It may be
surprising to see a
fanfare piece
commissioned by a
Japanese ensemble, since
fanfare orchestras are
typically found in
Belgium, Holland and
Luxembourg, and also
France and Switzerland.
Senzoku Gakuen is one of
the largest and
mostprestigious music
universities in Japan,
and home to a wide
variety of ensembles and
orchestras. Since 2006
they have had a fanfare
orchestra, which was
started by Sotaru
Fukaishi, a euphonium
teacher who felt further
performance opportunity
wasneeded for saxhorn
instruments. Fukaishi had
loved the sound of
fanfare orchestras ever
since visiting the World
Music Contest in Kerkrade
(Holland) several years
earlier. Jan Van der
Roost was involved with
this new initiative from
the beginning,and they
were also joined by Manu
Mellaerts for certain
projects. The Dean of the
music department,
Professor Kazuo Tomioka,
fully supports the
ensemble and commissioned
Ostinati. The
première took place on
June 11th at Maeda Hall
inMizonokuchi (Kawasaki)
where Senzoku Gakuen is
based. The piece opens
with an impressive
timpani solo, followed by
brass and saxophone. The
rhythmical pulse remains
constant and the music is
fiery and assertive in
character. A pentatonic
melodygradually emerges
and the music loses its
vehemency and softens.
The initial percussion
ostinati subsequently
recurs and the first
section of the piece
concludes in a similar
mood to the opening. The
second movement is sweet
and melodic, opening
witha long passage for
the saxophone family in a
minor key. The same theme
then appears in the major
and is developed upon;
the music builds to a
majestic orchestral
forte, reminiscent of a
pipe organ in its
sonority. The theme
returns in the
originalminor key with a
change in instrumentation
leading the movement to a
quiet and peaceful end on
a soft E minor chord. The
finale starts with
percussion: a four-bar
pattern is repeated
several times over which
the movement’s
melodic themes
areintroduced. These
melodic elements are
varied and used in
different versions and
the ostinato idea, which
characterizes the entire
piece, is highlighted.
The theme travels through
the orchestra, appearing
on various instruments
and in variousregisters.
It captures the
listener’s
attention and displays
the full range of sound
and colour within the
fanfare

The
idea behind this work was
to create an opening
piece, something to start
a concert in an unusual
way. The title is a
portmanteau word derived
from madrigal. The work
indeed begins in
Renaissance mood however
gradually tries to shake
of its modal start and,
by contrasting different
instrumental families,the
work changes into modern
clothes.Why not add a
little Renaissance
splendor to any concert
with this unique new
work?
De titel
Madrigalum is
afgeleid van de term
madrigaal - en dit
openingswerk begint
inderdaad in een
renaissancistische sfeer,
aanvankelijk met
slagwerk. Een
fanfareachtig motief,
ingezet door een
solotrompet, is gebaseerd
ophet ritmische motief
dat de aanvang van veel
zestiende-eeuwse
madrigalen kenmerkt (een
lange toon en twee korte
tonen). Maar het werk
schudt zijn modale start
van zich af: met
contrasten tussen
verschillende
instrumentgroepen
veranderthet van richting
en hult zich in een
modern jasje. Een legato
gedeelte vestigt de
aandacht op de zachter
klinkende instrumenten in
afwisseling met het
madrigaalritme - tot een
complete omschakeling
naar een sneller coda
leidt,waarmee het werk
besluit.
Dem Titel
entsprechend, beginnt
dieses Eröffnungswerk
im Renaissance-Stil in
den Schlaginstrumenten
mit einer fanfareartigen
Figur in einer
Solotrompete. Dann
entwickelt sich die Musik
jedoch hin zu moderneren
Klängen. Dann wechselt
sich ein Legato mit dem
schnelleren
Madrigalrhythmus ab,
bevor das Stück noch
einmal die Richtung
ändert und in einer
schnellen Coda endet. Ein
ungewöhnlicher, viel
versprechender Auftakt
für Ihr Konzert!
