There are
people who are capable of
planning well. They live
their lives in a
well-structured manner
and know exactly what
they have to do. On the
other hand, there are
also people who are the
exact opposite: they want
to do too many things at
once and are often
somewhat absent-minded,
which occasionally
results in frantic
situations. The outcome
of one such situation is
‘They are
coming’. John
Emerson Blackstone had
been working on a new
composition for some time
when he received a
telephone call from his
editor, who told him that
the deadline was
approaching rapidly, even
worse, that it would
expire at the end of that
same day and that he
would drop by in person
to fetch thecomposition!
Blackstone set to
work in a frenzy and
completed the last
details. When his editor
arrived, the piece was
finished ..... and got
its definitive title:
‘They are coming’.
Er zijn mensen
die goed kunnen plannen.
Ze leven zeer
gestructureerd en weten
precies wat ze moeten
doen. Er zijn er ook die
dat niet kunnen. Ze doen
vaak vijf dingen
tegelijkertijd, zijn niet
zelden enigszins
verstrooid met als
gevolgdat er af en toe
gespannen situaties
ontstaan. Het resultaat
van zo’n situatie is
‘They are
coming’. John
Emerson Blackstone was al
een poosje bezig met een
nieuwe compositie toen de
hij zijn uitgever aan de
telefoon kreeg.De
deadline kwam met rasse
schreden in zicht,
sterker nog, het einde
van die bewuste dag was
de deadline en zou de
uitgever het materiaal
bij de componist ophalen.
Blackstone is als een
razende Roeland aan het
werk gegaanen heeft de
laatste puntjes op de i
gezet. Toen de
uitgever arriveerde was
het stuk klaar... en
kreeg haar definitieve
titel: ‘They are
coming’.

1. Promenade Many

People are strolling
along the avenues and
amorous couples are
sitting on a park

2. Lovey
Dovey One of these
couples is knee-deep in

3. Crispy

contrasts between a crisp
staccato section in

section in three-four

depicted. Is Crispy the

girl?
4.
Farewell In the last
particle the couple says
goodbye. We still think
back tothe walk through
the city. It sounds a
little less happy now.
Not everyone is good at

a tear flows.
Deze compositie
van Mark Cunningham heeft
vier delen, en speelt
zich af op een zonnige
dag in een pittoresk
stadje.
1.
Promenade Veel mensen
maken een wandeling door
de stad. De fanfare trekt
door de straten. Mensen
lopente flaneren langs de
lanen en verliefde
stelletjes zitten op een
bankje in het
park.
2.
Lovey-dovey Eén van deze
stelletjes is tot over de
oren verliefd.
3.
Crispy and Creamy Hier
worden de
tegenstellingentussen een
knapperig staccato
gedeelte in 2/4 maatsoort
en een vloeiend legato
gedeelte in 3/4 maatsoort
uitgebeeld. Is Crispy de
jongen en Creamy het
meisje?
4.
Farewell In het laatste
deeltje nemen ze afscheid
van elkaar.We denken nog
even terug aan de
wandeling door de stad.
Het klinkt nu wel wat
minder vrolijk. Niet
iedereen is goed in
afscheid nemen, er vloeit
wel eens een
traantje.

