qua
variatie in thematiek en
stijl doet het werk
denken aan Oregon.Ook
Utopia bestaat uit een
combinatie van stijlen
die de atmosfeer ademen
van filmmuziek. Toch
klinkt Utopia minder
Amerikaans. Het langzame,
meeslepende middendeel
bijvoorbeeld komt dichter
in de buurt van de
Europese romantiek.de
drieklanksignalen in het
koper herinneren aan de
muziek van Wagner.

Mercury is a
concert march composed in
a typically British
idiom. In 1990, Jan Van
der Roost wrote this
piece on the occasion of
the 15-year anniversary
of his own band: Brass
Band Midden Brabant. Like
many British marches, the
main theme is written in
a minor key. Powerful and
virtuoso themes
characterize the first
part of this march, while
the trio melody is much
more melodical, offering
the tenor register to
display its lyrical
skills. Follows a dynamic
passage for trombones and
trumpets/cornets, leading
to a grandioso version of
the main trio melody and
thus concluding this
march in a magnificent
way.