Questo brano di
apertura è insolito e
originale. Il titolo è
un acronimo derivato dal
termine madrigale, una
forma musicale apparsa
nel XVI secolo.
Madrigalum apre al
suono delle percussioni,
in uno stile
rinascimentale. La tromba
espone un motivo di
fanfara ispirato da una
figura ritmica
caratteristica di
numerosi madrigali
dell’epoca. La
struttura abbandona
progressivamente la sua
forma modale per
sviluppare un dialogo
strumentale contrastante
e contrastato che d al
brano una forma più
moderna. Un passaggio
legato evidenzia gli
strumenti dalle sonorit
più calde e si alterna
con motivi ritmici del
madrigale, prima di
imporre un cambiamento
assoluto del carattere
cheaccompagna il brano ad
un finale eclatante.

In ‘Land of
Legends’ German
composer Andreas Ludwig
(what’s in a name)
Schulte takes you along
to the fictional world of
legends, myths and fairy
tales. The
introduction to the first
part (The Castle)
describes the majestic
contours of the sceneof
action. Its
instrumentation (horns)
immediately makes you
imagine being in Medieval
spheres. The addition
of trenchant copper
instruments even gives
the part a heroic tinge.
After entering through
the gate, a lot of hustle
and bustle appearsto be
going on in the
courtyard. Pages, squires
and soldiers are busy
attending to their arms.
Beer is being brewed,
flax is being spun,
cattle are being tended
and some craftsmen from
neighbouring villages are
busily at work. In
the upperchamber of the
round tower lives an old
man (The Old Wizard). He
hardly ever comes out,
and nobody knows exactly
what he is doing. It is
said that he is engaged
in wizardry and magic. It
is all very
mysterious. There are
also festivities, some
ofthem sober, others
exuberant. The
wedding in the third part
is celebrated in a grand
manner. With a flourish
of trumpets, the bride
makes her entrance at the
hand of her father.
Afterwards, at the party
there is dancing to the
music played byminstrels
and of course a plentiful
banquet
follows.
In
‘Land of Legends’
worden we door de Duitse
componist Andreas Ludwig
(what’s in a name)
Schulte meegenomen in de
fictieve wereld van
legendes, sagen en
sprookjes. De
inleiding van het eerste
deel (The Castle)
beschrijft de majestueuze
contourenvan de plaats
van handeling. De
instrumentatie (hoorns)
zorgt er mede voor dat we
ons direct in
Middeleeuwse sferen
wanen. De toevoeging
van het scherp koper
geeft zelfs een
heldhaftige
tintje.Wanneer we door de
poort naar binnen gaan
blijkt dathet op
binnenplaats een en al
bedrijvigheid is. De
pages, schildknapen en
soldaten houden zich
bezig met het in tact
houden van de
wapenuitrusting. Er wordt
bier gebrouwen, vlas
gesponnen, het vee wordt
verzorgd en enkele
ambachtslieden uit
deomliggende dorpen zijn
druk in de weer. In de
bovenste kamer van de
ronde toren verblijft een
oude wijze man (The old
Wizzard). Hij laat zich
bijna nooit zien, niemand
weet wat hij precies
doet. Er wordt gezegd dat
hij zich bezig houdt
mettovenarij/magie. Het
is een groot mysterie, in
nevelen
gehuld. Gefeest werd
er ook. De ene keer sober
de andere keer
uitbundig. De
bruiloft in het derde
deel heeft allure. Onder
luid trompetgeschal wordt
de bruid aan de hand van
haar vaderbinnengebracht.
Tijdens het feest wordt
er gedanst onder
begeleiding van de
troubadours en natuurlijk
volgt een bourgondische
maaltijd.

In ‘Land of
Legends’ German
composer Andreas Ludwig
(what’s in a name)
Schulte takes you along
to the fictional world of
legends, myths and fairy
tales. The
introduction to the first
part (The Castle)
describes the majestic
contours of the sceneof
action. Its
instrumentation (horns)
immediately makes you
imagine being in Medieval
spheres. The addition
of trenchant copper
instruments even gives
the part a heroic tinge.