The word
‘tsunami’ is of
Japanese origin. When you
look it up in a
dictionary, you will find
that it means ‘a great
sea wave produced by
submarine earth movement
or volcanic eruption’.
A megatsunami is the
superlative of this
awesome expressionof
power that nature can
create, and has
catastrophic
consequences.
When Carl Wittrock
completed this
composition not many such
big earth movements had
occurred, but since then
we have become all too
familiar with the
disastrousconsequences
which a tsunami may
have. On the 26th of
December 2004 a heavy
seaquake took place near
the Indonesian island of
Sumatra. Tidal waves 10
meters in height ravaged
the coastal regions of
many countries for miles
around. The tsunamitook
the lives of thousands of
people and destroyed many
villages and
towns.
There are
more areas which run the
risk of being struck by a
tsunami, such as the
island of La Palma, one
of the Canary Islands.
This island is based on
oceaniccrust at a
fracture zone and as such
is one of nature’s time
bombs. The consequences
of a natural calamity
like a megatsunami are
immense. In the case
of La Palma, the tidal
wave will move in the
direction of South
America, where it may
reach 50km inland,
destroying everything on
its way.
In his
composition Wittrock
describes an ordinary day
which will have an
unexpected ending.
Right from the
beginning there seems to
be something in the air,
the music creating an
oppressiveatmosphere of
impending disaster.
Themes are interrupted,
broken off suddenly,
followed by silence,
suggesting the calm
before the storm.
Suddenly a short
climax (glissandi in the
trombone part) indicates
the seaquake, and the
megatsunami isa fact.
Hereafter follows a
turbulent passage
symbolising the huge
rolling waves. After
nature’s force has
spent itself, resignation
sets in and the
composition ends with a
majestic ode to
nature.
Het woord
tsunami is afkomstig uit
het Japans. Het
woordenboek geeft als
betekenis: een vloedgolf
als gevolg van een
onderzeese aardbeving.
Een megatsunami is de
overtreffende trap van
deze vorm van
natuurgeweld en heeft
catastrofale
gevolgen.
Toen
Carl Wittrock deze
compositie voltooide
waren er nog niet veel
voorbeelden van
dergelijke grote
bevingen, maar inmiddels
weten we maar al te goed
welke desastreuze
gevolgen een tsunami kan
veroorzaken. Op 26
december 2004 vond ereen
zware beving plaats in de
zee nabij het
Indonesische eiland
Sumatra. Vloedgolven van
wel 10 meter hoog
teisterden de kuststreken
van menig land in de
verre omtrek. De tsunami
eiste duizenden
mensenlevens en
verwoestte vele dorpen
ensteden.
Er zijn
meer gebieden waar sprake
is van een directe
dreiging, zoals op het
eiland La Palma, één
van de Canarische
eilanden. Dit eiland ligt
op een breukvlak en is
daarmee een tijdbom van
de natuur. Bij een
calamiteit als
eenmegatsunami zijn de
gevolgen niet te
overzien. In het
geval van La Palma
begeeft de vloedgolf van
enkele honderden meters
zich richting Zuid
Amerika met alle gevolgen
van dien. Tot ongeveer 50
kilometer landinwaarts
heeft de megatsunami
eenallesverwoestende
werking.
In de
compositie schetst
Wittrock een gewone dag
die ongewoon zal aflopen.
Al vanaf het begin hangt
er iets in de lucht en is
er sprake van een
dreigende, beklemmende
sfeer. Themas worden
onderbroken
doorplotselinge
afbrekingen en stiltes.
Opeens is daar de korte
climax (glissandi in
trombones) die de beving
symboliseert en de
megatsunami is een feit.
Een onrustig gedeelte
vangt aan, daarmee de
rollende, voortstuwende
golven symboliserend. Na
hetnatuurgeweld is er
berusting en The Power of
the Megatsunami wordt
afgesloten met een
majestueuze ode aan de
natuur.

The Geuzen
Medal is an annual award
given to people or
organizations who have
found unique ways to
further democracy in the
world and help eliminate
dictatorships, racism,
and discrimination. The
original Geuzen fought
against Spanish
imperialism in Holland
during the16th century.
During the Second World
War a group resisting the
Nazis also named
themselves De Geuzen. Jan
de Haan incorporates
Psalm 43, sung by a group
of condemned prisoners
shortly before their
execution in 1943, into
Geuzen Medal Fanfare,
composed for the 25th
bestowal of this special
award.
Ieder jaar
weer wordt ze weer
uitgereikt: de
Geuzenpenning. Dit is aan
een persoon of
organisatie die zich op
bijzondere wijze inzet
voor de democratie en
tegen dictatuur, racisme
en discriminatie. In de
zestiende eeuw streden
deGeuzen tegen de Spaanse
bezetting. In de Tweede
Wereldoorlog was er
eveneens een verzetsgroep
die zich zo noemde. Een
deel van hen werd in 1943
veroordeeld tot de
doodstraf. Vlak voor de
voltrekking van het
vonnis zetten zij psalm43
in. Precies deze psalm
verwerkte Jan de Haan in
zijn openingswerk Geuzen
Medal Fanfare. Hij
schreef het ter
gelegenheid van de
vijfentwintigste
uitreiking.

