This is an
ancient Welsh air that
was first published in
Relics of the Welsh Bards
in 1794. Dafydd (David)
Owain was a famous Welsh
bard who lived on a farm
called Gareg Wen (The
White Rock) in Eifionydd,
Carnarnvonshire, North
Wales. Tradition has it
that on his deathbed he
called for his harp and
composed this lovely
melody, requesting that
it be played at his
funeral. Accordingly, it
was later played at the
parish church of
Ynys-Cynhaiarn. Lyrics
were later added by
Ceiriog Hughes, which
describe the melody's
inspiration. This version
for fanfare band retains
all the beauty and
simplicity of the
original.

Klezmer music
originated in the
‘shtetl’
(villages) and the
ghettos of Eastern
Europe, where itinerant
Jewish troubadours, known
as
‘klezmorim’,
had performed at
celebrations,
particularly weddings,
since the early Middle

century, lyrics had been
added to klezmer music,
due to the
‘badkhn’
(the master of ceremony
at weddings), to the
‘Purimshpil’
(the play of Esther at
Purim) and to traditions
of the Yiddish theatre,
but the term gradually
became synonymous with
instrumental music,
particularly featuring
the violin and clarinet.
In recent years it has
again become very popular
and in A Klezmer Karnival
Philip Sparke has used
three contrasting
traditionaltunes to form
a suite that will bring a
true karnival atmosphere

De wortels van de

‘Whence
is that Goodly Fragrance
Flowing?’ is the
first line of an old
French Christmas song
that originated in the
17th century. In 1728
John Gay used this joyous
and markedly festive
melody that honours Jesus
Christ and His miraculous
birth in his
Beggar’s
Opera. Philip Sparke
has given this melody a
new lease of life with
his charming and
imaginative arrangement
for the Christmas season.

This enchanting
melody is from the fourth
movement of Bach’s
Cantata 140 which was
composed in 1731 using
the parable of the wise
and foolish virgins as
the text. The work is
beautiful in its
simplicity with only
three melodic lines,
demonstrating
Bach’s
counterpoint at its best.
For greatest effect it is
suggested that the
trumpets and trombones
play behind the band or
to the right and left of
the stage.
Bach
schreef een ontelbare
hoeveelheid cantates.
Deze cantate, waarvan de
tekst afkomstig is van de
gelijkenis van de wijze
en de dwaze maagden,
schreef Bach in 1731 voor
de 27e zondag na
Drievuldigheidsdag (de
eerste week van deadvent)
en is gebaseerd op een
koraal van Philipp
Nicolai (1556-1608). Het
vierde deel van de
cantate, waarin
Bach’s contrapunt
zich van zijn meest
elegante kant laat zien,
werd door Philip Sparke
bewerkt. Het bestaat uit
drie melodielijnenen is
in zijn eenvoud
wonderbaarlijk
mooi.
Johann
Sebastian Bach schrieb in
seinem musikalisch
überaus produktiven
Leben unzählige
Kantaten. Diese Kantate,
deren Text vom Gleichnis
der klugen und der
törichten Jungfrauen
handelt, schrieb er zum
ersten Adventssonntag.
Philip Sparke bearbeitete
daraus den vierten Satz,
in welchem sich Bachs
Kontrapunkt von seiner
elegantesten Seite zeigt,
für Blasorchester. Das
Stück besteht aus nur
drei melodischen Linien,
ist aber gerade in seiner
Schlichtheit
wunderschön.

When Jeff
Wayne’s musical
adaptation
H.G.Wells’ novel
The War of the Worlds was
originally released, no
one would have believed
that it would become so
popular. The Eve of the
War, the stunning opening
scene of Wayne’s
show, became a huge
international hit single
in its own right. This
new arrangement by the
highly respected British
composer/arranger Ed
Keeley retains all the
drama and tension of the
original atmospheric
opening. A joy to perform
and a pleasure to listen
to.
Toen Jeff
Wayne’s muzikale
bewerking van The War
of the Worlds - H.G.
Wells’ roman uit
1898 - eind jaren
zeventig werd
uitgebracht, had niemand
kunnen denken dat deze zo
populair zou worden. Met
Richard Burton, David
Essexen Phil Lynott
(beiden van Thin Lizzy),
Julie Covington, Chris
Thompson en Justin
Hayward bestormde het
dubbelalbum meteen de
Britse hitlijsten, waar
het jarenlang bleef
staan. The Eve of the
War, de verbluffende
openingsscène,werd als
single een enorme
internationale hit. Een
feest der herkenning voor
uw
publiek.
Krieg
der Welten ist wohl
jedem ein Begriff, sei es
in Form von
H.G.Wells’ Roman
aus dem Jahr 1898, Orson
Welles‘
Radioadaption, Jeff
Waynes innovativem
Rockmusical oder
jüngst von Steven
Spielbergs Kinofilm aus
dem Jahr 2005. The Eve
of the War, die
atemberaubende
Eröffnungsmelodie von
Waynes Musikversion wurde
ein großer
internationaler Hit. Das
Album ist die bekannteste
Musikaufnahme aller
Zeiten und wurde mehrfach
ausgezeichnet. Grund
genug für Edwin H.
Keely, diese Bearbeitung
für Blasorchester zu
schreiben, die dem
Original absolut gerecht
wird.
The War
of the Worlds (La
guerra dei mondi) è
universalmente noto come
romanzo di H.G. Wells del
1898,
nell’adattamento
radiofonico di Orson
Welles, come musical rock
firmato Jeff Waynes, e
anche per il film di
Steven Spielberg del
2005. L’album è
uno dei più grandi
successi mondiali,
premiato numerose volte.
Queste ragioni hanno
spinto Edwin H. Keeley a
comporre questo
arrangiamento per banda
molto fedele
all’originale.