After entering through
the gate, a lot of hustle
and bustle appearsto be
going on in the
courtyard. Pages, squires
and soldiers are busy
attending to their arms.
Beer is being brewed,
flax is being spun,
cattle are being tended
and some craftsmen from
neighbouring villages are
busily at work. In
the upperchamber of the
round tower lives an old
man (The Old Wizard). He
hardly ever comes out,
and nobody knows exactly
what he is doing. It is
said that he is engaged
in wizardry and magic. It
is all very
mysterious. There are
also festivities, some
ofthem sober, others
exuberant. The
wedding in the third part
is celebrated in a grand
manner. With a flourish
of trumpets, the bride
makes her entrance at the
hand of her father.
Afterwards, at the party
there is dancing to the
music played byminstrels
and of course a plentiful
banquet
follows.
In
‘Land of Legends’
worden we door de Duitse
componist Andreas Ludwig
(what’s in a name)
Schulte meegenomen in de
fictieve wereld van
legendes, sagen en
sprookjes. De
inleiding van het eerste
deel (The Castle)
beschrijft de majestueuze
contourenvan de plaats
van handeling. De
instrumentatie (hoorns)
zorgt er mede voor dat we
ons direct in
Middeleeuwse sferen
wanen. De toevoeging
van het scherp koper
geeft zelfs een
heldhaftige
tintje.Wanneer we door de
poort naar binnen gaan
blijkt dathet op
binnenplaats een en al
bedrijvigheid is. De
pages, schildknapen en
soldaten houden zich
bezig met het in tact
houden van de
wapenuitrusting. Er wordt
bier gebrouwen, vlas
gesponnen, het vee wordt
verzorgd en enkele
ambachtslieden uit
deomliggende dorpen zijn
druk in de weer. In de
bovenste kamer van de
ronde toren verblijft een
oude wijze man (The old
Wizzard). Hij laat zich
bijna nooit zien, niemand
weet wat hij precies
doet. Er wordt gezegd dat
hij zich bezig houdt
mettovenarij/magie. Het
is een groot mysterie, in
nevelen
gehuld. Gefeest werd
er ook. De ene keer sober
de andere keer
uitbundig. De
bruiloft in het derde
deel heeft allure. Onder
luid trompetgeschal wordt
de bruid aan de hand van
haar vaderbinnengebracht.
Tijdens het feest wordt
er gedanst onder
begeleiding van de
troubadours en natuurlijk
volgt een bourgondische
maaltijd.

writes: The idea for the
piece came when I was
reading an article about
a branch of Chinese
philosophy which is
abbreviated as Wu
Xing*, which has no
exact translation but can
mean, for example,
five elements, five
phases or five
states of change. It
is central to all
elements of Chinese
thought, including
science, philosophy,
medicine andastrology,
and in simple terms tries
to create various cyclic
relationships between
five elements in all
walks of life.An example
is: Earth - Metal - Water
- Wood - Fire - (Earth)
etc. where (in one cycle)
earth bears metal, metal
changes to liquid (water)
when heated, water helps
trees grow, wood burns to
create fire, fire
produces ash (earth) and
the cycle continues.I was
particularly interested
in the cycle of
emotions:- Meditation -
Sorrow - Fear - Anger -
Joy - (Meditation) etc.
and thought this cyclic
principle would provide
an effective emotional
journey for a piece of
music. So Five States
of Change has five
equal sections which
loosely characterise this
emotional cycle. I have
tried to make the music
grow organically, with
minimal repetition, and
each movement evolves
from the musical elements
at the end of the
previous one, with the
opening material
appearing, transformed,
at the end of the piece
to complete the cycle.