The Geuzen
Medal is an annual award
given to people or
organizations who have
found unique ways to
further democracy in the
world and help eliminate
dictatorships, racism,
and discrimination. The
original Geuzen fought
against Spanish
imperialism in Holland
during the16th century.
During the Second World
War a group resisting the
Nazis also named
themselves De Geuzen. Jan
de Haan incorporates
Psalm 43, sung by a group
of condemned prisoners
shortly before their
execution in 1943, into
Geuzen Medal Fanfare,
composed for the 25th
bestowal of this special
award.
Ieder jaar
weer wordt ze weer
uitgereikt: de
Geuzenpenning. Dit is aan
een persoon of
organisatie die zich op
bijzondere wijze inzet
voor de democratie en
tegen dictatuur, racisme
en discriminatie. In de
zestiende eeuw streden
deGeuzen tegen de Spaanse
bezetting. In de Tweede
Wereldoorlog was er
eveneens een verzetsgroep
die zich zo noemde. Een
deel van hen werd in 1943
veroordeeld tot de
doodstraf. Vlak voor de
voltrekking van het
vonnis zetten zij psalm43
in. Precies deze psalm
verwerkte Jan de Haan in
zijn openingswerk Geuzen
Medal Fanfare. Hij
schreef het ter
gelegenheid van de
vijfentwintigste
uitreiking.

‘Panem et
Circenses’, Bread and
Games were essential for
keeping the citizens of
ancient Rome in check.
While the bread was
meant for the poorest
among the Romans, the
Games were Popular
Pastime Number One for
everybody. There were
different kinds of games,
such as chariot races
(especially popular with
female spectators), or
wild-beast fights, where
lions, tigers, bulls or
bears were set on one
another or even on human
beings. Most popular,
however, were the
Gladiator fights.
In ‘Bread and Games’
William Vean depicts one
of the many fights in the
antique Colosseum. 1.
Entrance of the
Gladiators: By powerful
bugle-calls the attention
of the peoplewas asked
for, after which the
Gladiators entered the
Arena at the sound of
heroic
marching-music. 2.Swor
dfight: We can hear that
the fights were not mere
child’s play in this
part.On the contrary,
they were a matter of
life and death and were
fought
accordingly. 3.Mercy
of the Emperor: Sometimes
a wounded gladiator could
be fortunate, depending
on the mercy of the
audience. Waving one’s
handkerchief meant mercy,
a turned-down thumb meant
no pardon. The Emperor
had the right to take the
final decision, but he
usually complied with the
wish of the majority of
the public. 4.Lap of
Honour: Gladiators were
mainly selected among
slaves, convicted
criminals, or prisoners
of war. Consequently,
winning was very
important, as it would
mean fame, honour and
sometimes even wealth. A
lap of honour, therefore,
was the winner’s due
reward.
‘Panem
et Circenses’, brood en
(circus)spelen,
essentieel in het
Romeinse leven om de
burgers in het gareel te
houden. Het brood was
vooral voor de
allerarmsten bedoeld,
maar de spelen, dat was
volksvermaak nummer
één. Erwaren
verschillende soorten
spelen, de Strijdwagen
racen, vooral in trek bij
de vrouwen, de
dierengevechten of
jachtpartijen, waar
leeuwen, tijgers, buffels
of beren tegen elkaar of
tegen mensen opgehitst
werden. Maar favoriet
warentoch wel de
gevechten der
Gladiatoren.
William Vean
beschrijft in ‘Bread
and Games’ één van de
vele gevechten in het
aloude Colosseum. 1.
Entrance of the
Gladiators: Met krachtige
(hoorn)signalen wordt de
aandachtvan het volk
gevraagd waarna de
Gladiatoren op
heldhaftige marsmuziek de
Arena binnentreden.
2. Swordfight: Dat de
gevechten geen kinderspel
waren horen we in dit
deel. Het gaat er hard
aan toe, en de gevechten
waren vaak op levenen
dood. 3. Mercy of the
Emperor: In enkele
gevallen had een gewonde
Gladiator geluk. Dit hing
af van de stemming van
het publiek. Wapperende
zakdoeken betekende
geluk, met de duim naar
beneden wijzen betekende
geen pardon.De Keizer had
het laatste woord maar
volgde meestal de
stemming van het publiek.
4. Lap of Honour:
Gladiatoren werden
meestal uit slaven,
veroordeelde misdadigers
of krijgsgevangen
geselecteerd. Winnen was
daarom erg belangrijk.Dit
betekende roem, eer en
soms zelfs rijkdom.
(vergelijkbaar met onze
sporthelden) Een ereronde
was dus wel op zijn
plaats.