Paul and Barry
Ryan were identical twin
sons of 1950’s pop
singer Marion Ryan and
were born on 24th October
1948. They were groomed
for stardom and had
started singing as a duo
before their fifteenth
birthday. They were
signed by Decca in 1965
and brilliantly marketed
as clean-cut fashion
icons. Their first single
‘Don’t Bring
Me Your
Heartaches’
reached the UK top twenty
but their success as twin
performers lasted only
three years. In 1968
Barry embarked on a solo
career while Paul
concentrated on writing
and producing. Eloise
with its melodramatic
vocal style and heavily
orchestrated backing was
an early success of this
new collaboration and
went on to be covered by
a variety ofartists,
including punk legends
The Damned.
De
eeneiige tweelingbroers
Paul en Barry Ryan
vormden al een zangduo
voor hun vijftiende
verjaardag. In 1965
tekenden ze een contract
bij Decca en werden ze op
een briljante manier voor
het voetlicht gebracht
als keurige
mode-idolen,maar hun
succes als
tweelingartiesten duurde
slechts drie jaar. In
1968 begon Barry aan een
solocarrière terwijl
Paul zich concentreerde
op het schrijver- en
producerschap.
Eloise, een stevig
georkestreerd,
melodramatischgezongen
nummer, was een vroege en
succesvolle vrucht van
deze samenwerking. De
song werd in de loop der
tijd vertolkt door
diverse
artiesten.
Paul
und Barry Ryan waren die
Zwillingssöhne der
50er-Jahre-Popsängerin
Marion Ryan. Den beiden
Brüdern war eine
Zukunft als Popstars in
die Wiege gelegt. Bereits
vor ihrem 15. Geburtstag
traten sie als Duo auf.
Später verlegte sich
Paul jedoch aufs
Songschreiben und Barry
trat solo auf. Der Hit
Eloise mit seinem
melodramatischen
Gesangsstil und dem stark
orchestrierten
Hintergrund ist ein
Resultat dieser
erfolgreichen
Zusammenarbeit und wurde
in der Folge von
zahlreichen Künstlern
neu interpretiert. Philip
Sparke machte den
Pop-Evergreen nun auch
für Blasorchester
spielbar.

were born on 24th October
1948. They were groomed
for stardom and had
started singing as a duo
before their fifteenth
birthday. They were
signed by Decca in 1965
and brilliantly marketed
as clean-cut fashion
icons. Their first single
‘Don’t Bring
Me Your
Heartaches’
reached the UK top twenty
but their success as twin
performers lasted only
three years. In 1968
Barry embarked on a solo
career while Paul
concentrated on writing
and producing. Eloise
with its melodramatic
vocal style and heavily
orchestrated backing was
an early success of this
new collaboration and
went on to be covered by
a variety ofartists,
including punk legends
The Damned.
De
eeneiige tweelingbroers
Paul en Barry Ryan
vormden al een zangduo
voor hun vijftiende
verjaardag. In 1965
tekenden ze een contract
bij Decca en werden ze op
een briljante manier voor
het voetlicht gebracht
als keurige
mode-idolen,maar hun
succes als
tweelingartiesten duurde
slechts drie jaar. In
1968 begon Barry aan een
solocarrière terwijl
Paul zich concentreerde
op het schrijver- en
producerschap.
Eloise, een stevig
georkestreerd,
melodramatischgezongen
nummer, was een vroege en
succesvolle vrucht van
deze samenwerking. De
song werd in de loop der
tijd vertolkt door
diverse
artiesten.
Paul
und Barry Ryan waren die
Zwillingssöhne der
50er-Jahre-Popsängerin
Marion Ryan. Den beiden
Brüdern war eine
Zukunft als Popstars in
die Wiege gelegt. Bereits
vor ihrem 15. Geburtstag
traten sie als Duo auf.
Später verlegte sich
Paul jedoch aufs
Songschreiben und Barry
trat solo auf. Der Hit
Eloise mit seinem
melodramatischen
Gesangsstil und dem stark
orchestrierten
Hintergrund ist ein
Resultat dieser
erfolgreichen
Zusammenarbeit und wurde
in der Folge von
zahlreichen Künstlern
neu interpretiert. Philip
Sparke machte den
Pop-Evergreen nun auch
für Blasorchester
spielbar.

This enchanting
melody is from the fourth
movement of Bach’s
Cantata 140 which was
composed in 1731 using
the parable of the wise
and foolish virgins as
the text. The work is
beautiful in its
simplicity with only
three melodic lines,
demonstrating
Bach’s
counterpoint at its best.
For greatest effect it is
suggested that the
trumpets and trombones
play behind the band or
to the right and left of
the stage.
Bach
schreef een ontelbare
hoeveelheid cantates.
Deze cantate, waarvan de
tekst afkomstig is van de
gelijkenis van de wijze
en de dwaze maagden,
schreef Bach in 1731 voor
de 27e zondag na
Drievuldigheidsdag (de
eerste week van deadvent)
en is gebaseerd op een
koraal van Philipp
Nicolai (1556-1608). Het
vierde deel van de
cantate, waarin
Bach’s contrapunt
zich van zijn meest
elegante kant laat zien,
werd door Philip Sparke
bewerkt. Het bestaat uit
drie melodielijnenen is
in zijn eenvoud
wonderbaarlijk
mooi.
Johann
Sebastian Bach schrieb in
seinem musikalisch
überaus produktiven
Leben unzählige
Kantaten. Diese Kantate,
deren Text vom Gleichnis
der klugen und der
törichten Jungfrauen
handelt, schrieb er zum
ersten Adventssonntag.
Philip Sparke bearbeitete
daraus den vierten Satz,
in welchem sich Bachs
Kontrapunkt von seiner
elegantesten Seite zeigt,
für Blasorchester. Das
Stück besteht aus nur
drei melodischen Linien,
ist aber gerade in seiner
Schlichtheit
wunderschön.

The
French composer Louis
Bourgeois lived from
c.1510 to 1560. Bourgeois
was cantor in Geneva and,
commissioned by John
Calvin, he composed
melodies for metrical
(rhyming) versions of the
psalms. After completing
about a hundred one-part
psalms, he made some
four-part arrangements,
which were denounced and
even resulted in his
imprisonment for a day.
Later, Bourgeois
published a number of
psalm collections, and
judging from his book Le
droict chemin de musique
he was also an excellent
educator. The melodies
Bourgeois composed, are
(contrary to Gregorian
chants) particularly
suitable for community
singing. This applies to
his hymn tune Saint
Michael, which is why
this melody hasbeen used
for various texts,
written for many
occasions. John Blanken
made this arrangement for
a wedding ceremony: an
occasion in which faith
and trust play a large -
if not the largest -
role. Hence the title
Hymn of Faith. The
arrangement contains four
verses of the hymn. After
a majestic opening the
hymn follows twice, the
second verse being
embellished in the tenor
register. After a short
interlude verse three
follows, played by a
quartet. The majestic
opening is then repeated
as a modulation into the
fourth verse, which
concludes the work in a
brilliant tutti.
De melodieën
van de France componist
Louis Bourgeois (ca.
1510-1560) zijn heel
geschikt voor volkszang -
zo ook de hymne ST
Michael. Niet voor niets
is deze melodie gebruikt
voor vele liedteksten
voor uiteenlopende
gelegenheden. JohnBlanken
maakte dit arrangement
voor een trouwdienst, een
gelegenheid waarbij
vertrouwen een grote rol
speelt, vandaar de
titelHymn of
Faith. Het
arrangement herbergt vier
vrezen. Na een
majestueuze opening volgt
de hymnetwee keer,
waarbij het tweede vers
wordt omgespeeld in het
tenorregister. Na een
kort tussenspel volgt
vers drie in een zetting
voor kwartet. De opening
wordt herhaald als
modulatie naar het vierde
vers, waarmee het werk in
eenstralend tutti
afsluit.
